This new light doesn't necessarily mean its Blizzard's fault...it just means that these hackers were pretty damn good at what they do. No system is 100% secure.

The original poster said the hackers activated a trial on their account and he didn't even get an email about it.

Since the hackers would need to deleted the trial email from his email account, this suggests his email account was hacked.  This would give the hackers access to reset his password, activate the account, delete any emails that would alert him to the hack and he would never know what was going on.

A decent hacker can be just as successful by hacking your email account as they can trying to hack your wow account.

Gotta say, I honestly doubt that.  The only thing a person would do if they got into my email is to delete WoW emails?  I can't believe that.  They would be going after my credit card / bank / etc.

naw the hacker got to my email also, less then 24 hours after I changed the password from another hacking. Hacker made the mistake of reading the email for PW change, but forgot to delete it, which is how I figured out they were in my Email. I quickly changed Email PW.

I believe the Online Forums like these been Hack.

What is there to doubt?  A wow account hacker gets access to someones email, resets your password and then deletes the emails so the user never figures out how their wow account got hacked.  It happens all the time.   They have the users login and access to the email account where the new password is sent.

The original poster would have gotten an email welcoming him to the trial or about the hacker changing his email address.  How can the absence of emails in his account be explained unless someone else removed them?

Also why would a gold farmer try to hack a bank account, let alone have the ability to do so from an email account?

The OP got suckered in by a phishing email.. Simple as that. Some are articulate and some arent. All you have to do is mouse over the links to see the ridiculously long url. The newest one is like something like worldofwarcraft - admin - battlenet.com or something or other.

I get emails all the time saying I was banned or am being investigated for " abusing the economy ".. Dont follow the links. I also havent played since before the BC expansion.

And this battlenet isnt the battlenet of old. Its a brand spanking new system and totally different from the basic one they used for Diablo and SC. Chances that they got hacked is as close to zero as it could be.

I got banned for the same thing. I've not played WoW since the free trial back in October, I think I had to switch to battlenet back then to activate the trial.

I just saw this post and tried to log into my account and was asked for some special key thing......Anyway it's WoW, it had it's day!

Hah, the whole bnet thing was a joke. I haven't played my account in years and I attempt to reactivate and it tells me its tied to another battle net account!  I guess when they switched over was a good time for stealing accounts.

And to all those people who think they know it all, I can't wait till it happens to you... Or wait did Blizz sucker you into buying the stupid little key gen device...  The fear of getting hacked is a pretty good way to get people to cough up more money.

The authenticator was created because of the vast amount of phishing emails that were going out. Even if you did fall for one the authenticator made it impossible for them to take the account. It isnt a scam.

If your account is tied to another email then Blizzard may have 1) Put the bnet account onto your registered WoW game account email ( very unlikely ) or 2 ) you tried a 10 day trial which you had to link your account and you simply forgot. A simple call or email to Blizzard would solve the issue.

Never ever ever ever follow any links in any email. 99.9% chance that it is not from Blizzard. If you are not sure simply call them or email them or type in the official url.

Rofl, people thinking this authenticator is some grand money making scheme are the ones who need to have their heads examined. They make more a day on realm transfers than they probably ever will on authenticators.

But, how much have they made off authenticators?

  • camp11111camp11111 Member Posts: 602

I have been playing WOW on and off for 5 years now. I contacted up a few friends these last weeks and on a total of around 25 something I had one - a guild leader - who was hacked once about 12 months ago.

He confessed his father used his acccount too and after a little research he found out the old man ordered some gold to get his Netherwing quest started 2 years ago. You know when 5K Gold was big money back then. They never changed their pasword and the pasword was his name ....

I looked into the history of my emails and I never had a fake Blizzard mail once these last 6 months.

So the EU situation is perhaps not the same as the US one, but I ordered my authenticator anyway (after having seen my mobile phone was not supported by the Java script).

In the end though I did not activate the authenticator.

I have my pro virus scanner, I have my daily MS updates, I never had a phising attempt and I always use the same 2 mail accounts everywhere. Junk mail gets right into the junk folder and deleted on arrival, automode.

Never had any problem. So the chance of losing that authenticator is probably higher than being hacked in my case.

It is always the end user. It is your computer, it is your property. At least take care of it.

Want a real mmorpg? Play WOW with experience turned off mode and be Pve_Pvp King at any level without a rat race.

Damn that sucks. This is why I deleted all my characters on all servers when I canceled. If someone hacks me they will have to level up fom beginning to do anything.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
