My MB has a built in sound chip and now thinking of upgrading it, I was thinking of buying Sound Blaster Audigy sound card. From reviews it's a good card, but I understand Norton doesn't like it.
can I get away with using MB built in sound chip or any beta-testers had probs with sound.
Strange Q, I know , but I'm poor after buying collector's edition and I want to hear the 110 hours of voice over in all Surround Sound glory.

Avoid using onboard sound cards. Get a soundblaster live! or better and im sure you will be fine.
(dont forget to disable onboard soundcard after installing the soundblaster one.. if your mainboard has sound on it i mean)

Hmm. I've got an Audigy 2 and have had no problems with Norton (had AV 2002 and recently upgraded to NIS 2005).
Symantec (Norton) had several problems with auto-protect being disabled after startup, and some installed software seemed to make this problem more frequent, but not the hardware or drivers themselves.
So, I can only suggest you try the game with your onboard sound, and if you're dissatisfied, go ahead and upgrade. A conflict with Norton shouldn't influence your decision, however. :-)
I have recently bought an audigy 2 zs card, and am very impressed with it.
- very good dynamic range
- internal midi synthesizer
- asio drivers for multitrack recordings / playbacks
- eax 4.0 ... cant really hear the difference but name sounds nice ... also appears in EQ2 sound-menu as highest option, so i guess that's good
- low processor usage
If you hvae an nforce 2 chipset the on board sound is actually excellent. In fact it is one of the only sound cards that does dolby decoding on the fly so no extra box is required to decode your surround sound. Other than that I would recommend that you get an add on sound card.
I'm no audiophile. I can never make out the subtle differences between various cards. As such, I have always used onboard sound and never worried much about sound cards. (although I will with my next comp as I want to move up to 5.1 surround)
I played beta and I found the sound to be very nice. Music and sound effects are all rich and well done.
