I will single handedly destroy the entire mmo genre by supporting the item mall.  Then I will lean back in my office chair, lightly petting my collector's edition tribble and laugh my best Dr. Evil laugh.

agree 100% , i think like in RL games should be allowed to reflect who you are. I think all games should sell the best item  (EPIC or better ) in-game i have money and would shell out few hundred bucks for a a great ship and super weapons and shields. let the poor QQ grind out hours of mobs and let people that can pay move on to great content. see item shops can be really great. :)

You should not accept item mall in any game,i will tell you why.The reason is because it opens the door, once they get their foot in,they slowly go for more and more a little at a time .It is like gambling in Canada, they did not want it and all of it's problems, but they used their excuse that the money would be used for charities and hospitals and schools. That opened the door to their true agenda and that was filling their pockets with money at the expense of morals.

These games developers are giving us are so cheap now days and asking for a subscription to maintain it,we deserve a lot more from them.Instead they are using our subs to develop expansions then charge us again and using it to fund their day to day operations while they make other games. So i would not cut them any slack at all, they are just grinding money out of us.

Sorry but I live in Canada, and I'm a proud Canadian. Gambling has been around a long time and there's nothing wrong with it. The government takes quite a lot of money in from the various forms of gambling/lottery which actually does go to hospitals and charities.

Also I hate to break it to you, but that's what the subscription fee for MMOs has always been for. Continued development. Generally (as with singleplayer games) the development cost is meant to be recouped by the box sales. The subscription IS for funding continued development and running their day-to-day operations.

The stuff in the Cryptic Store will likely be just like what they have for Champions Online.  There, you can get a silly little pet figure that follows you around.  They don't fight, they don't give a bonus, they are just for looks.  Lots of players want to have cool things that do nothing but LOOK COOL.  And that is the purpose of the Cryptic Store.  If you don't care, then you don't have any reason to go there.  It's all asthetics.  They may have uniform options, pets, bridge options, etc.  Don't flip out.  It's not an "item mall", at least not in the sense of most other games who sell bonuses and high-end items through theirs.

Is it some double-dipping?  Yes.  Is it going to unbalance the game?  No.  Will it effect those who don't use it?  No.

It will provide them with some more money to put into the game, continue providing more free updates and content, and supply those with a like for shiny new objects for their characters too.

Well, my decision was made once they announced there'd be an item mall, but what assurance do you have they won't start slipping gamebreaking options in?  That's money in the bank for people who want to stay competitive.

Doesn't it make sense that everything should be available to everyone if they're paying a subscription?

Things that they can sell and I guess my cat wont hiss!

    Cosmetics...

    Additional slots...

Server Transfer, (as they are done manually in most cases)

Souvenirs or miscellaneous, like omg, i got that ST shirt , mouse, keyboard or whatever...

Extra inventory, well that is more in the server SQL, that run with some bucks u know...

If they want to give borg for 240bucks and lifetime suscription in the game, I dont really care, as long as the bord arent so uber, that pwns everyone else... like the jedis in galaxies precu omg!

I'll accept an Item mall to fluff up your character with, but in no way gives advantages over SOE's and Blizzard trading card game crap they integrate with their MMO's any day. The very thought of those SOE trading card games in their MMO's gives me a headache, it amazes me that anybody even finds those virtual trading cards remotely interesting in SOE or Blizzards MMO's. You'll have to be a right dorky dullard whose chance of being with the opposite sex is a distant dream to enjoy trading card games in MMO's.

To continue the CO comparison, CO has just announced their first expansion!  Yes, players get to pay for one zone that doesn't add new levels but only adds another way to do the last 4 levels.  This is a CO paid expansion!

F2P games have this sort of thing in their item mall.  P2P games are supposed to do this kind of thing for FREE.

Given the MANY similar design philosophies between CO and STO, I imagine within 6 months we'll hear about something like this for STO.

Edit:  Here's the proof, btw (scroll down a little bit and you'll see a post where an official says it is going to have a price tag)
