How is this game for casuals?

Armisael191Armisael191 Member Posts: 162

Will casual players ever hope to become skilled enough as someone who has been playing the day since day 1? And by skilled I mean their character skills. I've heard that the game is sort of like EVE in the sense that someone who plays more than you will always have a character higher skilled than you and you'll never be able to reach them, is there no cap on skill levels?

Also, does this require massive amount of play time to get anywhere or to be able to compete in sieges, competitive fighting, etc?

You have to define casual since one person's "casual" is another person's hardcore. I'll assume you mean play a couple hours a night, say 4-5 nights a week.

A casual player will be behind the curve for a long time. You won't ever really catch up to hardcore vets unless you manage to train everything to max, which would take a long, long time.

I consider myself to be a casual player of DFO. I fit the definition I gave earlier. I was able to take part in city defense and group PvP early on once I joined a clan. 1v1 is a different story. I still get rolled by vets, but that doesn't bother me. In group PvP, I don't rush headlong into the melee combat because that's suicide. I keep range between me and the attackers and use magic/arrows whenever I can. I also do support roles like healing, buffing and scouting.

So in summary, it's possible to play DFO casually and have fun as long your idea of fun is not just pwning all 1v1.

Well, DF has a lvl cap of 100 so eventually you will get there....................but it will take time

So the more you play the quicker you ll get there.

I would say that if you want to be competitive in a 1v1 PvP fight then this game is not really casual friendly.

But in DF you can play PvP in group and in sieges, in which case you don't need to have everything maxed.

So if you are after the 1v1 uberness, maybe this game is not for you, but if you are a social person and like go out in group and take part in sieges than this game can be for you.

As much as I love the game, I have to say it's not really for casual players.

Unless you want to be a crafter, and just make your own way in the world. Then I don't see why not.

But if your main focus for the game is PVP, a casual player is going to meet with frustration.

This is true for all mmo's if you are speaking a character to character base, most games lately though aren't pvp so they allow more characters per server.  But as I understand DF you train skills by using them and it is open ended so whatever you wanted to do you can do without class restrictions.  If that's the case I'd say you'll be fine as long as you don't need to keep up with the Jones'.  If pvp is your thing I don't know if I'd chose DF, better off with some cookie cutter theme park that does pvp well maybe AOC.

Overall though with it's lack of pve I would say DF as a whole probably doesn't cater to a casual player at this time but again there are so many factors to consider if I were you I'd at least try it.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

you need to play 4-5 hours a night most nights and sometimes more for sieges and other longer content.  If not you will never catch up in any way and remain at the bottom of the food chain.  You can join a clan and take part in sieges easy enough, but you ill contribute next to nothing and again will require a lot of time to prep, travel to location, setup, fight etc.

Wrong. Have you played the game, or are you trolling? I'd go into detail as to how a casual can contribute in a war, but I doubt you even care.

    Yes and no.

You will be able to get a low level pvp char if you play hardcore for 3 months. That`s 5+ hour a day. After a year of semi-hardcore playing, you`ll get a medium pvp char (I got one of those). I don`t think you`ll be able to get a developed after AV fixed the bugged mobs and the banning of macroers. So yes, you`ll never be able to catch up.

You can take part in sieges and shipbattles as a meatshield though. Those things only last a few hours and happens twice a month.

It`s sad to see that players like you wont be able to participate in the best mmo for years. Trust me, Darkfall is an amazing game for the selected few. Those few times we have large battles in Darkfall, it`s even better than my time in UO. Sadly we are to few high level players in Darkfall because of the grind, so those special moments are very rare.

Dont listen to anyone in this thread. Try the game out, if you can cope with getting facerolled a bit, and dont mind about losing pixels, this game is the best thing out there.

Try it, dont listen to others opinion.

Why should he listen to yours?

He didn't ask if the game is the most amazing thing in the entire universe, he is asking if it is casual friendly.

Most of us are trying to give some kind of comprehensive feedback about the topic, so hopefully it will help him out not wasting some money.

If he didn't care about paying 50 quids, he wouldn't have asked for advice and would have bought the game, you genious.

Nothing currently, was looking for something new.

These posts gave me good reason to look past Darkfall, even if it is a good game. I don't have time to play it hardcore.

Good luck finding your next game. It's a pain when nothing out there looks appealing.
