I have to say, I find it rather entertaining that they are doing a stress test, BEFORE an open beta.

When's the last time you heard of that? The whole purpose of the open beta is to have the server nearly cracking so you make your optimizations, and then the stress test will just be a pass/fail on whether your open beta fixes worked.

I've given up on trying to understand this logic because there really isn't any -- and they certainly don't follow any mechanism of proper software development, so it will not be a huge wonder why they fail, when they do.

why you think this hercules?....where is the `problem of a strees test?

There's no problem with a stress test -- it just usually comes after an "open beta".

There are logical steps to software development that are kind of "prescribed" -- every software developer that has experience knows the process (more or less) and knows how to follow it. StarVault has no experienced programmers on staff, so they are making up the rules and testing as they go along.

It is done a certain way for a reason -- if you look at all the failures and near-failures as of late, the ones with the most problems are the ones that stepped OUTSIDE that process. Look at Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, Dark and Light, Fury, the Matrix Online, and a lot more -- they wanted to ship the game and took shortcuts, and ultimately, it cost them huge. Right now, Age of Conan lost $23 million after launch. They have not recovered from that, not even close. Much to the chagrin of what the MO developers tell you, Age of Conan is still in the red in terms of cost, and it's a LONG way off from breaking even. Same thing happened with Tabula Rasa, which lost millions too. NCSoft just cut their losses rather than having to deal with the ongoing costs of maintaining the MMO, because the returns simply weren't there.

I know that many people here have great faith in the 'potential' of MO. I did too, at least when they presented it on paper. But a company who collectively has never shipped a product, with developers who also have NEVER shipped a product, starting to make a vastly ambitious title with more depth and features than most other games on paper is a bad gamble. And as we see now, the gamble is not going to pay off. There are companies with a LOT of experience (Hellgate: London team) and they still were overly ambitious and failed. It's really not the developer's fault here either -- it's the management team's. You have to know the scope of what you can handle, how long it's going to take to build given your inhouse expertise, and then cut down to build the game you KNOW you can develop, rather than the game you HOPE to develop. That's how EVE worked, and that's why it is still around and doing great -- because they developed a CORE game that was great, and built off of that over time. People stuck around because the core of the game was a lot of fun.

Nobody's going to stick around MO for mediocre combat, mediocre crafting, and no tools to affect the sandbox world and create content. Sure, the fanboys will be happy for a while... but they too will leave because the game will be so buggy (because of the flawed development process) it will be a battle to fix the bugs, rather than to develop content. And if they try to do just the content to keep players -- they will lose more because the game breaking things like sync issues and the like that still exist, the flagging issues, etc.... have not been fixed, and people aren't going to keep playing an entirely broken game.

This game is going to die shortly after release, and it's sad to say as well -- but Darkfall actually followed a reasonable development process and are now in a position to start releasing real content. Granted, Darkfall is a bad game by design, but the features of the game pretty much work -- right now it's a matter of balancing which is non-existent. But the core features were done and worked during beta, a claim MO cannot have.

With a less than one day notice, I don't think they really wanted a lot of people to be playing.

I don't think there will be an open beta, but we'll see. I think release is going to come soon.

Yes, mediocre crafting. Sorry, but there are lots of games who have done crafting better. UO is one of them.

HerculesSAS does make some valid points, you cant deny that, yes im aware they ran out of cash, cash that was promised was cut down due to credit crunch etc etc, and knowing that I still bought the game, just to support and indie attempt..

They will learn or fail, but still wish them luck purely because they tried, I think everyone agrees its going to be a rough launch and a rough first 6 months, but hell thats like the freakin norm now a days anyway for major companies.

For now going to sub and watch for a bit, as intrigued if they can pull this off, plus im a sucker for the underdog.

What exactly is this? Can you just play the game during this stresstest if you have a MO account (without beta key or preorder)?
