Here it is.

The Journey Begins…

Thank you all so very much for making this entire Beta experience as awesome as it has been.

I could look back and reminisce about the downtimes. I could wax nostalgic about the patches. I could even recall every exploit with distaste and still fondly remember the awesome emergent gameplay you've shown us... And yet, all that implies an end. Sure, the test is over. But, in reality, this is only the beginning.

We’ve been working without rest for nearly two years to reach this moment -- the moment when we can begin expanding Star Trek Online in earnest. The years ahead when we get to work directly with you to figure out what we add next to the game, where we fill out content, and what new systems we might add. That's real development. That's live development.

Not a team to just sit back and wait, we’re already working on content additions, bug fixes and 'quality of life' improvements that we’re going to roll out over the next couple months. Here are a few of the things we’re working on:

The Borg

The Borg have planned. They have adapted. They have evolved. What the Borg cannot assimilate, they will destroy.

You saw a little Borg action in our End of Beta event – prepare to see more. The Federation have tracked down the Borg staging ground for their assault on the Alpha Quadrant. Join up with Battle Group Omega and take the fight to the Borg. Experience new Federation Episodes, Borg Exploration Clusters, deep space encounters. Also expect daily missions for these tasks to maximize the rewards you’ll be getting for helping out Starfleet in the Gamma Orionis Sector.

"Raid-i-sodes"

These are the high-end episodes you’ve been waiting for. Locked to 5-players, you’ll need every trick and every bit of teamwork to complete these challenges.

A Borg raid-i-sode series culminating in an encounter with the Borg queen is on its way. Expect a couple other “loose ends” to be addressed in the future, as well.

Available for both Klingon Generals and Starfleet Admirals, we’ll be releasing a new one of these every few weeks for the next three months.

First Update

We’re already working on it and it’ll be out before you know it.

The first update is going to have more PvP, Klingon exploration content, more ground fleet actions, more ship costume pieces, more playable species, and then some.

Bugs and Reactions to Them

Of course, like any MMO, we’ll scramble during the first couple weeks reacting to new bugs. putting in quality of life fixes, and closing exploits that weren't exposed to us during Beta.

We’ll be fine tuning as well, but don’t expect thoughtless or harsh changes to game balance. We’re more than willing to wait and make sure everything we do is measured and calculated.

Expect a public test shard to become available real soon, too. We’ve named her "Tribble." This is where the brave Captains (read: addicted testers) amongst you can try out our changes before we push them live. If you’re one of those who can’t get enough of the bleeding edge of development – or have a penchant for finding bugs and balance issues – keep an eye on the forums for details.

So, thank you again for the awesome Beta, but the fun begins now.

We have years of development left in us and a universe of content still to add. Here’s where it gets interesting... Here’s where you help us figure out what comes next.

I, for one, am looking forward to taking that journey.

-Zn

Hopefully They come through.

I for one enjoyed beta, for all it's issues and flaws to the ST IP, this game has the potential to be a keeper for me, let's hope they don't drop the ball. I'm looking forward to the many years of space battles and tribble love STO has to offer.

I can remember the exact same type of letter during Champions Online's launch.

People are still waiting for those promisses and new content to fill up the gaps. And now they announced the new content to fill up some of those gaps (wich Cryptic created themselvs at launch with the last minute XP nerf). People will have to pay for it!

So these type of letters don't impress me no more. Not a single bit.

First see. Then believe!  Especially when it comes to Cryptic!!

    Money talks and bs walks.

Quite simply if the game doesn't fall off the deep end in the first two months, the updates and content will come eventually.  But if it's not making its economic goals, the CEO will cut the team down to a skeleton crew and put in on life support.

Not flaming or trolling, just stating how the world works.

That said, I liked the game.  Just felt that it was released WAYY to early.  Why do people need to wait for core content to be added?

It is the new bussiness model for, some, MMORPG devs. It is called release a beta and have paying customer finance adding in the final pieces.

After what they just did with CO I can't help but wonder how much it will cost us for an end game that should be in the game already that they will label as an 'expansion' and try and charge us for it 45 to 60 days from now.

Cryptic indeed has a bad track record so I guess we will indeed see what is true and what is false, as things go they have lied to us about a number of planned features that never made it in, so I would be weary from this point on to listen to what they actually say and do.

Damar: I'd like to toss that smug little Vorta out the nearest airlock. And his Founder with him.

Gul Dukat: [laughs] Now, now, Damar, that's no way to talk about our valued allies. Not until this war is over, anyway.

Champions Online was a bust when Marvel pulled the IP (Intellectual Property Rights) midway through production (Marvel didn't think they could compete with DC Universe). They released it anyway as a different game but didn't have the big name backing and features like having Marvel characters in it. Star Trek's IP was pulled 2 other times by Paramount/CBS before it ended up in Cryptics hands. The last thing anyone wants with IP is to see it dragged in the mud because then it loses value in the long run. They won't sit like George Lucas did with Star Wars Galaxies (George is now just a money man, did you see that he approved Clone Wars????). They want to make money and keep the genre ACROSS the media spectrum valuable. I bet the IP legal agreement on this is going to help push Cryptic to succeed where in Champions they lacked... and the fact alone that they had Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto do voice overs shows they are getting added support. The IP holders are using this game for money and marketing, and neither does well unless the game succeeds. Hence... where the added kick to the but to make it do so will come from.

Beta is nice for those of us who know that this is a Work in Progress, while others who are not used to it always leave with a bad taste in their mouth. If you don't like it now, try it in 3-6 months, most MMOs are a different game in that time frame, and maybe it is one you will like.

I personally like it and so does my guild so we will be in their regardless.

    Thanks for the BETA.

    It was fun!

I'll be there on Openning day ,and I'll give you 6 months to show me that you are willing to fix your game for free. I played COH/COV and for what it was it was ok.

I didn't like the cash shops and if you do that same thing to STO, I will leave you again for the last time. So my only answer to you then will be, GO TO.........some other country and sale your.......stuff.

The things we do for love.

Well, as long as you can get a few months of fun out of it, what's the big difference, not a lifetime commitment unlike the one you made to your wife.

Like others, after yesterday's news, I have to wonder how much the first update will cost.

I'm sure I'll try the free weeknd they're sure to have in 3 months because they're desperate to get more subs, or maybe even buy the box for $10 when it hits the bargain bin during the same time frame.

I cant wait for this game to come out.  You think the reports are bad now...wait until the general public gets its hands on it.

  • AgtSmithAgtSmith Member Posts: 1,498

I was working this up to post over at the STO forums, though I would include it here.

I found this one on the most telling such addresses I have seen in a long time.  First, the overall tone is so inauthentic, like it was written totally by the marketing team.  Second, several key statements immediately had me reeling with the thoughts that popped up as I read the statement.

Is it just me or did he just list a bunch of bad things and then conclude with 'this is only the beginning'?  Sadly, I think that might be the most accidentally truthful developer comment ever.

We’ve been working without rest for nearly two years to reach this moment -- the moment when we can begin expanding Star Trek Online in earnest. The years ahead when we get to work directly with you to figure out what we add next to the game, where we fill out content, and what new systems we might add. That's real development. Wow, two whole years?  Gee, that is quite, uhm, unremarkable.  I should think they would have the intelligence to realize most MMOs get 5 years or so of development time and advertising, let alone bragging, about how tired they are spending 2 years on an MMO.  But beyond that bit of gall and disconnect, the last couple comments really indicate a serious problem with Cryptic (paraphrasing), 'live is where real development beings'???  No wonder there games are considered so shallow, so lacking in content, and overall so romper room.  Even if they truly believe this, as opposed to just being too cheap to fully develop for several years and release a complete game, how can they be so tone deaf as to the criticism of their products and the industry as a whole to make that comment?  Really stunning, and again, really revealing.

Cannot help but react to this thinking to myself, hrm - maybe if you guys where not oh so tired from that marathon 2 years of development you could have had these things in at launch.

Not to mention given what is happening with Champion's I doubt all this teaser info will be free so take the anticipation with a grain of salt.

Of course, like any MMO, we’ll scramble during the first couple weeks reacting to new bugs. putting in quality of life fixes, and closing exploits that weren't exposed to us during Beta.

Does Obama right Cryptic's state of the game addresses?  Thought maybe so, the uncanny similarity in blaming others to excuse your own shortcomings is curious.  But that aside, and even acknowledging the truth of it, I wonder again about how much of this would have been exposed with a proper beta and not so short 2 years of development.

We’ll be fine tuning as well, but don’t expect thoughtless or harsh changes to game balance. We’re more than willing to wait and make sure everything we do is measured and calculated.

You mean like the thoughtless and harsh change in beta to combat that you had to undo a day or so later?  Or are you talking about the ill-measured and poorly calculated change from a no skill cap game to a skill cap game just days before release?

Expect a public test shard to become available real soon, too. We’ve named her "Tribble." This is where the brave Captains (read: addicted testers) amongst you can try out our changes before we push them live. If you’re one of those who can’t get enough of the bleeding edge of development – or have a penchant for finding bugs and balance issues – keep an eye on the forums for details.

This was impressive I thought.  A company so committed to development quality they will have two servers dedicated to full time testing, Holocron (the main live servers) and this new Tribble server.  Nice.

So, thank you again for the awesome Beta, but the fun begins now.

We have years of development left in us and a universe of content still to add. Here’s where it gets interesting... Here’s where you help us figure out what comes next.

I, for one, am looking forward to taking that journey.
