From what i've read here and on the STO forums D2D is the best way to do it if you don't mind not getting a hard copy of the game. Apparently you get the pre-order bonus + beta codes right away, and after you purchase you can download the client.

Personally I went through Amazon.com because I wanted the borg officer, however I haven't received my pre-order bonus as of yet.

    I'm hopeful it comes today.

I PO'd through D2D and got the key right away (week ago).

Friend of mine PO'd through amazon.com (about 4 days ago) and got his key (via email) yesterday.

I also have a PO through a local Gamestop and still havent recieved the key. I just called 5 minutes ago to see if they had it and got the "Later today or tomorrow" line before he just suddenly hung up on me.

The Gamestop PO was for the CE version (girlfriend got me a gift cert for them, so why not...) while the D2D was for the DDE version (which the retail key was going to go to a friend who loves Star Trek as a thank you for helping me patch the roof in the middle of a nasty downpour).

So I am good for the open beta as of right now, but if I dont get the key from Gamestop in time for the head start (knowing those morons they probably will just hand them out to anyone buying a used game...) I'll be pissed...

Eh... none of them are really the 'best' persay; more a matter of personal preference.

Which offer appeals more to you is what you should be asking yourself.

Well basically the PO bonus stuff is just fluff items that really wont have an impact on the actual game itself. Even if the item is something like combat armor or bonus skill points, they will eventually become moot as you progress.

In my opinion I think the Borg Officer (Amazon) and the old school Connie (Gamestop) are the 2 most appealing PO bonus items for Trekkies. Following that would be the D2D PO and Steam PO.

Just from what I played in the beta, I would do the Borg Bridge Officer or the TOS Enterprise. You will get more out of the Borg since you will use the BO through the whole game. As with the enterprise you can at least mix up the first 20 hours with a better starter ship then the one you get without the pre-order. Problem with that one is if you go wild with leveling you might not get much use out of the ship since they won't give you the code for it until the head start is over. Hope that helps a little bit.

It probably depends on two factors. Is there a specific bonus gift you want and do you want a hardcopy or not. I chose amazon.com as I wanted the borg bridge officer (beta codes came today). If you're not bothered about either go with D2D.

im just afraid of not getting it on steam.then finding out there will be steam achievements like CO.

  • ahrens99ahrens99 Member Posts: 30

I could see steam doing what they did with MW2 and delaying the release 2 extra days so they can apply the game to their service lol

Thanks for the quick replys guys, seems like D2D is the best option after reading your posts , I hope you all get sorted and have no problems getting into the game . :)

Right I'm off order from D2D right now !

    thanks again .

I preordered the Gamestop preorder collectors edition.  Still no beta key in the mail but I did get a target beta key for 1 dollar so I am good to go.

I just read the Constitution class ship has no bridge.  I haven't seen this confirmed yet by anyone official, this is just the talk on the STO forums.

I also pre-ordered (Collector's Edition) from Game Stop with the store pick up option. Since I had not yet received an e-mail today with a beta key or download instructions, I called the store I am supposed to pick up from. They said I should come in and pick up my beta key from them (along with download instructions) anytime today. They had my name on their list.

Imo you will grow out of both the borg officer and the enterprise very quickly, the 500 skill points is basically nothing, so I went with the joined trill its something you can not ever get in game, and it scales so you never outgrow it.

    Just my 2 cents

Well just again called the Gamestop my CE was purchased at and they told me that they havent recieved any keys yet. Then he said that the keys are via email only.

After that I called the other 6 Gamestops in the area and they all recieved thier keys on Friday. I asked if it would be possible to get the key from them seeing as I have the recipet that shows the purchase, but I couldnt because each store has a list and it would mess up thier system.

I am betting my store of purchase has a stack of them sitting in a drawer and the twits have no idea what they are for....

I went with Best Buy. I figured the Tribble's healing bonus would be nice to have at any stage of the game.

I've already recieved my Beta Key, just have no idea how downloading the client for beta is supposed to work.

Although I'm still on the fence as to pre-order or not (would really like to get into beta before making a decision) getting the joined trill seemed like the best to me, too.  Plus you get the automated ship defense, which sounds kinda useful... at least until you get the hang of combat.

I kinda looked at the borg, but it sounds like the joined trill is an available race versus just the borg bridge officer... albeit a very curvaceous female borg, which was a shame for those of us who prefer our cake to be beef.

The Borg Officer will grow with your character all the way to end game and supposed to have unique officer abilities only available to the borg. I forgot to look and see what the Trill had for traits but I'll double check tomorrow. To download the files for beta just go to startrekonline and put your key in then there will be a beta choice to get the downloader started and I would suggest starting it asap as it will be big and slow :) (Also fileplanet has the downloader)

I went D2D. Reputable, reliable, electronic download, simple, and I dont have to add to an already cluttered closet with another box.  Im not personally interested in the perks, since I'm more interested in the game-play, though I'm guarded about it.

Edit add:  heh...so i forgot to mention...i just went with the standard copy, nothing fancy.  What I've learned from the past is either, the perks, or another type like it might be available in-game at another point.  So I really dont care there.

I just went for the standard version, still pretty cool I think, plus you get a personal shield so not so bad for 10 pounds less !

Thought I'd give you guys a heads up on GAME in UK, me and my friend went in store in Nottingham yesterday and got told they can't provide keys yet due to the snow problem we've been having and don't know when they'll be recieving them so I persnoally wouldn't bother with them.
