Couple questions from potential player

LtldoggLtldogg Member UncommonPosts: 282

Hello All,

I'm looking for some basic answers from people who have played the game in beta:

  1. is this game a theme-park, sandbox, mix, etc.?
  2. are the missions/quests creative, fun and fit into the world?  or they of the typical MMO variety of kill X number of Y?  or something else?
  3. is there re-playability?
  4. how is the client performance?
  5. how is the server performance?
  6. is the game worth buying now?
  7. anything else about the game you want to say to potential players?

Thanks,

Ltldogg

Your mileage (and answers) may vary, but here's my take on your questions.

    1) Theme-park. Nearly all the content is instanced missions: Get a mission, travel to an instanced space zone or ground zone, then repeat. Because everything is instanced, there really isn't any sand-box type exploring to be done. (Though there is PvP).

    2) This answer is subjective: They did try to make a lot of references to Trek, but something felt flat about the writing to me. Kind of fan-fic'ish, but others will disagree. There are "Episode" missions which try to mix up the objectives, but there are many more missions (particularly in the first 15-20 hours of play) which are "Kill 5 Squadrons of [X Aliens]".

    3) Replayability: There are 3 character slots (by default) and 2 factions. Currently the Klingon Faction is PVP only. As for the Federation side, if you roll up an alt, you will probably be playing about 95% of the same content (similar to Champions in this respect).

    4) Client Performance seemed fine in Beta.

    5) Server Performance is currently having some issues. Beta had intermittent connectivity problems and down-times (as of last weekend), and I hear the head-start is having some woes. This will probably eventually clear up in the coming week(s).

    6) Worth buying? Clearly some people think so. As someone who was in both Closed and Open Beta, I have chosen to hold onto my money for now. The game feels only half-finished and I don't want to reward Devs for putting out a sketchy product.

    7) The game felt very repetitive to me. It is primarily combat. The space combat is kind of fun, but started to wear thin for me (for the first 10 levels, which takes a while to get through, you really only have 3 weapons to cycle through).  The ground combat is much more lacking (poor animations, laggy, limited tactical options). The "fun" doesn't really start until you hit Lt. Commander (when you get to pick your own ship), and it feels like an eternity to get there.

However, some folks enjoyed it, so more power to 'em.

I am playing it, and yet I basically agree. If you find the game enjoying is very diffcult to say. I guess for a time it is fun, like I played CO for some months and enjoyed my time. But then, I had cool friends in my guild in CO as now in STO, and often a game is made fun by the company.

It is basically like PoTBS in space, without the crafting of ships. If you like ship battle simulators, this could be fun for you.

It is definitely not a traditional MMORPG with exploration of an open world and multiple activities, like crafting, etc. There are no different starter zones, so if you roll an alt, you will do all the same missions your main character did.

Same here except I would say that the answer to #1 is it's a mix at this point. If you just follow the main mission line it's very theme park but you can break from that at any time to go and do other stuff like Patrol/exploration, Fleet/Deep space encounters or PvP which are all viable alternatives to level your character. It's no where even close to being as sand box as EVE but does have some nice sand box elements thrown in there to mix it up a little.

Themepark with no remotely sandboxy elements.

Missions and quests are redundant scripts of previous missions done, not really well written and its pretty much the ship equivalent of killing rats, without salvaging or skinning.
    is there re-playability?
If you like the redundancy of doing the same thing, with little content, over and over again.
    how is the client performance?
No problems, but occasional rubber-banding and known bugs that are eliminated when your character dies.

If you like a themepark game with no sandboxy elements and similar redundant missions of killing rats, and no game-play contribution of faction vs faction in a fvf promoted title, then perhaps.
anything else about the game you want to say to potential players?
Read all previous threads on the game...nothing much content or immersion-wise has changed.

There adding the majority of the Klingon stuff in the first patch. There are 3 different types of officers you can play as but you have to get to your first real ship to notice the difference between the two. The game is around 75% complete. You can really tell they were forced to release earlier than intended. I suggest waiting a month for the first content patch that will add everything that should have been at launch.

I don't have anything to add beyond what the others have said.. The game may be 75% complete based on what they're currently saying they'll have at release but in my opinion its very much lacking in being a complete game that people should pay for. This is another pretty good example of forcing a game out by a certain date regardless of "polish".

My advice is give STO until mid/late summer before considering buying it.

the first major patch should fill in the last 25% if what they say is true.

Well I do like this game(I did also like CO but canceled it after 2 months), missions are fun,at least when you are new to the game I dont know if this game has the potential to keep players. At least you wont get missions asking you to go collect 375 wolf pelt:-)

Just get the game if you are interested and play for 1 month that you get from buying game and then considder if you want to continue playing, there is no way other people can tell you if you are going to like the game or not.

    Wish you happy gaming:-)
