Fallen Earth is pretty much like a wild west mmorpg in the beginning.
You got guys in trenchcoats and cowboy hats, wilding rifles or pistols, riding on horses through the plains. You just got to ignore the stuff about cloning, computers, the remains of planes and satellites and that stuff.
My thoughts on a Wild West MMO (in general). 1. Good RP setting; everyone loves cowboy hats and calling people "varmint".
2. Poor avatar variety. You'd obviously have to be human.
3. Limited combat variety. No magic or technology.
4. Potential racial insensitivity issues. Stupid, I know .. but it's a stupid world.
5. Wouldn't support trinity mechanics. Good or bad, depending on your view. I personally think that the setting is too limited to provide a rich and varied themepark MMORPG experience. A sandbox/virtual world model would have a better chance if the developer concentrated on resource acquisition and territorial claim as the primary "guild vs guild" metagame. Similar to EVE.
I don't think the western setting is limiting at all. Sure, you can't copy and paste ideas from fantasy games but who cares. The fantasy setting is getting played out anyway.
As long as there are enough character customization options, different clothes and other misc items #2 isn't a problem.
In the old west you have a variety of pistols, rifles, shotguns, knives, clubs, dynamite or even hand to hand combat to choose from. The solution to every problem shouldn't always be to outright kill your opponent then #3 is not a problem either.
#4... well as you said people can be stupid, there isn't much we can about that.
As for the holy trinity, I wouldn't miss it for a second.
The old west theme can make a great sandbox. The main source of conflict will come from resource and trade wars. Things like owning the land that has the gold or silver mine. Protecting a farmers cattle and horses from thieves. Bandits would rob stage coaches and trains which would be very similar to piracy in EvE. Guns and liquor were a big commodity to fight over. Then we have gambling which would become a whole subculture. It would be great if they could work in a hanging every once and a while.
All in all I think the setting has a lot of potential as long as they don't try to oversimplify the mechanics and turn it into a never ending gun fight.

I will play it but only the U.S government would be able to fund an mmorpg of this magnitude in my opinion. It's going to be a lengthy and very expensive project.
Even if we overlook the fact that there should be trains moving, poker, indians, fist fighting, law men and everything else required to give the appropriate immersion, just a "simple" cowboy riding a horse using his lasso would make many devs minds hurt for several months.
Also as a historical mmorpg it should be handled by experts who know and respect the history of U.S.A and give me the opportunity to learn its history by playing it.

I don't think it has to be historicaly perfect. Some sensationalism would be refreshing if done properly, just none of that fantasy is needed, reality would offer us plenty.
I think a little sensationalism and maybe even a little time twisting (blending era's a little) would be fine and would make an amazing game. Don't need dragons to have fun!
I can't believe someone beat me in point out the very BEST pnp game set in the old west BOOT HILL!! I gm'ed and played that game a ton and still have the box, the manuals and everything.. loved every minute of it and would love someone to create an MMO based on that era... are you listening BETHESDA?? ;-)
Either a sandbox where a "guild" could build a frontier town, mine for gold and so on (robbing another towns bank would make for some fun action) or a themepark could be fun.
A mix would probably be the best, with some player made towns and some npc towns.
Federal marshals and sheriffs played by players to uphold the law with help from bounty hunters against outlaws Lol, hangings of player that got caught... Robbing trains.
I would be a bit careful with portraying native Americans however, they have gotten a lot of crap from westerns during the years.
Also as a historical mmorpg it should be handled by experts who know and respect the history of U.S.A and give me the opportunity to learn its history by playing it.

I agree you wouldn't need to be historically perfect or the game world would be too rigid. But you can include major historical events as a background, for example the civil war would be an interesting background. Or if you want the time period a little earlier you can use the California gold rush.
I would like to see the technology kept accurate too. It would be silly to see somebody with a cell phone or laptop in that setting. And please, please, no magic or super natural crap under any circumstances.
History has events that even fiction writers couldn't make up.

As historical correct as possible would be best for me, some things could be slightly mixed from different years but nothing too much. I would prefer the California gold-rush myself.
And yes, no magic, no high tech, no Whoppie Goldberg and no wild wild west.

While I think a "historically accurate" mmo would be really cool I think there is some room for some "magic". You have to remember many people of that era believed in magic, particularly the Natives. They could be your "magic" users... This would fit with the time because the Whites thought of them as mysterious and dangerous. It would respectfully integrate them as a player class and make them cool to play, not to mention you could learn something about the culture that was destroyed by the "wild west".

They wouldn't work very well as a magic class, at least not in the standard sense. Injun magic was normally long to do, required personal sacrifice (Fasting, scaring, dancing, etc.) and after all that work, resulted in some sort of personal or group buff.

True, but this is a game and certain... liberties will be taken with it, for example, you don't die when you get shot once
And while there could be some of that, there could also be natural lore, communion with the animals (druid type meta class) etc.
For cripes sake, please someone develop this. American Indians for druid types or healers. Gunfights, gambling, brothels, and exploration. Nothing would be explored.......,maybe even a tid bit of a sim game with land plotting and development. Could I even get a pocketwatch +8 WISDOM???? lol........
Widl West Online (which you can find here on MMORPG.com) is the combat (test) portion of a MMO being developed. It's a F2P fun little gunfighter game where you can duel either NPC's or other players.
Alternate History - The CSA had their independence recognized and survived the Civil War. The year is 1880.The location are the states of New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado.
There are 4 ethnicities.
*Anglo-Saxon, Mexican, Native American, Chinese, African-American (Can only join Outlaws, USA)
There are 4 factions
*Confederate States of America, Union States of America, Outlaws, Federation of the Plains (Native Americans)
You can chose to join a faction, or stay neutral. The CSA controls the states New Mexico, Arizona, and Southern California. The USA controls Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and Northern California. The further north or the further south you travel in these territories are forts that cannot be captured, however near the border of these two factions are many Forts and Towns that can be controlled by player guilds. Guilds in the CSA and USA are equivelant to, say, divisions, while rogue clans make up The Native American and Outlaw factions. This will encompass both PvP and PvE. Certain towns/forts can be invaded by NPCs that players will have to defend against. If not that town will be lost to the invading NPC faction. PvP towns will have to be fortified by player divisions/clans and fellow faction members, or it will be lost to the opposing faction. Once a town has been captured, the leader of the clan that has captured the city can chose to raise it or build off of it. He can chose to build a saloon, stables, or hotels. Factions gain benefits based on how many bordertowns they control.
Gameplay besides fort/town capturing will be an expansive crafting/gathering system. Players can chose to be a leathermaker and make clothes, or possibly a cattleherder to feed troops (Hunger and hydration system will be included). Hunters can go hunt buffalo or coyote and sell their furs to merchants which will sell their wares to crafters. Entertainers will be required in towns to ease the minds of those who spend to much time working (an exhaustion system similar to SWG).
A bulletin board mission system will include both player and random-generated missions. Players can post a bulletin asking for hunters to gather furs for their craft, or harvest meat for cooking. Random-generated missions can consist of flushing out NPC faction members from their lands, hijacking a train (if you are an outlaw), escorting supply convoys, or leading an expedition into enemy territory.
The more protected areas of the west will be strictly PvE, while the borderlands will be faction PvP. Only the Outlaws and Native Americans can travel through both the CSA and USA. Combat will be similar to Fallen Earth, but will include a cover system. Classes are broken into trees similar to SWG. Players will have the option of branching out into Revolvers while still being able to maintain crafting skills, or they can go straight crafter or straight combat.
The land should be massive enough to support player housing. Players can choose to live in apartments in town, or can build communities out in the wilderness where they can farm, herd, hunt, or fish (just be weary of the natives and bandits). However, houses don't last forever, and will require lots of upkeep to stand the tests of the west. There is also the threat of bandits burning your house down as long as you are logged in, so it's best to stay away from hostile areas, or better to stay in a community.
I am sure I could go on and on with ideas...feel free to add.
Just throwing this out there. Can you one shot people? In the real west a twelve year old with a shotgun could kill the most capable of gun fighters. I would like a game with this amount of realism.
Yea, but then they should have zones of the body hit... so, you don't die if you get shot in the arm but, depending on the hit, you might not be able to use that arm, or you will bleed to death if you leave it untreated.
Most don't want that level of realism in their games because they join games to escape reality, not to live in a second reality where they are just as normal as they are in reality

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
Yup.
There are even several modules to draw from. (Google search them if you want to see em')
- Ballots and Bullets
- Mad Mesa
- The Lost Conquistador Mine
- Range War
It's all there, all someone has to do is strike a deal with Wizards Of The Coast to make a kick ass MMO out of all of it.
Second Life has a western MMO called Tombstone. Completely free to play. I think they require that your toon is > 2 weeks old though.
They'll give you a western outfit, gun, etc.
Well shave my back and call me an elf! -- Oghren
Just want to chime in my hearty vote for a sandbox Western Frontier MMO.
Been wanting one for a good long time.
The genre pretty much designs the game itself. It has all the trappings of the typical MMO built right in.
I don't think the western setting is limiting at all. Sure, you can't copy and paste ideas from fantasy games but who cares. The fantasy setting is getting played out anyway.

However for PC Towns I would avoid the Darkfall method completely. I find it's pre-positioned towns stupid.
