2010 the year of the mmo struggle

With Tor being announced for a 2011 release and the PC Gamer release meter for 2010 it looks like mmos are going to take a fall in 2010. Sure there may be a few like Global Agenda, APB and Sto but these kinda games are going to be spurts of play, maybe 3 months and then burnt.

No , 2010 is the year of the Single Player / Multiplayer gaming with Diablo 3, Mass Effect 2, StarCraft 2,  Crysis 2, Rage, Battlefield 1943 dominating while we wait for 2011 to roll around.

Lol just because one game got pushed to the next year? Mortal online, earthrise, cataclysm, DC universe, FF14, Lego universe, TERA...the list goes on, one game is not the entire genre.

Ummm hate to tell ya buddy but.. Diablo wont even be released in 2011 let alone 2010.

    Blizz has said so themselves.

Well in 09 failed at MMO's and 10 is going to suck also. Lame

Blizzard haven't mentioned anything about D3 not releasing in 2011. The only statement that has been made is that it won't be released in 2010. The rest is speculation

EVE is still alive and kicking. There is no sense waiting another year or more just to be let down by another over-hyped game when you can play a great one now :)

The only two Im really looking forward to, Copernicus and The Secret World, dont have release dates yet so 2011 doesnt even look that great to me.

    From some article about Copernicus:

"As you may already know, former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling founded a game company called 38 Studios after he retired from baseball. Their first project, a fantasy MMO dubbed "Project Copernicus", could be out by the end of next year according to the Boston Globe (thanks, BigDownload).

38 Studios has set a tentative release date of December 2010. However, they'll need to scrape together a lot of money to make that target. The company says they'll need roughly $50 to $100 million dollars to complete the game.

Schilling's hoping to attract new investors, but they're gun shy for three reasons: 1) MMOs are risky and expensive, 2) the economy sucks, and 3) a new fantasy MMO stands a fair chance of getting its poo pushed in by World of Warcraft. Still, as I've said before, you can be very successful in the MMO field even if your subscriber base is only a small fraction of the size of World of Warcraft."

    Honestly, I lol'd.

Yeah I really have a hard time believing they would be ready to release this year or next year. I would think if it was coming along well that they would be talking more about it by now.

You can add mmo struggle since 2007 or maybe a year after WoW release.  We get quanity instead of quality these days because the devlopers have devised a secret forumula for success in their eyes. Average mmo(unfinished)+subscription+item mall = success.

2010 will be alot better than 2009 thats for sure, im really looking forward to TERA and FF14.  If those suck i guess play cataclysm for a several months before i get bored and wait for the next expansion. I have already cut my $75 loss on Mortal and it hasn't even released yet.  Never was as star trek fan so i haven't even looked in STO and probably never will.

You can't really replicate games in this genre and expect epic success, because the game you replicated from has a few years of advantage in development as MMOs aren't static.

But it seems they found out the formula for generating small investment successes as mentioned by SaintViktor, and that's what the people investing are after, a secure profit as trying to get far from the current theme park designs involve risk.

In my opinion, by design, MMOs are already at a huge disadvantage at combat, which is what 90% of MMOs aim for by doing theme parks. You can't compete against single player experiences in this regard, neither graphically nor complexity-wise, and people aren't seeking mathematical battles. In my opinion MMOs should focus on the persistent open world massive feeling along with socialization, emphasizing the differential MMOs have that no single player will ever be able to provide - an experience with a lot of people from all over the world, an environment of community that also can't be achieved in real life.

But they keep instancing it, making localized servers, emphasizing solo gameplay. While this reduces the costs to allow the quick returns investors aim for because there's enough people paying for it (MMOs are still cheap entertainment that last a lot more than a single player game, but they are increasing the revenue forms as they aren't expecting people to stay in for a long time in the community in these games), it does not make the real long term successes.

I have already cut my $57 loss on Mortal, which everyone told me to wait 6 months on anyways, but who cares? I decided I'd pass my judgement now. and it hasn't even released yet.  Never was as star trek fan so i haven't even looked in STO and probably never will. Not like Cryptic's worth my money anyways.

No offense meant, I just got bored and was just having a little fun. Hope you don't get too mad. D:

All intentions meant, LEGO Universe is my most anticipated.

Yeh lego universe does seem like a great game but i don't think it would really satisfy a hardcore gamer but for casuals, yeh thats one game to definitely look out for.

Well you are right about the $57 the rest was a bit off.  Im chasing my Lineage 2 addiction that wow cant provide.  As with Mortal well, i really like the concept, i just didn't think a game could be so unfinished and empty.  Was more of an impulse buy that i made early december after i quit Aion.

LEGO Universe could be fun i may have to check that one out.
