Challenge everything? If this was true, they would give us a true untouched classic shard. They are sitting on a VERY powerful game that means so much to so many. Classic Ultima online and EA Games version of Ultima online are two very different games. It would be so great to have a pay to play classic shard. I have been there and done that on free player run shards, without starting flames I will say that they are not my cup of tea.
Do you guys think that the EA Games UO developers will ever wake up?
Comments
The developers yes, they try their best, but with EA stabbing you in your back ....
I doubt I would come back even if they made it. A few years ago, probably. But not now.
The main issue with UO wasn't that progress was bad, it's that EA was very stupid and made some very ignorant decisions on how to force progress in UO. Expansions are always a good thing if they are done correctly. And there lies the fault... EA did everything as incorrectly as possible. Mirroring a world to save people from the dreaded PKer and allow people to play in peace? They should have never done it. Not because we enjoyed people running around killing everyone they saw, but because it was an idea that was going to inevitably fail. There were many many many other viable options to help protect people that would have been a thousand times better than what they did. None the less, there is no point continuing the crying about the infinite amount of dumb decisions EA has made.
The problem with a classic shard is that there will be no progress in the game. People will get bored after the nostalgia passes with the lack of new content being added. When you add in the fact that EA does nothing about cheaters or dupers, you may as well just play on a good free shard.
Ultima Online
Mystic of The Fallen Lords (Pacific 98-01)
Mystic of Catskills (03 - 08)
CHallenge everything? PFFFFFT, HAHAHAHAAHAHAH!
More like "EA games...Ruin Everything"
Case in point: Ultima Online
EA i just money -- they dont challenge anything
IMO EA does ruin stuff, such as DRM. I honestly buy EA games and get the shaft due to piracy.
Uhh... what?
To tel lthe truth i remeber playing Ultima WAy back in the days ,like Shattered lands i think was one,i played several, and at the time,i enjoyed them, but i soon moved onto better games.
I am not a nostalgic person,i like to roll with the times and move.Sure if there is nothing to challenge my at the moment favorite game,i will not move on,but i have had no problem moving on over the years, when better games came out.
HUGE game breakers for me were Unreal/Quake,Ultima,Might nMagic,,FFXI,EQ.I felt that at the time of each of these released games, the ywere big advancements in gaming ideas, they all offered somethign i had never seen before. As for the topic Ultima, what i liked about the game was the ability to pick anything up,i could go into a barn and grab a pitchfork and use it as a weapon lol,the whole world was far more interactive than many games of today.I forgot to mention Wizardry as well,it offered the first real NPC dialogue system, where you could enter anything and it would try to answer based off of keywords.
At this ppint in gaming, there is nothing left for Ultima to do,other than to close shop, move on.Mr.Koster is not even their anymore,he did have a good idea of how to make a good game, but there is nothing left for the Ultima series anymore.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Completely untrue. There is a ton of potential in the IP, and there is no reason to abandon it like it has been. I've always had this vision, where you could take all the best from Ultima and combine it with the combat style of an action RPG, as well as the quest and new player experience of modern games such as WoW or LoTRO. However, it appears that no company (even EA) realizes the untapped potential in a MMO such as this. Who made the rule that sandbox games had to be a certain way? Ultima Online was so successful because you could pick up and do just about anything. Fighting wasn't the only way to gain power. Add an inviting new player experience that Ultima lacks, and now you're not driving people away who want to try it, just like every other sandbox around (shadowbane, darkfall, and no doubt..Mortal Online) Why do sandboxes alienate the new player? Why should people have to go on the internet to find out how to do a mundane task in a video game? Show players how to do things, then take off the leash. Then you add the new player quests, you add maps, you add an auction house on top of player vendors. You keep the same skill system, update it and expand on it, and add in a Diablo 3/Titan Quest feel to combat... and there you go. Either in UO2 form, or create an entirely different world. Make PK penalties very harsh and give reasons to actually join a guild. A good guild system was lacking in UO as well. There are so many things you can expand on. Things that have been proven to work, all of these things. You can even keep the isometric, over the top view.
But.. no company has the balls to make a game like this. You can quote me if you read this.. and actually care. This first company to make a game like this will make a LOT of money. I can promise you that. Who has the guts though? My worst fears are that no on does. I call this a hybrid MMO. Merge the best of both worlds into one, to create one of, if not the most expansive and engaging worlds that you've seen since classic UO. It's a shame that no one has done it in the past 15 years. You have no idea how many times I've gone over this in my head.. and all for what? To fantasize about something that will probably never happen...Oh well, I guess I can hope. Even if it's a fools hope.
The coolest things was that I played for 5 years and still didn't see every corner of the world or do everything there was to do in UO. Why can't that happen again?
Freeshard developers are Gods while current UO developers are script kiddies.
UO developers would never dare to challenge Freeshard developers.
