The time has come for us to move to a new MMO. I'd love to hear what you all think is a good game for us, based on these notes:
My Likes
- Detailed crafting
- Friendly community
- Decent graphics
- Persistent world (non-instanced, or low-instanced)
- Skill-based
- Lots of avatar customization options
- Not gear-heavy
- Player housing
- PvE
- Moderate PvP
- Fantasy setting
- Sandboxes
Her Likes
- Friendly community
- Game mechanics to support and enhance guilds
- High fantasy setting
- Fun crafting
- Achievements, ala the WoW system
- Lots of avatar customization options
- Strong player housing
- Frequent content updates
- Strong PvE
Can you recommend something, based on these? We really want to game together.

Minus the achievements, I'd take a serious look into Saga of Ryzom. =]

If it weren't for the friendly community, and focus of PvE, I'd say Darkfall.
Also, out of curiosity, what game are you currently playing?
Ryzom is a game I've played (and enjoyed) before, but I haven't the faintest idea how it's doing these days. Also, my wife has a strong like for high/traditional/Tolkienesque fantasy, so the sci-fantasy nature of Ryzom might put her off.
Right now neither of us is playing any MMORPGs, unless you count my occasional foray into the Mortal Online beta, but that game isn't something my wife would ever play. We want something we can enjoy together.

I never played Ryzom, but by all accounts it may be right for ya. Otherwise I'd suggest Wurm Online, but that's a game where building a project of epic scale can put a strain on relationships (if one of you is a perfectionist). Think I might give Ryzom a look-see sooner or later as well.

The best game I can think of is Lords of the Ring Online
Everquest 2 is 2ed choice
As far as i knew there wasnt player housing in Ryzom....did they add to the game ? and customization hmm...i was never able to create a decent looking female avatar lol, there are some options but very limited to the chosen race..but perhaps it was only me
Have you tried Fallen Earth at all? Its got most of those features although it isnt fantasy. If you want fantasy Id say also try LOTRO if you havnt already, although lately it has been moving more towards gear based.
My Guild Wars 2 Vids
-LOTRO have almost everything you both want, try it its a nice game
I'm guessing "fit the stick in the magical happy hole" is out of the question then.
Maybe Age of Conan would be up your alley though, if you're burnt out on WoW.
-I'd say that players were moving towards gear grinding and not the game itself, maybe more people from wow joined LOTRO lol :P

Why do I have this odd feeling he's going to respond any time now saying they've tried LotRO? Maybe I'm wrong...just a feeling with his wife loving high-fantasy.

LOTRO fans definitely. Has everything they asked for except the pvp (pvm) is rather pointless. But I'd sure tell them lotro before age of conan..I mean seriously? His wife wanted High fantasy - not an mmorpg where people were high when they made the game ;p

In point of fact we HAVE tried LotRO, though only briefly before diving back into our then-current game of choice, WoW. In my experience, though, MMOs tend to change dramatically in the space of a year, so our experience back then is probably completely irrelevant. I remember enjoying the create-your-own-music feature immensely, heh.

I want to know more about this game that the developers were high when they made it. Sounds fun as hell

i second eq2 i think you would enjoy it plus for the community they have sony punmps out content by the gallon
I DL'ed a week-long free trial a year ago just to get to lvl 5 and jam on the lute once again. It's the only thing that kept me paying for the sub when I did play, but didn't last that long. I tore that shit up though.

Based on what you and your wife likings, my suggestions are:
1.) Fallen Earth - The Best Crafting (lots of collecting and gathering and you never feel bored), Great Customization (However is modern world settings), Potential Great Housing system (they are making Housing now), and Great Community
2.) Lord of the Ring Online - Fantasy Settings, Fun Craftings, Lots of End game Contents (still not done, we still haven't go to Modor yet =p), Great Quests Written (I will say you both will be very enjoy the game if playing together)
Withe the recent expansion and many improvements made last year i would say check lotro again, if you don't get the vibe i would go with fallen earth. Ryzom population is still on the low side but people are more than happy to help you with hard missions plus if your wife will be with you all the time, that game can be pretty darn fun.
Sounds like you'll be heading back to WoW.
Roll on either Moon Guard or Wyrmrest Accord.

So it sounds like LOTRO, Fallen Earth, and Ryzom are the top three contenders?
I should mention that while we will be going back to WoW eventually, it won't be until Cataclysm is released, and probably even then only for a few months until we exhaust that content.

Sounds like a plan!
Anyways, out of those three - I vote for LotRO.
Well I would suggest LOTRO. Seriously, it is one of the best MMOs out there atm, and fulfills most of your items.
Lots of regular updates, look quite cool and very friendly ppl. And you play something relatively new, so it has potential for the future, unlike IMVPO stuff like Ryzom. Fallen Earth is quite unique and it isnt Fantasy; Ryzom is nice, but a sort of old timer MMO, not really up to date in most aspects.
Really, do yourself a favour and try Lord of the Rings Online out. ^^

LOTRO is the most complete game of the 3.
So it looks like we should try LOTRO again.
Before we dive in, though... where's the best place to learn about the game that ISN'T the actual website?

I'm just gonna throw this out there cause it meets some of your criteria...
Have you tried Wizard101?
It has quite the Housing and Crafting Systems.
