Let me bring you in on a secret. "Old" means "ten years older than I am".

you know even thouse Champions is touted as a twitch game i've found as long as your not a PvPer even twitch games can be done slow and steady

Hell STO was pretty twitchy but really all you need to do is hold d to keep turning while in combat or to perodiacly double tap a arrow to roll on the ground. most of the time it's stand and shoot.

I am aware I am going to be repeating whats already been said but I would also recommend Eve Online.

Its a slow passed game with slow deliberate moves. Yes its a harsh game, very harsh where mistakes are paid for dearly, carebares beware. But You can just as easily play the game in Empire space (safe none PvP areas) without worrying too much.

You will also find that a lot of the population are mature individuals. While I was forced to leave before Xmas due to returning to college as a mature 30 yr old :D I was playing up till then and we had around 350-400 ppl in the Alliance I ran and almost all of them were over 18 with the majority between 25-40. We still had a good few over that with one who was 63 or 65 if I remember correct.

Eve online, its a winner. Oh, and btw. If you get a buddy to invite you and you like it and pay (even after the 1st day) they will add on any of your free days you have left onto your subscription. Plus you will never have to pay for expansions.

If I had the time to game atm I would be there :)

Sadly, if our OP likes PvP, I can only see more online games going to twitchy controls over strategizing. If you incorporate a human factor into PvP, then game balance becomes more a factor of skill and less a factor of developer balancing. Gamers inherently understand that there's a balance between the powers/skills you have and one's ability to use those powers effectively. This is a big part of why I don't engage in PvP. I have plenty of games that minimize the inherent game dynamic and focus more on player skill (fighting games, for instance), so if I want to be competitive, I can get my fix without playing a MMO. And if the MMO market decides that carebears or non-PvPers have no place in it (old or young), then I'll move on to single player RPGs.

I most certainly get where the OP is coming from. I just turned 39 and while I'm competent in my gaming, I'm by no means a master of PvP. In fact, I'd have to say I'm being generous if I considered myself average. I guess we just have to accept the reality that this type of game is just coming into its own, and rejoice in the fact that there are a LOT of really dextrous gamers out there that are going to enjoy them, while we wait for games like FFIV to get our online gaming fix.

    Yes, agree with OP

I am an older woman with poor hand - eye co-ordination, but I love my games:) Been playing mmorpgs for over 10 years now. I was always getting ganked in WOW because I just couldn't react quickly enough

I too am looking forward to Final Fantasy for all the reasons stated above.

At the moment I am playing Atlantica Online, which is a turn based game, and I find it quite easy to play. I even do a bit of pvp occasionally ^^. It is really good fun for about the first 90 levels, then it turns into a bit of a grind and a money pit (you don't have to pay out for things like blessing licences to make your game easier, but when you are only a below average skilled player like me you need all the help you can get from item mall items). But if you are just a casual gamer, it will probably fill a hole. Quite a nice community, very multi-cultural.

If you find a game, let us know. I have been looking for a while now, and finding the same problems. Maybe the developers don't realise that there are quite a number of older people out there, who tend to have MONEY, which they are happy to spend on entertainment

Of course; and it holds for everybody. When you're 20, 30 is old, man (never trust anybody over 30!). When you're 30, you realize that 30 isn't that old. 40, now 40 is *old.* At forty you start reflecting that you're not really old until you're 50...

I'm almost 48 *in two weeks*  I consider myself and older gamer since i've been playing games since i was 14 years old. Do the math. I played MMO's before their was even a MMO classification.  I've played  just about every MMO ever released. A few captured me and many others were a waste of money. With that being said i'm currently playing some silly game called Farmville on Facebook. this game has more players then WOW could ever hope to have lol ;).. Its free so thats part of it sure.

Other then that i'm not really MMO gaming. There is NOTHING of recent worth playing. I figure the next game i might even consider will be Guild Wars 2 whenever they may release it sometime in the future. I miss the memories of my prior loves and the friends i made and enjoyed these games with. Gaming or MMO gaming is not what it was 10 years ago. They have a DEAD feel to them.  Why i cant totally explain. They just feel dead. We can get those from the single player experience.

I play for the social experience. After all we've all played the basic MMO format for years. The only difference is that they made games easy mode.  At least before they had a challenge to them. They had an adventurous feel to them. Since so many modern day games have been clones of the past they feel the same and nobody wants the same in a new game, nobody!.

The future of MMO gaming is not kill tasks or even quests. The future is in the social game like i've said so many times before. Anybody can play the single player games but nothing compares to playing games or experiencing life with others especially others who enjoy the same things we all do.

So am i done with MMOs forever? I personally cant say yes or no. I can say this! I'm more demanding and before i buy again that game better have an experience to it. It better have a socially driven layout. It better encourage teamwork , socialization and community building. Games need to target AGE audiences. I love kids but that doesn't mean i want to game with them in every aspect.

To the OP yeah you may be an older more experienced gamer but there is nothing wrong with not playing until some game company gets there rears in gear to give us something we are actually interested in playing once again.

Most of the people I know are in their 40's plus and I don't know anyone who isn't playing MW2.

You need to remember us 40 / 50 year olds are the first video game generation. You all are following us. We literally started with pong and are now playing Modern Warfare and L4D.

Ditto at that.  Gamers used to be younger, but the average age has been increasing steadily these past few decades.

    FINAL FANTASY XIV

Sorry ,I haven't read all the posts although I'm fairly sure FFXIV has been mentioned.  This game will be your savior!  It'll bring those EQ feelings although it will be more solo friendly, but I have full faith in Square-Enix to pull off the miracle you're looking for!  This WILL be the game.  Make sure you don't pass it up.

The only thing I feel may throw you off is the anime-esq characters that derived from it's anime style roots.  Don't let that bother you, the game will be incredible... or at least I think and hope so.

The game looks interesting, and my entire group is planning on giving it a go, but....this game will be your savior?  Anyway, looks like an interesting system for the game, just wish there would be more pvp than FFXI has.  I don't plan on going around ganking people, but a little concern about pvp is fun sometimes.  It seems like you had to schedule a pvp in FFXI, if I understood it correctly.

Uhm, actually....no. ;)  (But I'm kind of strange maybe. Okay...take out the maybe.)

I'm 46 and I don't consider 56 to be old AT ALL. I'm to the age now, where 76 seems "old," so perhaps this is a sliding scale of measurement that expands in breadth with your years....lol.  Seems that I long ago graduated from thinking "10 years older than me is old."  I think when I was 40 it switched to 60, and then after the 45 mark...it like jumped another 10 years out.

So...if you're 30 years older than me....that seems pretty "old," because if you are 30 years my senior, you've likely married once (or twice, or maybe even more than I have...heh) had children, and probably grandchildren. I don't have any grandchildren yet, so I am guessing that at the point one of my "20-something" adult children makes me a grandmother....the age "thing" will probably jump out another 10 years and I'll then consider 80 to be "old."

The moral of this story is:

It's all relative and very subjective. And most of us "old people" were playing games before some of you were even a twinkle in Mommy and Daddy's eye. And yes...many many of us are MMO players. As a matter of fact...you've probably had your assed kicked once or twice in PvP....by an "OLD" person. lol ;)

What does age have to do with being slow anyway?  Also, it's not as if twitch based MMORPGs are something new, Asheron's Call released in 1999 had fast paced combat where players were free to dodge and generally had very involving combat which didn't involve sitting there auto attacking.  My guess is that the OP is extremely obese and this is why he's slower to react.  I've met people in their 50s who are excellent at first person shooters though.  Basically the thread is a bullshit excuse from a guy who wants to dominate via investing massive amounts of time into gaming rather than actually getting good at it.  He wants to be rewarded not for actual improvement and skill, but for wasting time learning nothing new and making no real improvements.

I suggest holding out for FF14.. Fairly sure thats going to be slower paced.

yeh, I'm also a fan of the "slower" games and i'm just 15 years though. So don't worry (yet) x]

and anyone knows when FF14 comes out in Europe?

I don’t see any problem for you; in fact I see the trend going the other way. There is less importance given to PvP now than there was. Oh they put something in, an arena or battlefield of some kind. But the idea of PvP driving a MMO is left to Darkfall. PvP will be more and more regulated in the future to ensure everyone enjoys it and MMO’s don’t lose anyone who does not like PvP.

I am not a fan of open pvp myself, regional is my preferred choice. Nor do I favour player corpse looting, but no penalty pvp deaths is where we are headed.

So don’t worry old guy, you still have a few years left in you. :)

38 year old here, and I have been playing EVE for early 4 years. Plenty of scope for older players in this game, since the kind of skills you can only acquire with life experience will serve you very well in this game. Although you will need good reflexes and situational awareness to fly, say, an Interceptor, there are plenty of PvP roles that are much slower-paced and thoughtful. And there are a great deal of things that you can do, even in null-sec space, that don't involve directly fighting much. The richest and most powerful people in EVE, without exception, do not have that status because they are great PvPers.

As you get older, your reaction time increases. This isn't a matter for debate; it's a simple, and unfortunate, fact. It actually starts when you're around 20, although it doesn't get really noticeable until later.

Looking at your avatar, that's hilarious.

I've met people in their 50s who are excellent at first person shooters though.

    1) You don't know how fast they were in their 20s. When you start with superlative reactions, you can still be pretty good in your 50s. You'll still be much slower than you were back then, though.

    2) Older people often learn to compensate for slowed reactions with accumulated knowledge and experience. You get headshot by the guy in his 50s not because he beat you to the draw but because he knew what you were going to do before you did.

Basically the thread is a bullshit excuse from a guy who wants to dominate via investing massive amounts of time into gaming rather than actually getting good at it.

Because, of course, the ability to mash a button in 0.1 seconds is the only ability that counts in gaming. Strategy, tactics, long-range planning? Pah, for wimps, all of it.

He wants to be rewarded not for actual improvement and skill, but for wasting time learning nothing new and making no real improvements.

That's how strongly I feel about FFXIV.  I might be a FF fan, but I'm 33 myself and feel somewhat similar to the OP.  I'm trying to guide the OP to the game he's looking for since it doesn't sound like he ever tried FFXI.  Even if he tried it, he must have not given it a chance because if he did he'd know how close it was to EQ style of mmorpg.  FFXIV will be the next generation mmorpg he's looking for, thus saving him from the crap that's popular now.

One big issue with current MMOs is the "communities" that they spawn. I'll admit it, I'm not overly fond of obnoxious kids and for some reason these entitled little brats think that older people should be working to support their selfish little asses and not wasting time on things like gaming.

Well, I'm 40 and I can't find a game either. EVE is by far, the best MMO on the market, but I'm sick of it. been playing on and off for years. tried SWG again..fail. their GCW update is..fail. I tried face of mankind, and OH MY GOD THE GANKING. Done with that, it's a  FFA beyond belief. I want to try STO, but it's not full grown yet. Needs to simmer in the pot a couple more months before it's really ready(although some people plunked down damn near 300 bucks for a lifetime sub, and half the PVE, the klingon half, isn't even in the game yet). I can't do another fantasy game. If I see one..more..fucking..elf, I will go postal. Gnomes too, I hate those creepy little motherfuckers. I don't want to swing the sword of awesomeness I want an MMO that a grown adult can enjoy, with pvp/pve that doesn't make me want to put an icepick through my eyesocket. Is that so much to fucking ask?..gah.!!!
