The most loyal customers - that plan to stay with the game for years.
Offering lifetime model, is not allowing the most loyal playerbase to actually pay for the game in the long-run. What's gonna happen with the game in 3-4 years, when majority of the STo playerbase will be loyal veterans, from which majority are already lifetimers? The possible answers are: paid expansions with no free updates OR microtransactions OR shutdown (Hellgate London).
Actually ... LOTRO sold lifetime subs for 219 euro's or something .. . so 250 bucks aint that bad. That said, for me its to much money, but i defenately thought the 1 year sub was a good deal. So i ordered that one
What are the EU costs for this please, in £ or Euros?

So you actually will play it through the summer lul too? No matter what...
I just made a calculation:
If you play it for 4 to 5 months after launch and then come back in the same playing sessions throughout the winter months,... you could play it until 2012/2013 with actually paying less than the so called "life time subscriptions".
By 2013 there is a BIG chance STO will be beaten by other blockbusters (even in space).
Never subscribe to an mmorpg for longer than 3 months. Even for WOW I never had a subs period longer than 3 months.
But it is your money of course.
Ofcourse it is everyone's choice ... myself i play the whole year around .. winter and summer.
Personally i think a lifetime is to much of a risk, saying i dont know if i will still play it 2 years from now. But i have played wow for ever 4 years and LOTRO over 2.
The 1 year sub for 83 euro's is not a bad deal at all , a montly sub is 13 euro's a month. So after 6 months of play, the rest of the year is free. For me this was the savest deal since i do know i like the game so much i will play it for a while.
I can not understand the black lash against this offer. We are consumers and Cryptic are offering us a CHOICE. This is the basis of the free market states that we all leave in. No one forces us do anything.....
It is up to you to take it or leave it. Ofc no one knows what will happen in the future but at the end of the day it is a choice. Your choice.
I commend Cryptic for offering this choice to its consumers!
Seriously, folks, this offer is the biggest clue you're ever going to receive on how much the game is going to suck. By paying monthly for a decent game you are enjoying, you're giving real-time feedback on how the game is making you feel. Hate it? Quit it! Never EVER buy a lifetime sub to an online game, it's just telling the company that they can sit back for a few months until they start feeling poor and then come up with something exciting that will cost extra money OUTSIDE your annual fee. I'm disappointed so far at how they took everything I didn't like in CO and are making it even worse in STO.
Definitely would get the lifetime. First of all, I am a Trekie and feel they did the series justice. Secondly, I only found two things that disappointed me in the beta so far. First of all, I think they should allow you to take incoming messages on a viewscreen, which would make it true to the Star Trek universe. Secondly, I wish they would have allowed you to play as a Romulan(not the bs Abrams version(which isn't a real Romulan, since Romulans have hair(look at Star Trek: Nemesis and you will see what I mean). Other than that I have found no reason to not get the lifetime subscription. I feel that when there is an open beta you should see that you are going to like it or not, and I most certainly will.
This reminds me how people's tolerance is being increased step by step in real life.
First we had television for free (Netherlands). Then we had to pay once a year. Then, they introduced commercials on top of that. And today, any movie you watch on television is interrupted at least 6 times for that. The sad thing is that my kids don't know any better. They ask me why i am whining about it.
Back to our litle MMo hobby. ~10 years of MMO development and one marketing/commercial gimmick after another gets introduced. And have the games gotten any better? I dare say no, they have become worse. But a lot of todays gamers don't know any better than this. They ask me what i am whining about.
Give us back our game. Go to hell with your $-attitude.

Amen to this.
It's the players' fault, though. For accepting (and even DEFENDING) such shenanigans. The MMO makers can't force us to buy their games.

But i guess we have to remember its mmorpg.com , negatively spreads around on these boards. Alot of trolls complaining about this and that even about games they never played. Except maybe about a fallen-earth review ... there they refuse to accept the truth.
I can't believe that anyone falls for these scams nowadays. It's just the usual cynical attempt to get money up front for a game that even trekkie fanboys won't be playing beyond a couple of months.
Paying monthly is your veto for a rubbish product - don't throw it away.

I know we are both on the same page. My problem is that another good IP MMO is commercialized to oblivion, making it impossible for me to play it (out of principal, not because i cannot afford it).
Soon every new MMO will be like this. And people will accept it like they accept clean water and electricity, as something competely normal.
I returned to single player games for now. And skype for my portion of chatting. Sigh.

It's silly to think this won't be microtransaction based as well as monthly. Which is a huge kick between the legs. Two character slots, no respecs. Unless paid for....<.<.

I've been playing MMOs since they started and I hate to brake it to you, but just because we had it cheap before, doesn't mean we should have it cheap now.
Offering lifetime subscriptions is a way to give a reward to people who are willing to commit to a game early. Some people know they like a game this much, shouldn't they be allowed to buy in if they want to? People are allowed to make their own decisions, calling them names and saying the company is just trying to steal their money is juvenile and seems bitter.

I've been playing MMOs since they started and I hate to brake it to you, but just because we had it cheap before, doesn't mean we should have it cheap now. Where is your breaking point? What wouldn't you personally pay for? Offering lifetime subscriptions is a way to give a reward to people who are willing to commit to a game early. No, it's not a reward. No more than an extended warranty for an appliance is a reward. It is a business strategy.
It is a gamble that you will quit playing the game before you have spent more on monthly sub fees than the cost of the lifetime sub. How many players do you think will play this game for a year and a half? Cryptic believes less than half will, or this wouldn't be offered.

The point of lifetime subscriptions is for people who enjoy it enough. No. It is to make more money. Period. I just wish it was through the end of February so I could get one.
Do you plan on playing the game more than a year and a half?

What will Cryptic benefit if i get a life time sub and quit before a year and a half?
It is not as if they will then decrease the resources they put intothe game will they? Or decrease server capacity will they?
Stop being cynical about this offer, it is a choice and it is a reward, from the consumers point of view, to bulk buying.
I bet you buy in bulk with other goods so why not MMO subs, do you go to the supermarket and buy individual cans of beer instead of a pack of beer that is cheaper ? No?Do you buy a daily ticket for travel to work, or buy on a monthly basis at a cheaper rate? No? Then why so cynical when it is offerred here?
If it benefits ths the consumer than it can be seen as a reward by the consumer, even if it is a business strategy from Cryptic's point of view.
Read my previous post. I enjoy the game and am a Trekie. Do I need any other reason to play a game that long? Also, if they wanted to make more money they wouldn't offer it. They would make more by not offering it($30 more per person) for each person serious enough to buy a lifetime subscription. The break even point for a subscriber is 13 months and someone who enjoys it enough would be playing it that long or longer. While you may be critical of it, I am sure you would jump on something like that for a MMO you find enjoyable. The only problem I personally have with Cryptic's lifetime subscriptions is they are too limited on time you have to get one. This is the third Cryptic game I have played(the others being City of Heroes and Champions Online) and with me they are three for three. Granted they need to tweak the game some but I definitely think Star Trek Online is a worthwhile game and worthy of the Star Trek name.
I think its a good deal and ive decided to get it i did with LOTR and its paid off, The Brog chacter you get is also nice, but im sure down the road they will be a playable race for everyone. Down the road.

There is no way I would pay $200 plus for a game which hasn't even been released yet.

MMO_doubter, you forget one thing. The only people who will get the lifetime subscription are the ones who know they will be playing it long enough to recover it's value. There is also a one year discount subscription some may try in order to give it a solid shot. Just because they offer this does not mean they are forcing everyone to take it. It is a bit like purchasing your first cruise over a year in advance. You aren't sure you will like it, but you will get value all the same. For the record though, the subscribers who do keep playing Cryptic games either stay with them or return to them(I am the latter being a casual gamer). Even City of Heroes, which started out with Cryptic, still boasts a huge number of loyal subscribers.
