    FUCK?

I started the torrent, went to sleep and after 6 hours I had craptastic 0.7%. Yeah ZERO POINT SEVEN. Then I tried the downloader, and after another 7 hours I had 3.8% booya.

But knowing Cryptic I actually didn't really expect them to manage it.

Just like as with FP. Only for PAID subscribers!

Actually you do not have to be a paid subscriber to get one of the codes from tenton.  Also, fileplanet will usually reserve the codes they get for paid subscribers then after a few days offer any left to non paid subscribers.  So it is alwasy a good idea to check file planet everyday.

They could barely handle the people from FP who were added at end of CB trying to get them all downloaded and into beta. Imagine that times 100.
Will be interested to see how they handle all the pre-orders dling and trying to get in tomorrow. Maybe i am wrong, we will see.

I am in open beta. The download was available starting saturday. Although D2D was the only place to get the correct file. Fileplanet and other had the wrong version.

As you can see by the majority of comments here, most disagree with you. I also am someone with "years" of MMO experience and know that Open Beta means quite literally no requirements (such as pre-order to qet "Open" beta key, go to Fileplanet, oops, keys only to those who subscribe( = pay)!!, etc.).
Here is a great phrase from the STO site:
"Can't find a key at a partner site? Still feeling lucky? Well, if you have a registered account with us, you may also receive one of the keys we'll be sending out at random to our userbase."
Hahaha. Got to love the wiley marketing folks at STO.
    Have a nice day.

They want to limit the number of people in the open beta but they also want to make sure they can stress the server enough to be a valid test

    10.1.12
STO year 2409, 30 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis... FAQ and forums

    STO OB (Open Beta) 10AM pacific, 12 - 26 Jan. 2010
The Tentonhammer downloader started at about 45KBps then quickly droped to 20. They mention their STO client version is 6.6GB

    The fileplanet (fp) "free-public" servers
(yes they are free to access if one has a FREE account ID to log-in with; there are higher speed "private" servers for those that purchase a subscription)
fp has a 2 hr and 3 hr que for west and east coast servers. Star_Trek_OB_ST_0_20100108a.zip 7.841GB, updated 1/11/2010, 89K d/l as of Tuesday Jan 12. fp seems to indicate one needs one of their beta keys to unlock their d/l.

The bigdownload.com site indicates their 2GB d/l is not working at the moment.
other beta key sites: Massively and Zam and keys randomly distributed to STO registered members.

    The minimum system requirements are:
    * OS: Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista / Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit)

teen rated, Windows 7/ Vista / XP

PS. the OB client will patch to the retail client Feb 2, 2010 automatically but one will need a retail product key to continue playing after Open Beta ends. us$47 Pre-order gets a 4 day headstart Jan 29 and access to a Borg bridge officer.

    edit
the fp wait time was a joke it was about a SEVEN hour wait but at least it is d/ling at about 700KBps... another 3 hrs to d/l the client.

Beta during the weekend was actually not too bad, other then the patches I had to download.  After patches were downloaded I was able to get in fine.

I think Cryptic should of had a limited key access beta, because 10's of thousands of keys is just a big ole pain of hurt just waiting to happen.

I remember when CO had issues during it's beta, I would of thought Cryptic would of looked at that more closely and learned from what happened .....  Well here's to hoping they get it fixed soon.

Server went up for me around 9ish, it's game time =)

    Wildstar (2013) & Elder Scroll Online (2013)

    Playing: Diablo 3, WOW, Far Cry 3 & X-Com.

Enjoyed: WOW 5 1/2 yrs, LOTRO 3yrs, GW 1/2yr, DFO 1yr, EVE Online 3yrs, and Huxley (Beta).

Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.

I spent all day in beta and this is what I saw.

    (1) Clunky control interaction for both ground and space

    (2) Space is worse  than pirates of the burning see except now you got up and down

    (3) lack of wayponts you get a mission that say got find this in this sector or go scan that. Do a scan in star trek your office would say go to cordiante bla bla bla and then you go.

    (4) Lag is worse than playing lotro in the moors with 6 raid groups running around.

I am glad I had an  free open beta test key as sto was just deinstalled from my computer. I am glad i did not buy this

hmmm I rather enjoyed myself, lag for me was not to bad, space controles are different and take time to get used to, Pirates was an awful game from a to z,, map and pull down guides like in eve tell you all you need to know about where to go.  All in all i like this game , much better then co and when they open up all the content should be quite good
