The most overhyped MMO of current times.

FFXIV? Guild Wars 2? The Old Republic?

Which game do you think isn't going to live up to the hype? All of them perhaps?

I honestly think it'll be The Old Republic if anything. I've said it once and I'll say it again. I am not a fan of monthly fee + cash shop. I'm really not a fan of it in an MMO with the kind of limited player interaction I've read about.

Well...... I'd not say SW: TOR is responsible for overhyping. I think its more of the huge buzz surrounding it. Bioware did to their credit try to keep it secret til some suit at EA blew the whistle.

But if you're asking which game can be the biggest fail then I feel compelled to pick SW: TOR / kotro only cause it looks like a straight up WoW-gone-star-wars. I might give swtor a try regardless tho due to a strange loyalty to KOTR universe :/

Personally, I think FFVI will be worth *something*. The predecessor had this kind of innate charm that drew me and many others away from the fact it was a crazy-hard grindfest. That was a hardcore game for sure. Guild Wars 2 will be about as poignant as it's prequel, making it the perfect backup game when between P2P games, I doubt it will be worth more than that to most. SWToR on the other hand I can't comment on, I know it will sellout like a new Krispy Kreme would anywhere in Texas, but whether people will like what they see and stick to it remains to be seen. Easily it will sell a million+ copies on SW and Bioware love to begin with, and from there, no telling how many will stick with it because it's an awesome game, or just because they have a need to give a perpetual handie under the table to Bioware. I don't have extremely high hopes for any of them, but expect only FFVI to deliver in the places it needs to in order to do well enough.

Lol, GTWander, I didn't clearly call out those MMOs. I just used 3 of the most well-known names in upcoming games. Opinions on others are welcome. ^^

Nothing else has the PR storm behind it to attract the number of consumers those 3 will. This was about hype right?

The difference between them and a game like Global Agenda is in the difference of about 800k people (obligatory figure).

I had non-gamers non-geeks non-trekkies talking to me about STO over the weekend.

So, I'd have to go with STO, because these are the kind of people who don't even know what a MMORPG is. "It's like WoW" lol

Not sure, I was hoping someone could tell me. xD But yeah, it's about hype. =]

And TheHatter, I was under the assumption it was mainly negative hype. There's been a lot of positive hype? Lol.

Overhyped is probably Star Trek online.     Not that I believe it was entirely Cryptic's fault ,  Star Trek is a huge IP especially for the (computer gamer) genre.     To me it seems they are sticking a sub-par MMO (nobody would care about this game if it had ANY other name)  in the guise of Star Trek and waiting for it to sell.  ( It will )    How long the trekkies stick around will be another thing.

STO because so many non gamers are going on about it.

Star wars because of the history of the IP and the fact that EA will no doubt hype the crap out of it.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

STO is a strong candidate which we'll hear more about soon... SW:TOR is another strong candidate for the future.

You can't make mediocre games for huge IPs, unless you are just expecting box sales and not a long-term AAA MMO, because using a huge IP is surely bringing you lots of box sales out of an overwhelming hype.

I would have to agree with the others, STO & SWTOR are quite hyped and have a big following but alot of those people havent played MMO's in their life so it might be disappointing to them but i still believe both games are gonna be awesome.

  • kaladikaladi Member Posts: 19

If they don't fuck up their genius combat system, GW2 will "win"

SW:OR will be a success too.

Star Trek will have it hard and Final Fantasy will "loose" but will have enough players to survive.

    I think it is STO.

Bioware might fail but I still think they will add something to the genre, they are trying something new and some good things usually comes from that even if the game itself will suck (Which I am far from sure of).

Guildwars 2 will sell a lot, and so will FFXIV.

STO will not add to anything and people will forget it faster than WAR. Cryptic never been that good, they might get a hit with their upcommi9ng Forgotten realms MMO but that is just because that is something you can't fail with. Star trek is the opposite, it is probably the hardest IP you can find.

    STO without a doubt.

And they have been clever with the way they have run it too - limiting Beta time stops people getting bored and maintains the Hype.

They are living off IP that they may not even have been faithful to?

    Awesome.

STO hands down. I have no faith in Cryptic on this. It will be a dumbed down instanced piece of nothing.

  • TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

SW:ToR is hyped as was Aion and many others...all get hyped to some extent.   The past year was definitely Aion .  When it gets close to being released SW:ToR will definitely get hyped to the point of stupidty.

I'm going to also have to go with STO, however much hype there is left on it.  After what happened to Champions, it greatly reduced my confidence that they could pull off STO with anything worthy of holding my attention.  The only good part about it is, right now, my expectations are so low.. I guess they can only go up.

I'm in the same boat pal lol. I don't think STO is nearly as hyped as people make it out to seem. Not in any section of current mmo gamers anyway. This is, of course, even despite all of Cryptic's efforts. I think it's mainly because of how bad CO turned out coupled with how terrible a past this game has had already.

I'm not expecting much. I'm just glad I got a key for the beta without having to pay for it.

    STO
Cryptic bit off more than they can chew imho and are counting on initial box sales to make a winning on this one. Don't see it doing any better than say CO - which is not what this IP deserves.

Star Trek Online?  Seriously?  Even without promising any type of nudity (blue skinned hotties or marina sirtis or even jerry ryan, etc.,..), people will flock to this game because of the name/IP alone.  (even though they will probably be disappointed... due to lack of said nudity and/or gameplay).  But  I don't know that the game has really been 'hyped' though.  Certainly not as much as the next Final Fantasy or Star Wars:ToR has been.

No 2 games have ever been hyped as much as WAR or AoC.  Seriously, those games win the all time hypemeter award.

Again, I would say FF or ToR for hype-beasts long before I would offer Star Trek the crown.

STO will definitely not live up to the hype. I mean, they did a fantastic job with Champions, how could STO fail ?

Although a hard choice between STO and SW:TOR I'm going to go towards Star Wars for this award.

If the lack of QA on Dragon Age is any indicator, people with black screens of death and spiking processor usage, the acquisition by EA seems to be fulfilling the self-destruction that players like me said would come about.

We said it would hurt them right on their very own boards. They didn't listen.

Yep Stanley Woo go ahead and spend more time posting than doing your QA job on Dragon Age.

    (Had to vent)

Furthermore they said in a 2009 issue of PC Gamer they would address min-maxers.

I have yet to see a war initiated against this true enemy and last catered group of the MMORPG genre.

Definitely have to give the title of upcoming overhyped MMO to SW:ToR.  I'm basing my reason on what I've seen so far.

The game looks, speaking visually here, looks terrible.  Not much better then WoW from the vids and shots I've seen.  Very bland.  And because of the people hailing it as the next WoW...they're annoying to deal with already, imagine how bad they'll become and how they'll multiply once it gets near beta/release..../shudder.

For current or soon to be released MMO...  STO.  Cryptic.  Enough.  Said.

Last years was definitely Aion.  It's not a bad game, but it failed in bringing anything new or different from other MMOs.  And they have yet to resolve the botting issue, which is a definite minus in my book.  If there's one thing I loathe in MMOs, it's the botters.
