I guess the developers forgot to tell people the reason they say their combat is superior to other games is because its sort of semi turned based combat. No you don't swing then wait for the next guy to swing but what there is, is a delay in the combat system. So you swing the other guy see's you swinging or about to and he blocks. It makes for a more realistic Fight like RL. Accept most people will hate that. yes in RL you can sort of tell and block a swing where game's you can't.
But then again that's why we play video games.
So again this game is not action FPS like Darkfall or most games its what I call semi turned based MMORPG.
Sorry if many of you did not know this and smaller weapons will swing faster but you will always have that delay. Basically it feels like a FPS shooter at say 500ms ping..
That is Mortal Online it's a crafting and combat simulation sandbox not a action fps game like darkfall.

I said it in the other thread and Il say this again: simply horrible design.
And some people from beta actualy proclaimed it has better melee combat than DF? DF mops the floor with this in terms of melee, archery (by far) and MOs magic is almost non existant and used with TAB key.
they screwed it up badly IMO, I at least had hoped the melee would be in good shape Mount and Blade like...first person and all.
Sooo... how fast is blocking/parrying then? Delay as well or faster..? If its faster then a 1v1 might turn out like fencing for a while
I mean your in a fight you know the guys wacking on you.. You don't need to know how the block the shot for every swing he does.. Man this game is like swing at eachother till your out of stamina and then someone else comes by and kills both of them.
It makes no sense why they ruined the combat system I never knew this all this time I never did combat I just explored and tradeskills.

I have been trying to tell you guys. The game looks amazing yet its not fun.
Yeah, just gave the game a go myself and I have to say that I am glad I did not buy it.
Everything seems so clunky. The UI is slow temperamental. Combat is not fast paced but snail like.
In my 30mins of play time I have found numerous things that just turn me off!
HAHAHA, yeah it is turn based I guess. Try hitting somebody and waiting 30 seconds to find out if there was a hit.

Combat with a starter axe (beta gathering tool) is slow, and lag can cause a hit to register after you actually hit.

Lots of people have tryed to tell you guys..including me..MO is not ready for closed bets and its already in open beta..combat sucks among almost everything else..its basic unfinished buggy stuff.

This link seems to have been made two years ago and states this. I'm not a follower of this games development but if you guys were (not saying you claim to be) then you prolly would have seen this. Have you even played the beta pre open beta where the servers were actually stable and lag free.
You are free to attack and swing you weapon whenever you want, Every weapon, depending on what it is made off, your stats and stamina. Will attack at a different speed. There is nothing stopping you from holding down your swing so that you can time your attack.

wow just the other day i was swinging with no delay unless i held the swing. starter axe was diffreant.

WARNING: OP is completely wrong.
The '2-3 second delay' is a result of trying to attack with the newb Starter Axe, which is given to allow beta players to get access to mining/lumberjacking quickly. As a result, it is a horrible weapon, and the slowest in the game. Any real weapon would have no such delay.
I've seen inaccurate 'reviews' of a game, but this one tops them all. Turn based, LOL. By OP's logic, Halo is turn-based because it takes a long time to re-load the rocket launcher.

He is not completely wrong. In my experience, and this is before open beta so there was no lag issues, I had a fricking conversation with a guy as he was killing me. I was a complete newb wandering around with nothing but my starter axe, he was fully decked out and it took him at least a minute to kill me. In DFO, i would have been dead before I could even turn around to see his face, and i personally find this much more exhilarating.
That's because in DF you can spam attack and there is a significant skill gap between newbies and vets. In Mo, you can't spam your weapon attacks and be guaranteed a win vs a newbie. Also gear doesn't = skill and his weapon prolly wasnt that good.

I'm looking at the bigger picture here. I understand that there will always be and should always be veteran newbie gap. I understand my place in the food chain. If i just logged into a game with 10 minutes of playing time I expect to be hammered, because i have this mentality I don't go freaking out about being pk'ed. I guess its a matter of preference, but I like the idea of constantly looking over my shoulder for that PK who I KNOW will destroy me before i get two steps in. It adds a level of player driven depth to the game.
Now, I can't say I am an experienced MO player thus far. I have logged in some time, have become frustrated, quit, logged back in, quit, ect. I just think the combat is waaay to mechanical. I understand that they are trying to level the playing field, but that is a very involved task. I mean if you look at world of warcraft they have been trying to balance their button pushing mechanics since day one and they still dont have it right. Now you add it FPS hack n slash and you want to make sure combat is balanced juuuusttt right? Well that is how you end up with unrealistic combat mechanisms. You tweak and tweak to make sure things seem balanced but now you have something that looks completely awkward. I don't know I'm just an idiot. /rant .

How many MMO's have you played? Try swining a halberd or hammer in UO as compared to a kryss.
maybe they added the delay to stop people naked zerging with starter gear?
so to have a better fight you need to invest in gear otherwise your gonna get your rump handed to you with your starter axe

OR if you do not understand that you need to hold the mouse button to charge you blow. Its not just hack n slash or any old olympics game that you need to push the button 468 times a minute (if you do not go for daggers, then it might work =P).
It's no semi-turn combat, it is to plan you attack. Pretty realistic imo. How fast do you think you could swing a 2 meter 2-hand sword? I think you need to charge it a bit before swinging? Dont ya? ;o)

Larger weapons have longer swing times... this would be accounted for in the animation I would hope. Daggers swing fast... 2-handers have a longer swing animation. The issue people are describing is nto the length of the animation.. it's hitting the button and counting 1 mississippi... 2.mississippi.. THEN the animation begins.
This looks like lag but is not as people have complained about it way before the Open Beta. Instead of making the player stand there doing nothing while "charging" the weapon they should just make the animations longer or shorter to reflect the various swing times.
Your example of a 2 meter 2 hand-sword doesnt make sense. Are you saying that you would hold the sword and mentally prepare to swing it for 2 seconds.. mentally charging it to swing? Thats not how physics works. You would start to swing the sword and it would start slowly and then gather momentum as it gets further into it's arc....
Noob axe.. dagger.. or sword... all should START swinging when I hit the button. It should take them various times to FINISH the swing...
