Star Trek Online: Will You Like It? Depends on Your Trek

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

In honor of the Star Trek Online NDA drop, MMORPG.com's Jon Wood put together this overview of how the fans of the different trek series might feel about Star Trek Online.

Today, Cryptic's Star Ttrek Online entered Open Beta, and along with the start of this final phase before launch comes the drop of the game's NDA. Over the next few days, I'm sure that interested parties will be inundated with reports, both good and bad. You will have read players proclaiming it the greatest thing since the interwebz were invented and you will have read players proclaiming it a sign that the antichrist is among us. That's the nature of most MMOs. They don't have a universal appeal, as much as their developers might like for them to. Some groups of people are going to love it, some groups of people are going to hate it, and most people will fall somewhere in between.

In honor of the STO NDA drop, I thought I'd take a look at the different fan groups within the Star Trek franchise and break down how likely each kind of fan is to enjoy the game:

Read Will You Like It? Depends on Your Trek.

Cheers,
Jon Wood

It's got to be a good MMO first.  Being a fan of the series / world will only take you so far - if the game is junk then it doesn't really matter.

Which series of Trek had no individual crew members using their skills and personal initiative to solve problems? None that I saw.

I don't think I've ever been more pessimistic when entering the open beta phase of a MMO that has this much "potential." The IP alone should draw a crowd. It's sad to see so many MMO's with unrealized potential. Time will tell.

    so...

a crappy game is a crappy game no matter what title it has

have to add from what i've read so far it doesn't sound like a good mmo or even an mmo

Huh, thanks for that breakdown.  It's at least interesting to see how you would relate the fandom between shows and game.  I guess I'd fall into mainly the TNG part.  I never missed an episode and watched reruns as long as they were on (the term "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra" still pops in my head every couple months).  I didn't like DS9 at all... or should say, I never gave it much of a chance and only watched parts of a few episodes.  Voyager I gave a little bit more attention than that, but not much.  I watched all of Enterprise but I admit it was mostly because I was a fan of Scott Bakula for Quantum Leap and Jolene Blalock for... umm, for... yeah.  I believe I've seen every episode of the original more than once, but it's still more to laugh at than anything.

You should make a version of this based on the types of MMO players.

Because after all, we're at MMORPG.com :P And Trekies, whatever fan they are, have their MMO tastes which I believe will override any show preferences as it will eventually go down into the qualities of the game as a MMO.

Right cause just because your bridge officers arent player controled their irelevent. Even though they level up, have ai, skills, and equipment...just like you....

or are you upset that you can't pick and choose from any crew member.

Tell me who was the 3rd ensign on the night shift of Voyager in the engine room durring the Borg assault that lead to recruiting 7 of 9 tiriary adjunct of Unimatirx 0-1?

MMO_Doubter, do you ever have anything positive to say? They could come up with a game that literallly cured brain cancer and you'd bash it. In your 2600 posts have you ever once not been negative?

BTW, get off these forums and go outside. You've posted 2600 times in 5 months. That's almost 18 posts a day. Some people are addicted to weed, others coke, others food. Why is your addiction an mmo forum?

    Damn kid, you're annoying.

I'm a hard core Deep Space Nine fan (we call ourselves "Niners," the series writers even named the Deep Space 9 baseball team after us,) and I don't think I'll like this game much because of misconceptions like "The combat is highly reminiscent of what you saw in the later seasons of that show. The Federation is once again at war, and most of the game revolves around that (as did the series)." Saying such a silly thing makes it look like the author didn't even watch 83% of the series at all.

Liked "Way of the Warrior" and "Sacrifice of Angles" eh, Jon? So did I, but did you happen to catch "Duet," "In the Pale Moonlight," "Far Beyond the Stars," or "Trials and Tribble-ations?" These were as much the core of the series as the far fewer battle oriented episodes and they can even rank themselves as some of the very best of Trek, yet not a single battle takes place in any of them.

Cryptic seems to be aiming for the hard-core shoot-em-up fans with this game with non-stop combat, combat, combat. But that isn't at all what Star Trek is about, even the war based seasons of DS9.

I feel sorry for Star Trek, they chose the wrong company to produce their IP MMO

This is going to be an Epic Fail !!

I was in closed beta, (yes I bought the lifetime sub for their previous crap games) and I can't even stand for 10 min!

Is just the same old thing and mechanism as Champ Online !!!

Sigh ... I love Star Trek (especially after their JJ Abram movie that introduce me to explore more), is hurt to see them choosing fault company !! T_T

TNG boared me for the first 2 seasons.  It got so much better after that.  I have always been a big fan of Star Trek I can remember being 5 on saturday night we would all be in front of the black and white tv that we had watching it.

The sad part of star trek yes was enterprise,  this and the abrams reboot both of those well are pure bantha poodo.

I actually was able to procure a key from ten ton this morning and have the open client downloang.  So I will get a chance to see if this is something I will like or not.

My tases in games range so it is hard when folks say that this game works for this or that,  who knows how well its going to play until you get a shot at it.

After reading this, I feel bad that I bought the Steam version early... Luckily I'm a casual fan as I liked all of Gene Roddenberry's creations, even Earth Final Conflict and Andromeda... also liked DS9 so I'm hoping this mmo doesn't dissappoint me too much.  So there's linear progression... yeah I can see that being a drawback... just hope it's not too much of a detractor.

I don't fit the mold I guess, maybe a genral overall Trek fan ? I have watched all of them and liked all of them, good scifi, I liked the captains, the cast and the stories and know triva beyond  ythat of the casual watcher ..  I have enjoyed STO so far, was in closed beta for along time, the game is fun for me, hope it gets a little more depth in the future, but I know from other cryptic games they are not into deep store telling..

Damn, I loved that episode. That and 'Inner Light' got me back into watching TNG after quitting midway through season 3. TNG is a great example of  a show that started badly and ended great.

    Yup. Even about this game.

I posted that I liked the addition of a bridge view. I like the way you can call in quest completion, rather than travelling back to base. I like the high degree of customization of ship and crew abilities. I like the episodic content of the PvE.

The difference is that when I say I like something about the game, I don't have 1/2 a dozen other posters attacking me for my opinions.

I enjoy discussing games and game design in general, and I'm not shy about sharing my opinions. No one said you have to read my posts, and I am unaware of a posting limit.

I have to echo some others here.  I'm a pretty hardcore fan of the series, but not to the point where I'd argue Trek trivia with anyone - I watched and enjoyed the original series, TNG, DS9, and Voyager.  They all had their unique charm.

That having been said, me enjoying the IP will only take this game so far.  Because I enjoy the IP I'll purchase the game and play it for a month or two in order to see if it's a good game; but after that, they have to "wow" me with game play.  If I'm not having fun every time I log on, it doesn't matter how much I might have enjoyed Picard's musings on the Borg or Janeway's devil-may-care attitude towards temporal travel - I won't play the game if it sucks.

I'd rather them get a hundred "details" wrong and make a fun game; as opposed to them trying hard to make everything "look and feel Trek" - getting that right, and then implementing, say, really lame combat or lack of an end game experience that has killed so many other games.  That would be unpleasant.

The game, like all mmo's is a an exercise in server farming. You do some stuff to collect some crap the devs have created, then rinse and repeat. The mmo'ness of it isn't important.

The only thing which matters is whether or not it is fun to play. And, if you enjoy space combat, it really is very good fun. More POTBS than Jumpgate or EVE, but really enjoyable.

If you wanted to spend your life doing diplomacy then it isn't the game for you, go play Vanguard instead.

  • Death1942Death1942 Member UncommonPosts: 2,587

The only thing that was really "wow" was the space combat.  Aside from that it was awefully generic as far as MMO's go and there was hardly any non combat stuff to do.  That being said my Trekkie friend seemed to enjoy flying around in the trek ships and visiting worlds he recognised from the TV series.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Good to know I'm not the only one.

Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.

I think this article is confusing casual trek fan and casual MMORPG gamer. I am the former but not the latter and will most likely not like the game since Cryptic are notorious for creating casual/easy MMORPGs.

And regardless of what kind of Star Trek fan I think most can agree that Star Trek has incredible depth and complexity (heck the IP even created a new language, Klingon) and Cryptic games are anything but having depth and complexity. So if you liked Star Trek and preciated the complexity of the IP, chances are you wont like this game.

    Had to quote it.

I think that is a good Quote of the Day.
