TERA Plagiarized Lineage 3

Bluehole Studios, the newly formed developers of TERA are to compensate NCSoft for the sum of 2 billion Wons(approximately 1,721,836.820 USD) for plagiarizing Lineage 3’s source code. This decision was made by the Seoul Central District Court after they found the former development director of Lineage 3 guilty. According to Bluehole, they are not satisfied with the judgement, and will lodge an appeal immediately.
It is still unknown whether this will affect the development of TERA, or the existence of Bluehole, and NCSoft have yet to make an official statement on the case.
The reason behind the case is the fact that Mr. Kang and Mr. Yo, former developers for Lineage 3, used some of the technologies copyrighted by NCSoft after the project’s cancellation, in their latest game – TERA.

In terms of Lineage 3's code disclosure lawsuit, the South Korean court has recently ruled that the 4 core developers of Lineage 3 (including the former development director) and their current employer Bluehole Studio should compensate NCsoft by 2 billion Wons.
This is the civil ruling, following the criminal one in which the core developers of Bluehole Studio were found guilty (on Jun. 26, 2009, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced the former development director of Lineage 3 - Mr. Park to a fixed-term imprisonment of one and a half years with a 2-year suspension of execution for malfeasance and disclosure of business secrets). According to Bluehole Studio, they're not satisfied with the judgement, and will lodge an appeal immediately.
On Jan. 28, the civil department of the Seoul Central District Court rendered a verdict and required the 4 involved defendants including Mr. Park to compensate NCsoft by 2 billion Wons. Meanwhile, the defendants were also ordered not to disclose NCsoft's business secrets to any others, but clear up all related data in hand.
Though at present, NCsoft wins the lawsuit no matter in the criminal judgement or in the civil one, it's still unknown if the MMORPG TERA under development by Bluehole Studio will be fatally affected.

Mr. Park, formerly in charge of Lineage 3's development, got in touch with a Japanese company in 2006 with the aim of attracting investment, and disclosed certain plans related to Lineage 3. Mr. Bae, who was responsible for other projects at that time, was also involved in this matter. Moreover, the former developers of Lineage 3 including Mr. Kang and Mr. Yoswitched over to Bluehole Studio after the cancelation of Lineage 3, and applied certain technologies originally adopted in the development of Lineage 3 in Bluehole Studio's new project - Project S1 (currently named TERA).

lol!1.7 billion $!if that company as to pay that tera will never get released nobody in their right mind would release this and accept to pay it will be cheapper to build a new game.espacially since todays game need these 3 techno to be considered massive

i do hope tho that korea stay very firm in this ruling since the offence them selves are very crippling for any game maker be it
ncsoft or any other brand name.what those guys did WAS illegal and criminal always need to be punished way more severly then just the slap on the wrist korea court gave employe.the fine is ok .its the 1.5 year in prison that is too little
since it take around 4 years to dev a game they should have been sentenced to 4 year in prison!

tera isnt worth anything for ncsoft!they would end up the way soe bacame once they baught vanguard
ncsoft is better off making sure the blue company never ever publish any title again so they dont cripple other brand the way ncsoft is being crippled by having their lineage 3 program stolen
because if blue get away with it ,it will scrap korean game making industry that is just starting to have a good reputation
and reputation in that industry is very important.
Its entirely probable that NCsoft will take control of the game in leue of payment, unless of course, they actually have the money their being fined....

Yeah hope the game still gets released and blue hole should have tried negotiating with ncsoft for the stolen codes maybe they would of gotten with less money lost but oh well we can only hope and pray for now lol.

dx11 for the bandwith(this means no tessalation!)
64 bit same thing bandwith,it wouldnt rise fps true.but it would permit you to play at higher graphic setting
microsoft donnybrook.basicly it makes you control a bot so you get very little data trough the internet.only the actual coordinate and various other info.so instead of needing to send 500 kb/s of data with donnybrook
you would probably send only 75 kb/s of data .
too bad l3 was just killed and not re started. l2 was fun for a time.

Wow this is pretty big news. Wonder what will become of Tera.
They might of been fired and to be a bastard I would of done the same too and took the code too no way I would leave the company with my work. However, they probably signed something saying that NCSoft owns everything they did. Hopefully, the appeal will go thru.
1.8 Million US isn't too bad. Even though the judge ruled agaisnt them, wonder if that will mean for them to stop the production of the game.

/nod and if they're like me.. you had to sign something before you started basically saying you wouldn't do this same thing.
those guys when they were employed signed sheet ton of them ,basicly saying what happens in ncsoft STAYS in ncsoft!
it didnt stay in ncsoft so they stole ncsoft !if they wanted to start their own firm they should have done so before going to get hired to another firm lol

You post this same thing in every forum on this site. Do you know of any games in development and scheduled for release in the next two years using any of those technologies? I'm just wondering which ones you might consider restricting your comments to.
Glad to see people get slapped for stealing someones assets, and I would guess this could be a fatal blow to TERA.

I guess TERA will never see release. It's a shame because it was looking great.

Yes they did the coding but who told them on what lineage was going to be? they were making the code for that game they werent doing this code in their free time.
They had no right on using it, all they could do was negiotiate which they didn't do so now they have to pay.

donnybrook is free too no royalty to pay aside from maybe paying ms engineer to help you implement it to your mmo

The real picture im getting from the articles is that someone at NCsoft is trying to take advantage of some people he obviously didnt get along with and fired them, but he hates them so much because they are better than him and now tries to further more destroy their lives.
Nice try at an example, but it doesn't describe the situation at hand. These fired employees used the painting that they made for me which I paid for, so its mine. Secondly, these people used my paint for something other than what I wanted it used for?
When all is said and done they most likely signed something in case something like this ever came up which it did, so those thiefs are tards.

Taking it a bit further, this is a plagerization case right? So, to use the paint analogy; the artist painted the masterpiece I wanted and then used my paint to make a reasonable copy that they intended to make money off of when I, as the actual owner of the work, should have been the one licensing copies.

even if there is no copyright because the game as not been copyrighted yet
ncoft employe are bound by secrecy on all their work in ncsoft office.be it l1,l2,guildwars you name it
you are paid by ncsoft to do the work they own.and you are bound by the sheet of paper you sign when you go in to secrecy
they didnt respect any of those so they stole ncsoft property since we re talking years of work here not days
its the reason why the number are so high.they re lucky if i wass korean court i would have asked ncsoft how much time it took to design those code then sentence the stealer to twice the time in prison.its what they deserve.
