Here is a recent 4 part video series put together by Valroth on character development.   Watch these in fullscreen HD if you can.  The videos are an excellent glimpse into the world of DF from start  into PVP, and I think after watching them, a trial really isn't necessary...

Basically there's a lot of killing goblins, kobolds, and trolls... and then killing some more... and then more....  I know the videos were put together by Valroth to showcase DF in the best light, but after watching them, I'm left with meh...

I'd say if you still have a desire to play this game after watching these videos, go for it.

Although I know you're trying to dis Darkfall, I think that's a great idea because those vids are an awesome resource. They don't show all that the game offers but it does show how fun it is. So thanks for the plug, even though you didn't mean it that way.

I think this vid gives you a better idea of what to expect in the game.

The problem is Ozy  you can access that fun content only if you do your portion of monthly mob grind first. OP has a point that it repulses an awful number of potential players.

    Thanks.

What I'd also like to see would be a "let's play Darkfall", where someone creates a new char from scratch (or just starts the game) and records from beginning on the entire playing and puts it up on youtube. :)

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

The game is fun from day one, You could say the same about all MMORPG with lvl ect. I could if I wanted make a brand new char and go straight to a siege with my guild and stay in the back and use archery for instance. Let the big guns go in for melee.

It a shame I cant do end game content in WoW on my first day... or any lvl based mmo...

OHNO!!!! You mean this MMORPG, called Darkfall...has a grind, and requires you to advance your character before you can jump into the high-end content???

Well....wait.....it's that kinda normal for an MMORPG??

    Seriously, people.

So people know... this wasn't made to showcase DFO.  It was started as a quick advancement guide to new players.  His stats after 8 hours are well beyond what a new player would achieve without watching any of the videos.

I am new and found these videos to be totally indicative of what the game is like and how to dive in quickly.

But that isn't fun for many people...

We don't play games to be the complete weakling who sits in back flinging arrows for barely any damage. We all want to be the badass up front who is kicking the crap out of the enemy.

In WOW, you could travel to a level 80 zone on day one and be just about as effective as a noob in Darkfall during a battle with vets. Just hope that nothing targets you the whole battle and you might survive... But I would hardly call anything you do at that stage useful even in Darkfall.

Last night I hacked down 50 Goblin Scouts (working on my title quest) and then went with my clan to take on some tougher mobs.  I was the guy in the back lobbing arrows, doing little damage and I enjoyed every minute of it... go figure.

Personally the 1 hour kill quests are as much, if not more fun then any quest I've ever done in an MMO. I'm bored sick of the "go here fetch this or go there and kill that" quests we always so in themepark MMOs. Give me some armor, a sword, and mob name and I'll make my own fun. I don't need devs telling me exactly where to go. Sandbox MMOs ftw!!

That is a huge exaggeration.  You try that in WoW and a monster from a mile away will agro on you and look at you funny and you will die.

Darkfall you can do anything, right from day 1.

From day one, minute 1 you can:

Drive any boat or raft, fire any cannon, ride any mount, go to any part of the world, wear any armour, use any weapon, go to any dungeon, fight anyone, use slot machines, get a house, harvest any item, craft every profession, trade with anyone.

That's called an FPS, not an mmo.

I don't think the grind is bad at all, I've skilled up nicely in three weeks. I do think stats should be boosted a bit but they're not bad. Skills are just fine I think, not a huge grind but not handed to you either. I think some people just like to argue for the sake of arguing.

For what it's worth, I'm having a lot of fun developping my character. I could have spent much more time grinding my character up, but I don't care. Do I lose in PVP all time? Hell no, but it's clear that I'm losing more than I'm winning. This doesn't bother me. Like I said it's a pleasure building up my character. I'm not in a rush.

I couldn't agree more with your statement: "if a game is only worthy for its endgame content it is garbage at its lower lvls and i wouldnt touch it." I really feel the same way.

I must say I've been gaining interest in Darkfall over the past few months (which doesn't really say much except that it's apparently somewhat less disastrous than I initially thought it was), but this video didn't really improve my view of the game much. I think this is a shame, because I was actually looking forward to giving this game a try in an admittedly fairly distant (i.e. when the game has gone through several more upgrades) future.

My two questions I would like to see answered in response to this video:

    1. Is the game really as repetitive as the video in OP implies? That's not saying that's a bad thing, mind you, but it would just be something I personally would not appreciate. Is the game really about running back and forth killing goblins, banking the money and items you make in the process? I realise there's more to it than that, for instance in the form of sieges, but is there anything besides sieges? Can I, for instance, if I rather would, become a crafter and craft complicated, expensive items for a profit, and if I choose to do so, will that also mean that, BECAUSE I focus on crafting, I will be a better crafter and be able to craft significantly better products than somebody who mostly focuses on combat and does crafting on the side? Or can a character excel at everything, eventually probably leading to that same repetitive gameplay of gearing up and going for sieges?

    2. Does the game's combat system shoe-horn you into a particular play style as strongly as the video suggests? From what I can see, one has to take up magic on the side and focus on melee skills. Is it a viable option for me to only focus on melee, to only focus on ranged, or to only focus on magic? By this, I mean to ask whether I could choose to ignore melee, for instance, focus on magic instead, and still have a fairly equal chance (obviously depending on personal skill) of beating an equally skilled opponent who has opted for melee.

Alright, those were probably more than two questions, but the bottom line is: to what extent is this game really a sand-box rather than a MMOFPS with some RPG elements like skills and stats tacked on?

Again, let me reinforce that I do not aim to belittle Darkfall here. The question mostly boils down to a matter of taste, and mine simply is not with constant siege warfare and IS with a full-fledged sand-box game. My reason for asking is that I appear to find it hard to really judge this game for what it is from the comments you read everywhere. Obviously, there's fanboys, and obviously, there are trolls, and it seems that even most official reviewers (see Eurogamer, for instance) can be counted under either group. What the internet seems to be lacking is a proper, objective review of Darkfall which tells the audience what to expect when they decide to start playing the game.

That isn't what I'm suggesting at all. I agree that a good MMO needs character progression. I just think it is a little extreme in Darkfall since you will still get schooled by veterans after months of grinding for no other reason than that they have played more than you...

I agree that you can play and have fun from day one. The problem is that your role as the weakling doesn't change for ages. It just takes too long to get to the best part of the game. As far as I can tell, it takes much longer to get to the point of really being considered STRONG than it does in almost any other MMO I have played.

I was just hoping for a little more balanced PvP and a little less grind to get there... Other than that, I am still loving the game.

I just bought it today and made an Alfar. I've only been in game for about 1 1/2 hours and right now I'm resting up at the goblins. I must say I am pleasantly surprised at how fun combat is. I havemt been PKd yet. I thought I was earlier but a guy just wanted to skin the tombstones from the goblins I was killing. He is leaving me alone for now.

I'll come back in a couple days and comment once I see more but for now I am having fun. Sword skill 12  now hehe ) Time for more goblins

Go buy a knife and skin everything you kill.  Save these and sell them to enchanters.  You can make a lot of money from this.
