Well, I am not sure I want to buy that game, as you have noted, no free trials due to servers unable to host players which are fairly full already. So, if purchusing the game I have to worrie about massive amounts of players online at the same time. At what point do I have to wait in long queses because X number of people decided to buy darkfall? I would think that the MMO part ment that massive amounts of poeple could play instead of a limited number of players. Leaving me to ask...at what point does the server become...overloaded for the buyer.
AV keeps track of subscription base and when the server reach almost full load they open a new one.
They did this with EU, when it got full they opened NA.
Now they both getting full again and in the next few months they will open a new one.
Giving free trials will overload the current servers and make them unplayable, therefore defeating the point of the trials
As a subscriber you should not worry....................by not allowing the free trials, they are protecting the paying customers, so their game experience is always good.
You should appreciate that.
Let me get this straight. If all us "on the fence" people would wake up one day and decide "what the heck, Ille just buy it" and cause this lag you keep whining about, you wouldn't be upset? I mean, sure, we're all lagging, but we're PAYING subscribers, right?
Your argument seems flawed. Especially since, given the whole trial-island idea, they could make a (smaller) server dedicated to that island? Ever thought of that? Offcourse you haven't. You seem to be shooting down ideas without thinking of a solution. But hey, what do you care? You're paying, you should get everything you ask for. *cough*.

There just is no easy way to implement a trial in DF without compromising the games values.

I dont know what lag you guys are talking about, ok i dont know about NA but on the EU server i have a constant ping of 12-20ms, lagspikes are really uncommon...

The only way to do a trial and not effect the world is probably building a trial island like others have said... Something that takes away the devs resources that are put towards improving the game and maintaining a good retention.
A zerg guild of 150 could start up 150 trial accounts, and naked zerg any of the other guilds in the games hamlets or cities that have 10-20 people on average, kill them, loot them, wreak havoc, and then delete and make new ones. This is just an example. There is so much damage that can be caused.
Now the only way I think something like this could work is if each player in game was allowed 1-3 buddy invites to try out the game for say 5 days. It opens up the same problem, but there is a limit at least. Also these buddies should not be allowed to equip any siege equipment, start guilds, etc.
OHHH I got an idea. All towers in the game besides the trials starting race area are set to mutilate trial characters causing their heads to implode. Easy, effective, deadly, sexy, violent, and a little funny.
You guys are starting at a good time leading up to DF 2010. You will be just seasoned enough to do to the new players coming in what is going to be done to you haha. It's a vicious cycle.
And this is the only thing that is keeping me from buying the game....the one and only thing.
I have watched SO many DF videos of the big PvP battles and even newb tutorials, and well...all kinds of DF videos. And the game looks SO exciting and fun, but I wonder if it's a server full of ex-WoWtards that enjoy nothing more than talking smack and killing players that have no hope of survival. What's competitive about that? How does it boost your ego to kill someone that takes no real skill or effort to kill? I guess I'll never understand that.
Now...I do understand killing them to steal their stuff....but repeatedly killing them just for the joy of killing someone that has no hope of being able to fight back and hold their own? That doesn't even make sense to me. And I have a strong suspicion...that there's a lot of that that goes on. And the only purpose that serves....is to keep the newb unable to play and rise to a competitive level.
I guess my concern is being frustrated constantly by newb killers, and then not being about to enjoy the game or make any progress. And so many DF players when they post here...sound like they must spend most of their time just running around killing newbies.
How do you even PLAY at all, when you're constantly getting PK'd? I don't hate PvP....but just ganking for the sake of ganking someone, because they're a newb with no developed skills, and all of your skills are many multiples greater, because you've been playing 6 months longer....that just seems like, yet again (as in most other games), PvP without a REASON. That's not competitive at all. That's just one person taking delight in keeping someone else from even working on their skills so they CAN compete.
I would expect to be killed daily (maybe many times) in an FFA loot PvP game. However, if most of the people playing have the mentality and attitude that killing newbs is the ultimate of "fun," that kind of takes the purpose out of even playing for me. I would like to find a game where PvP has a reason. Even Fallen Earth, which I enjoy, has got some kind of messed up PvP at the moment, since factions don't seem to mean much right now. There's no way to tell your faction mates from your enemies....
I don't know....maybe I'm just what DF players would call a carebear. It's just when I fight...I want to fight someone who can fight back.
EDIT: By the way....I TOTALLY agree with NOT having a trial. Having experienced the influx of ignorance that the FE trial has brought forth....I don't think trials do much to help a game after a point. It's almost as if trials are moron magnets. But...having said that, it's also brought some really great people to the game, since the wheat and chaff are pretty easily separated when you see people in help channel saying things like, "ZOMG THIS GAME SUX THERES NO AUTO ATTACK? FUCK THIS. ENJOY UR GAME NUBS. I'M OUT."
Oh how sad...and we're REALLY gonna miss you too....
Ganking isn't that big a deal guys, I don't know why so many people worry about it. Yes, you will get ganked so if that's a problem I wouldn't play. After all, that's what Darkfall is about, PvP. If you find a good guild and play smart it's not a big deal. But this kind of PvP isn't for anyone, I know, I sound like a broken record.
So many people just stand there on the sidelines saying, "wow, that looks like it hurt, I'm not sure I want in coach". Either play or don't lol, it's not a life threatening decision here, it's JUST A GAME!

While you will have people coming in here to flame the post and call you a carebear, I understand where you're coming from. I feel the best way to approach the problem you have with the game is to look at those murderers the same way you look at them in real life. They're sociopaths with no real joy in their life besides bringing misery onto other people.
And let me tell you, my friend, that these people are one of the biggest reasons I play Darkfall. I loath them. They feed off of the weak and steal from them, harass them, and basically try to do everything they can to scare away new players. And yet, I love that they exist, because they give me something to hate.
They give that sense of fear and adrenaline when you see another player running towards you and you aren't exactly sure what their intention is. They give you something to strive for, a reason to get your skills up. There are roaming bands of murderous assholes riding around looking for easy pickings.
Your job is to get strong enough to form roaming bands of guards, and kill them. It was what I did in UO, and it's what I do in Darkfall.
TBH, there's really no smack-talking in game though.....any time I get killed I don't get /tells or anything.
Now the forums....that's different...but it's mainly clans talking shit to each other in preperation for war.
And TBH, ganking's not really that big of a deal. It's nowhere near as common as it once was....mainly I think because most true griefers have moved on to other games, and most people have better shit to do than grief new players.
Yes, there are still murderers, bandits, etc....but see the first line of this post as to why.

Man, it's fun.
Having played UO, and being rather a huge RP'er...heh...THIS highlighted part....makes me want to play even more. lol I guess looking at it from that roleplayer's perspective....would definitely give it more meaning and make it....fun. And I really like the idea of rushing in to SAVE some newbs (when I get stronger) from murderers and thieves....bwahahahaha!
Well....today we're filing our income taxes and with electronic filing....I think I should be able to plan on buying DF in about two weeks. Yup...I think I'm just gonna HAVE to DO it. I've been lurking on the forums and YT vids for too long...it's time to just take the plunge, I think.
And oh well...so what if I die a lot? One day...I shall have my justice! heh

Also, a lot of time n00b killers will run like Hell when they see a decently armed player come running from town to fight...regardless of weather you actually have the skills to take them or not.
I personally try to give new players a bit of protection when I am able.

I've been playing DF for about a week now and I've finally gotten my stats up where I can hold my own somewhat with noob gankers. Yesterday a red ganked me while I was killing multiple goblins and I was lucky enough to find him still there when I got back. I went after him full force melee while he tried in vain to shoot me with arrows....he ran off and swam away like a little pussy and I felt REALLY good even though I couldn't catch him and finish him off.
Once I get even stronger I'll do whatever I can to help noobs from being ganked by little shithead cowards...you can count on that.
My name in game is Guy Lisbon and I approve this message.
Oh...don't hesitate to buy and play this game - it's as awesome as everyone says it is
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
You don't have to be too worried about noob gankers. Mainly this occurs in human lands, and around camps that are close to towns. If you happen to play a human, and play in the more popular areas you will have random gankers come through. Often times there are other players to assist and end up killing the gankers letting you loot their stuff which can be fun. It isn't that big of a deal really.
DF is more about stats than items/money lost or gained. I have constantly grown my money and stock of items since I started the game. When I want armor or weapons made I make a quest for myself to gather all the mats and have it crafted so I rarely use what is in my bank. There is a curve that you cross over quickly where you become self sufficient and getting ganked is never really that bad it's just the way of the world. It may seem horrible at first to lose some ore or some items, but once you cross this curve you can get three times whatever you lost in a fraction of the time and this curve is based solely on gameplay experience, and skill/stat gain which no one can take away from you.
There are also guilds now like the NEW guild that has a city right by human lands where you will be mostly safe and can learn the ropes. There are downsides to freedom, but the upsides greatly outweigh them unless you want to have your hand held and be guided through the hundreds of hours you put into a game.
I think of it like this... If I go to visit some ancient cave which housed a lost civilization inside of a mountain that was just discovered would I rather go along with a bunch of tourists on a guided, roped off, tour where the entire path is mapped out with little variation? Or do I want to be the one who just stumbles upon it, go into the world, explore, climb, look around, and spend as much time as I want on the parts that really intrigue me? I'm an adventurous person. When my dad and I go on outdoors vacations we also go off path, up into mountains, and down into canyons. The point is I like freedom and all the dangers and excitement that come with it.
And no, I'm not a big fan of having my hand held and being led by the nose. I like exploring too much...lol. So I expect I'll die a lot. I don't usually freak about dying in a game. Now if someone comes and jacks my shit in RL....I'm probably gonna be a bit uhm....miffed.

Also, a lot of time n00b killers will run like Hell when they see a decently armed player come running from town to fight...regardless of weather you actually have the skills to take them or not.
I personally try to give new players a bit of protection when I am able.
One day...I shall have my justice! heh
Thanks, Prof!
