I played asherons call when it first came out and loved the game. I was wondering how the population is now I couldnt imagine it is very high. I saw they did some patches etc so they must still have some subscriptions. can anyone give me some insight into the state of the game to date?

They still do monthly content updates yes.
The population obviously isn't as high as it was in the first year but it's still high enough to have lots of fun.
Darktide is the most populated server and as you may remember is PK only. Frostfell is the highest regular server.
There is a lot more for people to do now so they are spread out over the world, but there is also general chat now so everyone can chat together. There are plenty of large active allegiances, which means you can easily get in one and run a lot of quests, hunt, etc.
The 10th anniversary patch helped boost the pops since it added new skills and brought people back. There is supposed to be a big spring update and they've hinted at some cool things coming for that. So if you are considering coming back it might be worth it to do it soon so you can level some guys up before that patch.
They've also mentioned they have been looking into adding new player races in the future, so there is a lot of exciting stuff going on right now. The game was kind of slow for a couple years but they've really made the push to make it more exciting and better in a lot of ways in the past year.
wow sounds like they are doing a lot of stuff. I would be tempted to come back to play darktide I think I still have a 126 character on my account. I think they should make the game free to play though and really get the population up.
could someone describe the gameplay as asherons call is to what and is there a trial?
http://trial.ac.turbine.com/ 14 day trial gives you the full game, so when you decide to sub it's just the 12.95 monthly fee.
It's tough to describe it quickly but it is fast combat, generally fighting many mobs at once as opposed to the one on one of most modern MMOs.
You can physically dodge spells and arrows by moving out of the way when you are paying attention. You can run really fast and jump higher then building.
Loot is random so you can find any nice item (Weapon armor etc) on any creature. Kill a rat and you might find an amazing sword. This makes the game fun since you never know when you'll get that next cool item and from where.
Tons of options on armor and weapons so you're character can be significantly more unique then other MMOs. Literally thousands of color combinations that can drop on armor.
Go where you want, do what you want. You can purely hunt your way to the top or quest. You can repeat almost every quest in the game so you get to choose what you spend your time doing.
Monthly updates of new content/features. So always something new to do.
Skill tree system instead of class system, make your character the way you want to be.
Quick travel to just about anywhere. No mounts in this game, instead there are portals. So you take a portal and boom you're across the map. Can get to just about any location in game in under 5 minutes. This means more time doing what you want.
Dungeons aren't instanced, so go in and join other players hunting or questing. The majority of quests have no limit to how many people can be in there at once, so allegiances can get large groups together and run through content.
Lots of types of damage and armor, meaning you do better as you learn what type of weapon/damage to use in what spots.
Thousands of quests, can always find something you haven't done before.
There's plenty more but I don't want to run out of space and write a 3 page paper on it. To sum up it is different and very fun. Take a couple days to get used to it and you'll be having a blast.
I'll play devil's advocate. Reasons why AC isn't quite so popular...
- Dated graphics and UI.
- Some hardware incompatibility. There is a chance it may not work with your router, modem, or ISP. Even after you overcome those issues you still may have to futz with your firewall, anti-virus, or ports to get the game to run.
- Rubber banding (your char will suddenly move far ahead or jump back to a place you were a second ago). Doesn't happen THAT much, but it does happen, and it's annoying.
- Somewhat complicated game play. It's almost impossible to play the game without consulting third party sites. Some mechanics (crafting, spell research) are a bit convoluted. Quest guidance is often vague. Also the game does not lead you from one quest to another like other newer MMO's.
