Just got an email from Funcom saying if I don't reactivate my AoC account, they'll delete all my characters below lvl 20. Woot, there goes my auction characters and all meh GOLD!
Well, it's not like I'm going to reactivate my account for that. The game is gone. I just think it's funny, the way they threaten you!

I got the e-mail (live in Holland),glanced at it and deleted it.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Huh I never got the email.
Mne eto nado kak zuby v zadnitse.
Well, if your account isn't active then your "auction" characters can't be doing anything and if all you have are characters under level 20 and an inactive account it doesn't sound like much damage.
It is a bit uncharacteristic for a game to delete toons but it is one way to free up names and resources especially if an account is inactive and not likely to ever go active again.
yeah this is because they are merging servers again soon
"As announced in the December Letter from the Game Director we will merge the Age of Conan servers soon. Today we wanted to announce some preparations for the server merge that will include the deletion of characters from levels 1 to 20 on accounts that were inactive (without subscriptions) for 7 months or more.
Qualifications for Character Deletion Process:
NO characters will be deleted from an account that has a valid, running subscription.
If an account's subscription ran out 7 or more months ago, and the account is not reactivated until the character deletion process starts, characters below level 21 will be deleted. Characters of level 21 and up remain untouched and are NOT deleted.
Owners of accounts that qualify for the character deletion process mentioned above, will receive an e-mail today to inform them about it. If you have an account that was not active for 7 months or more and therefore qualifies for deletion of characters level 1 to 20, you can re-activate your account now to ensure that your characters progress and names stay intact.
We will release more information on the server merges including a detailed FAQ on commonly asked questions during the process later this week."
Good to know if you care about your Tortage characters. I really don't see the problem oftherwise, if you don't plan on playing or you're waiting for a reason to, what does it matter if your lvl 10 warrior that you never played past the first day is gone? If it was under 80 I could see having concerns in this case not so much. Of course if you're that concerned you could always log on.

So if you have not subscribed last 7 months and wish to keep your under level 20 characters you must reactivate to not get those deleted.
If I rember correctly its standard in MMOs that the company can delete any non-active accounts after 3-6 monts.
There is no threat.
If you dont want to loose your gold you can re-activate FOR FREE, and clean up your auction house character etc and move the valuables to a charachter thats higher than lvl 20. So with very little effort you can preserve your valuable items and have the game on hold for later on.

I received the same email and it very much feels like a threat, I never seen this in any game and I have played many mmos including crappy F2P ones with bad companies managing them, even with server mergers other games just move your char and let you know, they don't delete it or better yet tell you to resub or it will be deleted..
it is quite sad, this is the last funcom game i will ever purchase, too bad I wasted $120 on that collectors edition, if I could only turn back time.
BTW there's no "free" activation to move items as you claim, the special offer reffered to there is to get a discount on a multi-month resub NOT free.
so it is resub and spend $$ or bye bye.

soo let me get this right, you paid 120 bucks for the collectors ed of AoC. played lv 1-20 on a toon or two... and now QQ because funcom is going to delete your toon if its under lv 21.... because you do not wish to enjoy the game you paid 120bucks for O-o'
maybe im not quite grasping it.. but it seems to be.. people are bitching about pebles... honestly anyone who only has <20 lv toon(s) clearly shouldnt give two shatz if they are deleted... so what is your chuck norris#1 is deleted... woopy from what i understand of AoC getting lv 20 is as easy as logging in and going to the bathroom...
SO if your inactive +7 month account with <20 lv toons is marked for deletion why are you complaining??? dont want to lose your toon dont leave it inactive for almost a year...
i honestly dont see any problem with the loss of a lv 20 or under toon as most mmos you can get lv 20 in 8hrs of actually playing, sure it sucks they are doing the deletion route but, if its tied in with server merging it just means less KBs to transfer over... AND honestly if your account is that inactive.... WHAT DO YOU CARE???
Actually it is quite free. I just resubbed on Friday and they gave me 7 days free play time before they charge my credit card.
haha i just paid a month ago to move my character off of wiccana to ironspine so as to enjoy less lag and make alts with more name choices. Looks like i'll end up back on wiccana. Just hope i don't lose the character names.
Wiccana is so old that there are a bajillion taken names on utterly dead accounts.
I am all for this deletion process!!
Ok a 7 month inactive level 20 char isnt worth a single tear - for names i understand that some people make toons only to reserve names - that is not the objective of the game isnt it?

had that been "all" characters then I would have felt forced/pushed into rejoining; in which case I would be driven further away
but level 20 doesn't affect me personally, only questioning what they think they're doing
Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.
I have difficulty believing Funcom will actually delete the characters in question, as deleting characters completely screws over your marketing department when they later encourage people to re-subscribe. It seems more likely this is just someone's misjudged "bright" idea. A strongarm bluff.
I'm beginning to think that saying no to bad ideas is just as important as saying yes to the good ones.

I hadn't played SWG from the day CU went live until sometime in 2008 when I gave NGE a shot just for the hell of it and even (LOL) SOE never deleted any of my characters. Total loser move on Funcom's part. That being said, they should wait until after the expansion launch to do this. Maybe some people that hadn't played since the disastrous launch would give the game another shot with the expansion, but may be less inclined to go back if some of their characters are deleted.
I'm glad Funcom is finally admitting that something needed to be done about the dead servers for the remaining players at least.
Yeah I thought the scare tactics to get people to come back was funny too. Looks like someone beat me to this thread by a bit though. I doubt this will get anyone who wasn't planning on returning to return at all though. They should probably keep focusing their time on making shill accounts and getting people to spam the MMORPG screenshot page with AoC adverts again.
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Then obviously you've never played Anarchy Online. They've done purges there before as well. Also quite obviously, you don't realize that Funcom has a written policy stating they will delete toons that are more than 3 months inactive. Wonder how much all the crybabies would whine if they actually started enforcing that policy rather than only doing it when neccessary?

its always better to work on needs of already paying than would be paying. i did have some storage alts but i had resubbed for 14 day free in november (i think), that protects them, right? didnt get the email also
I need more vespene gas.
Yes, if you used the 14 day comeback, you are protected since you "subbed" in the last 7 months.

Yes I did, but it appear that you never had. From what i read, server pop is extremely low, so i dont buy the fact there is a grave demand for char names not being used. Its just like one of the other posters said .. they are trying to squeeze every last penny they can get out of a dying player base before they release some other half game of promises.
Anyone who expects to sit on their <20 characters and not sub for seven months deserves deletion in my opinion. If I had my way i'd delete the complete accounts (all chars) as they are nothing but a waste of space, adding not one thing to the game in the way of community, or indeed injecting the cash the devs need to keep their product alive.
[Disclaimer : I play AoC mainly because I am a fan of RE Howard's Conan stories, and the excellent community that exists on the server Crom]
Hehe sorry but this put a smile on my face. Funcom is not enforcing that particular policy for 2 specific reasons:
1. Their database design would be the laughing stock of the industry if a measly 1mill. * 8 accounts resulted in performance/storage problems.
2. Deleting inactive (former) subscribers avatars will make Funcoms PR-dept.'s "winback" campaigns a hell of a lot harder.
I guess the "crybabies" you refer to are the PR-department then?
As for policies: Funcom (as well as any other MMO-publisher out there) have a lot of them. I guess there would be a lot of noise from other "crybabies" if they actually started to enforce some of their RP-ruleset/naming/cheating policies. (Actually I hope they will - The game would be a better place imo.)
Edit: Grammar/spelling as usual.
We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!!
