Hey guys,
I'm looking for an MMO that has other things to do than just combat.... yes I'm talking crafting and other professions. But not only things to be skilled up, just other activities that make a world feel like a world.
If you look at WoW type games, everything is centered around gearing up and fighting, it does have crafting, but it's rather pathetic. Hell even runescape feels more like a world to me.
This all being said, I'm not looking for second life or anything like that. I just want something that is immersive.
Any suggestions? f2p / browser / p2p, all welcome... I've played a lot of MMO's, but I feel that "fluff" and alternate progression is sorely missed.
Thank you!

UO, Ryzom, and Runescape.
I heard there is a truckload of different things to do in those games. Never played them myself so perhaps others could give more detail. Or just go check 'em out for yourself... Good luck
Runescape
Dissed ALOT. but..
You can fight
-be a fisherman
-be a cook
-be a wepon smith
-be a armor smith
-3 different "classes"
-be a miner
- be a runner
- rune craft
-market
Lots of jobs ^^
I'm kind of basing this thread off of my recent re-visit to runescape... I played alllll the way back in '02-'03 and just played for a few days this week.
I would just play it honestly, but with the removal of the wilderness it really took a bite out of my desire to play as I loved that part of the Original game.
I've also kind of done it all before so something fresh would be welcome.

is there anything else worth checking out in the likes of runescape?

They added alternatives to wildy just so you know.
Ryzom, Fallen earth, darkfall and EVE are the most runescape type of games ive played but wurm is also a good option. Out of all these, if you want the FFA type of pvp in wildy darkfall would be your best bet.
In my opinion, EverQuest II has the most things to do other than fighting.
There's the basics that most games have now-a-days. Crafting: 80 levels of crafting in your main profession (making spells, weapons, etc.) and 2 sub-professions (making adornments for weapons and trinkets that let you feign death or heal, etc.).
There are actually quest lines made specifically for crafters and even some instances that require you to craft things to get loot.
Alternate Advancement: Though most games have a sort of alternate advancement (talent points, feats, etc.), EQ2 lets you put a certain percentage of your combat experience into alternate advancement experience which lets you gain 200 points used to tune your character.
But EQ2 has a lot more than most games as well. Housing: Actually my favorite activity other than combat. You can rent a house (your own instance in a town) and use hundreds of unique furniture items to decorate it. You can place an item in your instance in any way (rotate it, lift it off the ground, make it bigger/smaller, etc.). Houses are used to avoid costs associated with selling items to other players and can be used for storage. Also, guilds can work together to get a Guild Hall, a giant instance to put a lot of furniture in. These have NPCs that let you sell things, craft, and teleport to other zones (among other things).
World Events: There are always events going on for new quests, unique armor and furniture for houses, and titles (as in Sir Playername, Duke Playername, etc.). There are holidays throughout the year (Valentine's day events, Halloween events, Christmas events, etc.) and lore based events (right now there is an event that offers unique rewards for the new expansion coming out in February).
Monthly Events: The 20th of every month there are 5 mushroom rings that pop up around the world. You can do these for tokens to buy furniture, illusions (change the way your character looks for a bit), and mounts. The first of every month to the 7th of every month is a City Festival that changes every month, you can get tokens here too for unique items.
Appearance Tab: Lets you wear the best looking armor (as long as your class can wear that armor type, no plate armor for mages, etc.) over your actual armor. So you look cool but still get the stat benefits from quested armor.
Self-Mentoring: You can lower your level to go back and experience lower level content. This hurts your combat experience gain a lot, but your Alternate Advancement experience stays the same so you can get points quickly.
Achievement System: A lot like World of Warcraft's. You get achievements for doing certain things in the game.
"Shiny" Collections: Glowing question marks found in nearly every zone, you can collect them to start special quests. A lot of them give special rewards and most sell for a nice price to other players.
Trophies: If you're in a guild (even a small one) you can kill raid mobs of any level in the game to get a trophy for your guild hall. The trophy is the head of the mob you killed that can be examined for some lore on that mob.
And in February there will be some game-wide PvP on PvE servers to try out.
Hope that helps. Other games have a lot of unique features and things to do as well. In all my years of MMO gaming, I would say EQ2 is the best (Age of Conan is probably the worst, still a great game but not really much to do other than fight).
UO is a very classic and very pvp...
Runescape is flash based game, not really innovative
I would offer to try out Ryzom! It was released in 2004 (before WoW), but looks still really good!
You can PvP there, but its not that often and every one can decide if he wants to participate..
But crafting and ressource gathering, also a bit "politics" are the core of the game this time. by crafting you have to find "real recipes" (for 2 whanded sword you need for example 9 fragments for blade, 8 for grip, 8 for shaft and 8 as counterweight) which materials or what loot you will put in the slots is your choice, you can mix it like you want and every mix will have an effect on the item you will craft.
There are 3 servers (german, french and english) at this time, 2 more will come in future (russian and protuguise)
there are no "PvP" or "RP" server, on each server both co-exist
Edit: Ryzom is pay 2 play. The Client is free to download (full) and you can try the game for 21 days for free (full game)
It's based on open-skill - so there is no real level, just skill-levels. you can be maxed in 2H-Sword but a noob in Elementar Magic (and level on the low level mobs with your guild-newbies or friends that are lower level than you)
If you look for a realy different MMO; that try Ryzom out ( www.ryzom.com )
