Based on your inherit system, or bloodline system as it is called, you get different starting attributes. So explore some more of it tonight if you get a chance;)
The surname is there... well, just to be there i suppose, no use of it... yet.
The crafting system is very complex. To craft anything you need materials, you get them by harvesting them or by trading. Next, sometimes, you need a correct skill to even know how to craft some weapons or armor. You can learn various skills from books which are sold by vendors in starting towns. When you buy a book to learn a skill, you read it ral-time, meaning that, for example, 5 hours will pass until you learn to "understand the wilderness better" or "learn to make flat bows" etc. Something like learning skills in EvE.
Once you have the right skill and the materials, and a correct workbench, you can craft what you wanted to craft. So, when you look at it, its fairly complex, but kinda realistic the same way.
As for climbing, no. But i think there was a mention on the forums, by a dev, tht they are considering it.
P.S. if you need more answers, feel free to ask.

    Thanks! Really helpful ^^!

For the most part my MO experience I was only able to play for about an hour or so which in that time I was enjoying myself. The game was very empty it could use alot of work sure enough. But, its not that much of an issue it seems like I had the most difficult trying to figure out how to harvest for some reason I couldn't harvest any wood or ore. I was trying to go thru the Help screen "H" by harvesting I had my basic starting weapon equiped. I would see other players beating on a rock and I would try and do it, but I simply couldn't do it.

I opened up my skill lists. Went to technique then to mining / woodcutting put the hotkeys in my action bar on the top of the screen. I would go near the nodes or what I thought to be nodes and hit R. And I would try and harvest but came up with nothing. I didn't really wanna focus on that anyway but what I spent about 20 mins of my time trying to do. I'm sure its something I might of missed so its no biggie. Perhaps someone can tell me what I was doing wrong?

The next thing I did was sprint around rest trying to increase skills and snooping. Alot of people were calling guards on me as I was snooping their stuff lol. Guy even attacked me in town while I was snooping him. Reminded me the good ole UO days :) I think the thievery in this game is gonna set it apart from Dark Fall and the skill cap.

Nothing got my blood flowing more in MMOs than UO did. and this game was providing some memories of the times of old however only time will tell.

you cant mine/woodcut inside some of the towns, you need to go outside the guarded zone and try it, be in combat mode, and press the hotkey next to a rock/tree

     @Rygar

To mine, put your gathering skills in the hot bar, equip your axe, and go to anything that looks like a node in the world :) 90% can be mined! So, equip skills and your axe, go to a node and press the number on the hotbar where you put your gathering skill... Its the easiest thing to do in MO actually, not trying to make you look stupid or anything, believe me, when i first entered the game, 4 months ago, the only thing you could do was kill or gather. Im not much of a killer, so i mastered the other one ;)

Cool thanks for the info guys. Yeah, I'm not much of a miner or gather. In my UO days I was mostly a PK.  And the only reason I become a PK was I was tired of thieves stealing my reagants from me. So instead of waiting for them to turn grey before I could attack them without suffering a murder count, if I knew he was a thief I would attack him while he was blue which in turn turned me into a murder cause I was tired of the thieves lol. Ah the good times.

Well I just finished my Day on Mortal Online. It was quite the enjoyable experience for me. I created a Half Breed Character and loaded up the game. At this time, I expected to be ganked and griefed all afternoon, but amazingly It didn't happen once. I stepped into the town and started exploring. It seemed quite barren. There were very few NPCs and, apparently, no guards in the halfbreed town. I spent awhile just wandering around the town trying to get a feel for the game, before I found the exit to the fields full of weasels and domesticated pigs.

Around this time I started to get exceptionally frustrated, pigs and weasels would run away, and run away quickly. At that time I concluded the only way to kill them was to get them stuck against the wall or trees. (more on this later) Eventually, I had around 50 hides from the weasels and decided to try crafting some new armor. I read through the crafting tutorial to figure out how to craft, and went to it. I had more than enough hide to make myself a robe and enough bones to make a War hammer...which seemed like it did less damage than my newbie axe.

Someone with a nice two-handed sword approached me and asked me to spar with him. He said we'd only go to 1/4 health. Reluctantly, I agreed, expecting this to be some sort of trap. I was surprised to find out he was an honest and honorable person. And for the next 2 hours we beat the hell out of each other. Well actually, he beat the hell out of me, and I managed to get my rest skill to 80-something. But, after a while I was able to hold my own and the fights got much closer. We ended our sparring match when his sword broke against my head and we parted ways.

Feeling a bit more confident after learning the ropes on how to fight in the game, I set out for the weasel fields again just to measure how much better I'd gotten through only a couple hours of practice. No surprise when they started running from me. However, I did notice that my stamina bar had gotten much longer, or more efficient. I'm not sure which. Still, it didn't help much. Then finally I caught a break when I managed to get one before he reached a wall. It was a lot easier for some reason. I quickly realized that I had managed to hit him before he took off, and, briefly, I attempted to figure out how that happened. I soon realized I had walked up BEHIND the creature slowly and he didn't run off, letting me get the first hit. And since that first hit would drop him pretty low on health, his max speed was much lower when he took off, allowing me to catch him. Sure enough, I tested my hypothesis and it was true. You can sneak up behind animals and they won't bolt till after the first smack. That made my hunting trip much easier. (I was really excited to notice that. Hopefully there will be some AI for various species of animals and other NPCs in the game.) Using the fur I acquired, I spent the last bit of my time making some robes for some people before I logged off.

Over all, I had quite the enjoyable experience and am now watching this game intently to see how it turns out. The combat system definitely needs some work, but its not a lost cause. The combat was exceptionally slow, with 1.5+ Seconds between actually blocking/attacking after hitting the button. I'm not sure if thats due to crappy newbie weapons, low skills and lag, or the way the game is designed. The more subtle features I think really have potential to make it a good game. I really liked first person view, lack of global chat, the wide open world, severe reliance on stamina (everything consumes it, and you can't do anything without it), and AI beyond auto attack. I did have to turn motion blur off, because it gave me a headache. And the game ran rather well on my mediocre system. My biggest concerns (design wise) center around multiple characters. I think that has potential to ruin any sense of economy and make griefers a bit too self-sufficient. I suppose time will tell.

I do have some questions if anyone has the answers.

I tried to figure out how to cast spells and use magic all day, but I was unable to do so. Was Magic just turned off, or can Half-Orcs not use magic? I ask because the e. magic skill was Red to me and I couldn't figure out how to raise its pre-reqs. I did have reagents so it wasn't that.

I was also unable to craft any bows or shields. It said I didn't have the skills necessary to make any combination of bows/shields that I tried to make. I tried using Firmwood. Was I supposed to find a specific book first or something?

Can only help you with bows. You need to find a fletching workbench and use it (press R). It looks like a table with some bows on it.

Obbi, you need to have Material Lore for crafting too (In knowledge category): The two wood that you can use for begin are: Spongewood and Greywood i remember, you can look in your skill panel ;)

    Good luck in Mortal!
