Am I correct that it seems they want us to buy the game before we can have access to open beta? TBH i just wanna see if the game is as bad as I keep hearing it is on these forums.. Not willing to spend money to do so.

open beta is free. they are just offering a discount if you preorder during open beta.
No you are not correct.
You need to create a game account and then use that account to login to the game:
account.mortalonline.com/
click that link, make an account, wait for a bit and try to login. The server may or not be down.
