I've been following the rumors for some time now hoping to find new tidbits of information.
I have EXTREMELY high hopes for Elder Scrolls Online. Oblivion is my all-time favorite game and if they can merge that kind of twitchy, FPS-style gameplay, that kind of character creation system, that kind of lore, and that kind of immersion based on a semi-realistic world and incredible voice acting (You can laugh all you want about the same voices being used over and over in Oblivion but Bethesda went for quality not quantity and I am VERY glad they did.), I would be in heaven. I know some exceptions will have to be made...I just hope there won't be too many.
I was waiting for an unofficially official announcement about this project ever since Bethesda registered the Elder Scrolls online website domain. I have no clue how they would begin to implement an Elder Scrolls game into an MMORPG setting but if they can pull it off I'll be there in a heartbeat. I do have a bit of a fear about the "World of Warcraft style MMOG" comment, however. I'm hoping that is just a placement used as a reference to MMORPG's in general since it would be identifiable to more people and not showing huge similarities (see: clone). Who knows, I certainly do not. I'll continue to keep my eyes on Bethesda and wait rather impatiently for the officially official announcement of the project.
Take oblivions gameplay and world mix it with WoWs dungeon system minus the lfg portion that just got released and you will have a very successful game.
I would have to disagree. If any instancing, or at least overly instancing, is used, it will be detracting so much from the over all world. And the open world is a major factor as to why Oblivion is so great. If you take that away, you're back to <enter generic mmorpg title here> and quite honestly I hope it doesn't go that route.
The less they pull from WoW the better, imo. Nothing against it really, but it's been done (to death) and there's a growing market for something NEW.
I guess you don't equate loading screens in offline games to instances in mmo's. I just got Oblivion this december so it is very fresh in my mind that yes it's an open world but seamless it isn't so I don't know that the instancing thing would be such an issue for Elder Scroll players, it's not like we are used to not getting our play interrupted (since it is every single time you enter any section of a city or any single dungeon in the game.
I'm not equating a loading screen to an instance; the two are far from the same. The best example I can give is Asheron's Call where no instancing was used (prior to housing portals and that was only in villas/mansions). There were "dungeons" but the entrances were portals that took you to a loading portal screen into the dungeon, where no part was instanced. This is what I equate Oblivion to being similar to and I feel strongly that instancing takes away from the true nature of MMO's in general.
It's not about the interruption due to a loading screen, it's the seperation and isolation of the community due to instancing.
"Are you excited for the potential of an Elder Scrolls MMOG? Can anyone say ultimate sandbox MMOG?"
Can anyone say "bug-filled unplayable disaster"? Take a moment to do a clean install of Oblivion. No mods, no third-party utilities, no replacement textures, just Bethesda's own code. Then consider that this will be an MMO, meaning Bethesda won't be able to rely on their usual crutch of a superb modding community. Unless they've actually hired coders and a QA department, an Elder Scrolls MMO is pretty much guaranteed to be a disaster of Cryptic proportions.
If it wasn't for the current state of todays MMO community, I'd be excited. But I know that todays community will be crying for balance, which is something Bethesda never was about before. In other words, Bethesda is going to have to water down the complexity of their single player game to please the masses. Now really, does that prospect really excite anyone?
Hopefully the WOW reference is for the unbloodied masses who are unsure of what an MMO is. I cannot imagine Bethesda downgrading their standard of graphics , nor their gameplay. This could be the game a lot of us have been hoping for.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Most people in that court would probably be unfamiliar with the term MMO, at least the concept of what it really is, but would more than likely know what World of Warcraft is, since it has invaded so much of our media. I'm going to go in the same direction as you grandpa, and cling to my hopes that it was just to explain to the unknowing what they were working on, and the faith that zenimax wouldn't tarnish the reputation it and bethesda have gained through their TES series, and now Fallout, by making another warcraft type mmo. Especially now when it seems to me, that the fanbase for skill based mmo's is broadening much more rapidly. The UO vets have wanted an mmo like that for a long time, and with the success of runescape, the appearance of darkfall heading the right direction after it's initial debacle, and the fact that oblivion, a skill based game in of itself was such an enormous hit for all the platforms it was made available to, a TES mmo, to me, would be the game myself and god knows how many more players out there were looking for, for the better part of a decade now. My only concern is from the tarnished faith I have in developers in general in providing an mmo that stays true to its initial IP. Even if they're the ones that created this one. Since there isn't a TES game that I don't like though, I think I'll do what I hate doing, but always end up doing anyway, and get my hopes up lol. I hope this doesn't mean that this is replacing TES5 or like what blizzard did, have it replace the series all together. It would be cheaper to do so, so I think it's a valid worry...
After the huge success of Morrowind and Oblivion it doesn't surprise me. I hope they add the vampire option on this MMO, or werewolves. I am wondering if the whole continent of Tamriel will be included.
I remember the first posting of this game, they said it was going to be a 150 million dollar project,of course i laughed and am still laughing. It was their parent or some subsidiary that was in control of this game,Bethesda is just a publishing name,i forget witch corp name they are putting the title under, got to have some form of credit loopholes in their some how, that is how big business does it.
I think ti may be at least worth checking out,Elder Scrolls was a decent game, albeit the cheap stick people are long outdated. The problem i see is that ,if they try to recreate an Elder Scrolls with just better graphics it will not be good enough, the game was not that great.Back in those days there was limited mechanics and limitations on what you could do in games,so they all played and looked the same, that just won't slide anymore. Now that MANY more people know what game developers CAN do,anything less is just poor effort and an attempt to get anything out fast to start churning out a profit.
Guess i have to get back to playing EQ2,my hopes lie with FFXIV ,if that game fails, idk i may have to start watching C rated movies .,well or just keep playing EQ2 .
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I just posted the link from massively.com in the rumor section but this works too! An Elder Scrolls MMO if done well will be great for the mmo genre. Perhaps there is actually mmo hope after all.
I disagree. People said that same thing about Warhammer remember?
Once again, MMORPG.com turn up at the party 7 hours late and without any alcohol :-) You guys really need to get your act together sometimes. This Elder Scrolls MMO was widely reported many, many months when Zenimax launched ZeniMax Online and registered the elderscrollsonline.com web address on the same day. So it's a continuation of already rampant speculation; it's not new as you would have everyone believe.
"Duck and Cover is reporting that Bethesda is seeking to redact details about a "World of Warcraft" type MMOG that they have been secretly working on since around 2006, which is being funded with "tens of millions of dollars" and staffed with "close to a hundred people" from court transcripts from their ongoing case with Interplay."
And exactly what about this statement leads you to believe that they are trying to make us believe they are breaking news here?
