space combat specifically. I mean, easy as in 'leave autofire on, get a sandwich, come back to collect loot' easy. I understand the first few levels usually are easy as a learning curve, but ... honestly, without challenge there is no fun. I'm right now past level 10 (out of 45) and the hull in my ship has never gone below 98% in episode missions. (Fleet combat is different, as it's made for groups).
The space combat system is complex enough so, if it actually provided some challenge, would be so much fun. You have different ships, with different weapon layouts, different bridge officers with different abilities, plus you have shields and orientation and what not. Only nothing of this matters since you can beat all missions (so far) in auto-fire. Wasted opportunity here.

Try doing the level 16-18 romulan missions. I thought the same as you until I got up there.
I steam-rolled to level 11 on day one. In fact up to level 14/15 is pretty easy if you do those explore missions but then it gets harder, faster.

I hope this is so. A know we have to make things easy for some people at early levels, but don't make it a complete easy ride all the way to top level.

Are you sure it's not just the Romulans that are the exception? Knowing their track, I wouldn't be surprised if they're considering Romulans bugged and probably nerfing them soon.
But still, ok have it 'easy' for new players, first, this should be up to about level 5 if that, not 15! and second, one thing is having it 'easy' and another thing is having it 'trivial'. This is not exponential leveling like in other MMOs. 15 levels is actually 33% of the game right there (some people are reporting leveling after 10 is actually faster than before 10)
1-11 is an intro basically, come back when your 45 and we'll listen....maybe.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy

Well their 'easy mode' tweak they put in during beta made the whole game a cake walk and a lot of people went on the war path over it. They only did it because they were getting a whole lot of lower level players that were complaining the game was too difficult before the tweak. To remedy this and strike a balance between the two groups they compromised. They retweaked the game but only for levels 11-45. They figured this way they still had the 'easy mode' for new players and the more challenging game for the more experienced players. So yeah... levels 1-10 are extremely easy but from 11 on up they start to get a whole lot more challenging.

Ya and hunting boars near Goldshire was easy to. Why dont you play past the tutorials and get some levels under your belt before saying how easy it is.
I swear these sort of posts must come from a giant clipboard of MMO comments - I see them that often. Not that there isn't a matching one for critics of MMOs.
Why should anyone have to go to max level to find fun in a game?
If you want to hold players, the game has to be fun - right from the start.

I agree... They should turn the difficulty up a little more for levels 1-10.... Just not quite as high as it was before they nerfed it. This would still make the game challenging without having newbie ships blowing up every 5 minutes like it was before the nerf for some people.

Perhaps you were just exaggerating, but in most fights, I'd probably bite the dust if I "hit autofire, went and got a sammich", etc.
For one thing, there IS no autofire. Particularly in space. Closest thing is, you can spam the space bar, but that's not a toggle. You have to keep tapping it. And while there used to be an autofire on the ground, it's been removed. The official forums make this clear.
As far as the basic premise goes, that it's pretty easy, this is true. But certainly not in that manner that you can walk away during the fight, something you CAN do in even respectable games like Eve, and at all skill levels, I might add.
If you read the "Adventures of Jeannie" blog on this site, the author points out that a total noob played WoW for the first time, who never played MMO's before and was unaware of the action bar and skills. In short, they defeated monsters the whole time he watched them play, by clicking on them, ie, with autoattack.
My experience was, particularly with boss battles, that if I didn't maneuver my ship, recharge my shields, rebalance them, etc, there was a possibility that I'd lose. Not a particularly big one, but significant. And that chance went WAY up as I found myself hitting 15+ where you have to target and blow enemy torps before they hit you, and you have to brace for impact or you'll lose half your crew, etc. To me, this was well inline with level 20-ish gameplay in most 60 level games.
My co worker is playing and says that can get hard at mid levels. I may actually break down a buy the game on Tuesday.

There is an autofire in space, right click on the weapon and it's autofired (can only autofire one weapon front and one rear). I wasn't kidding, I was fighting a battle and saw my shield hardly depleting from 3 enemies, so I tested it. I parked my ship, full stop. Left it there and watched the battle, and remember only 2 weapons out of 3 were autofiring. Only pressed a button two times: TAB to select next mob after the previous one died. Autofire won... My hull at the end was 99%, shield 45%. That's how easy it is.
I'm level 11 now and still haven't seen the difficulty. I'll play some more tonight and will report back.
You will be happy to know there is, in fact, an auto-fire. At the right of your ship shield display, you have your weapon display and you can right click them to set them on auto-fire but I think you can only set the phaser/disruptor on it.
I sure was happy when I found out. My thumb was numb..

I decided against pre-ordering and buying for now. The game is allright enough, but right now I have Mass Effect 2 to keep me busy, and Cryptics unability to even adress the autofire issue and give the community an answer, even if it was just "works as intended, not gonna change" annoyed me.
(Autofire issue is that on larger vessels, and espesially escorts with cannons, you need to smack space bar (or the weapon hotkeys) all the time to fire your weapons. You can only have 1 fore and 1 aft weapon on autofire. Cannons for escorts recycle every 2 seconds, which means you need to smack the spacebar all the time. You should be able to set one fore autofire per tactical officer, or at least just make pressing and holding spacebar fire all weapons, instead of needing to hit it every. bloody. time.)
That seems to match up with your experience(only 2 weapons firing), so it is working to an extent, just not well for certain configurations, particularly those like me that love the escort ships. I haven't been able to right-click to autofire since the head start, and incorrectly assumed they removed it, and that was the issue people were complaining about. So I'll man up and admit I was wr-wr-wr...wr... . Something in my UI config must be amiss.
Level 11 being easy makes sense because you're moving on to your next bigger, better ship. Seeing as how everybody gets a new ship at lvl 11 though, that should be taken into consideration when determining difficulty. I still think 1-10 should be pretty easy, but agree that 11-15 could use a boost. Heavy quantum torpedos from enemies 15+ certainly take away the "walk away and get a sammich" aspect, though. One ignored salvo from 3 ships took me from full to about 50% hull in OB.
I set auto fire on, went to the kitchen, baked a cake and when i come back i was admiral.

Thanks, LeKink! Yeah, I could set autofire in beta, but for some reason, I can't, in headstart. Nothing happens when I right click, ctrl-click... I've tried it all. I'm pretty sure the actions are in my main bar, too. Not sure what's messed up, but I can't get autofire working on the ground or in space.
Well then it sounds like the devs once again listened to the customers because having an auto-fire was something that people were saying in BETA that was needed.

lmao. just like mmo players. Complain to get auto-fire added, then bitch that the game is too easy....
auto fire doesn't make the game easy mode. They nerfed the mobs in the level 1-11 bracket just a tad too much.
I am all for the first 2 or 3 levels or so to be easy, so people can get into the game. But after that it really needs to get a bit more challenging progressively wise.
Now people breeze through the first 11 levels or so and then hit a big concrete wall and get frustrated from the sudden change in difficulty.
It seems Cryptic really doesn't know how to balance their games. They screwed up royally with CO at launch with that patch. And now they do it again. /sigh
It's always one extreme to the other extreme with Cryptic and their balance attempts.

The controls leave a lot to be desired. You end up with a LOT of gun emplacements in a higher tier ship and only two of them can be set to auto fire. As others have said - there is a ton of spacebar spamming. When I say I played space games with better controls 10 and 20 years ago, I am not exaggerating.
1 - Tab-targeting needs a range setting - when my weapons have a 10-km range, I don't want to be selecting enemies 2-30 km away.
2 - Info displays are lacking. It is too hard to judge an enemy's bearing and heading.
3 - There should be a seting to match a friendly ship's course and speed - well there is /follow, but that doesn't do the whole job.
All of these issues should be easily fixed, and I think at least some of them will be. I'd also like there to be more energy presets available.

True to an extent, but pleasing one group won't automatically please another group. Not all players want the same thing.

The game is so easy that a guy have recorded videos when he is AFK-ing the game and still not dying once. He just moves his char from room to room and let his crewmen do the job.
Hes playing X-box while leveling in STO. Check STO forum for the vids.
Walk from a to b, wait till room is empty, repeat. Haha, omg...
Yup. I have done that in beta.
MMOs have now moved from solo-friendly to AFK-friendly.

Also, the problem here really isn't that people complained there was no auto-fire...the problem is that complaining about auto-fire makes sense in the context of the game. The design is that without it you have to constantly click the same ability over and over and over. That's just silly, imho.
