Those that have had a chance to play, please be honest. I'm a former SWG vet(I've been wandering from various MMO's ever since)...I really want to find a game that I can call home for a couple years. A few questions...
1. How is the overall gameplay...smooth?
2. Is this game themeparkish?....*cough, like WoW and others...
3. Overall opinion of STO longevity....does it seem like a 6 month temporary MMO(skeleton with little meat?).
4. How is the crafting? bland or engaging(like experimentation, etc.)
Thanks

well firstly there really is no crafting, argue all you want you need phaser arrey 1 then a whole bunch of other parts to make it a phaser arrey 1 of uncommon value with little better stats. So really if you don't have the item to begin with your not making it. The play is skilled base so no two chars will ever be alike, now as a whole it's cyptic so wait til tomorrow to see if they do something stupid and make the game unplayable. Right now the change in drop rates is getting a lot of flack, out side of fleet mission rewards item drops for your ship is pretty spars. By that I mean in 13 lvls I've had three weapons and 2 consols drop that didn't drop in fleet missions. While in beta I had way way more, this has lead to a price hike on the exchange, the games AH which ironically is stupid as no one has things to sell to make the money to buy the stuff on the ah.
If you liked the old consol Star Trek Games you will most likely like STO as it plays exactly like them some people say it is to easy, that without a death penalty it's not fun. Now these people are the ones for the most part that are siting back while the bulk of other players do the dieing in fleet missions and enemy space contacts. If your drawing a lot of agro your going to die quick, and sheilds bleed through so even going tank and focusing on keeping your shields up means you can die. I've bought it with my shields on all sides at half way or max cause of bleed through. While everyone else in the party was enjoying me getting the agro from my ships dps.
Drops go off of a dps table best I can tell, while you may be the first to hit an enemy ship if you don't do the most dmg then your probably sol on getting the drop, which as already said is usually a battery and not an item.
For the first 10 levels the game auto groups you with other people doing that mission, then after that your on your own. I guess they figure you shoulda made friends by now to not need that function. As for immersion, the game has a lot of the Star Trek feel but it needs a name filter for ships and players.
Over all I'd rate the crafting at a 3, player immersion at a 2; I should never see the U.S.S Idophatchix as a starfleet vessel EVER! Game immersion is about a 7, they really used the lore well. Gameplay is bettwen 6- 8; it's rather smooth and with time you can make the ships dance, but it can make you want to commit mass murder at times. PVP gets an 8, tatics work and the pvp plays just like the pve, if your smart you can always win. If your team is stupid you will die. Graphis are about 6.5 maybe 7. At max setting it reminds me of freelancer with better graphics. Community wise I'd say 5, if that some people are good but most are the standard fare of mmo players today, and with the one server system you can't escape them.
As to longevity you can get to captain in less than a week of hard playing, and admiral should be about two weeks more. So you can guess there, with only three classes and at three weeks a class your looking best guess less than six months to max out all three classes in both factions.
Even though I never thought it would be possible, STO is even more of a themepark than World of Warcraft. You know how you can wander around pretty much everywhere in World of Warcraft? You can't do that at all in STO. Want to visit Earth? Too bad, you have to stay in your ship.
This is kind of ironic since City of Heroes was designed to have every single part of the city be explorable. It's as if Cryptic's games a devolving.
Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.
No surprise, as creativity decreases as greed becomes more the raison d'etre of a company.
Time after time, we see young companies full of imaginative and eager people lose their way as profits become more and more of the focus.

1. Yeah the gameplay is pretty smooth, Both ground and space combat flows pretty good. However 99% of things you do is about combat so dont expect much else. However, I am playing now for the third day straight and the game is still fun.
2. Yes, very much so. I would say that this game is more themeparkish than WoW because WoW does have multiple starting points and, once you hit level 10 or so, you can pursue several leveling paths. STO has pretty much only one PvE leveling path and that is the Feds and since killing random mobs, if you can find them, is not really worthwhile then the leveling path is straight like an arrow.
Also the Klingon faction is pretty much unplayable, they got basically one or two repeteadable PvE missions, TOTAL, and then a bunch of PvP instanced battlegrounds so I would say that the Klingon faction is currently incomplete.
3. From what I have seen so far? No. There is no content beside different variations of instanced missions and instanced PvE battlegrounds (there is also fleet actions but that is basically just a large instanced mission). If they dont add more content, such as persistent open world PvP, or end-game raid content (that is not just another instanced PvE mission variant) I doubt the game will last longer than a couple of months, if even that.
4. There is no crafting. Not unless you consider handing in loot for an NPC to transform it to an item as crafting. There are no crafting skills or anything like that (as far as I can tell).
My gaming blog
1. How is the overall gameplay...smooth?
I am enjoying the game. There is instancing, but it blends well in my opinion. The graphics are really nice. To me it is immersive and it feels like Star Trek.
2. Is this game themeparkish?....*cough, like WoW and others...
I don't know what that means.
3. Overall opinion of STO longevity....does it seem like a 6 month temporary MMO(skeleton with little meat?).
Loads of people are in the game. There is an auto-group feature which helps to get through the tougher battles. I purchased a lifetime sub.
4. How is the crafting? bland or engaging(like experimentation, etc.)
I don't know yet.
3) This game wont go past 1 month for the majority of people who try it, most will quit before they have to to start to pay the monthly sub. It lacks end game, has far too much repetability and as you can see from many posts here and other gaming forums it lacks substance which means no longevity. Dont be fooled by fanboi's, you would likely enjoy STO for a week or 2 then get bored very fast as most people will. If you are smart wait 1 month and see what its like then
I only played the open beta, I won't be subscribing.
The game is very similar to PoTBS, basically a small scale ship battle simulator.
There is no open world exploring, no crafting, and no other activities besides combat. There is ship combat, and ground combat. As in PoTBS, the ground combat is fairly primitive, and the ship combat can be a lot of fun.
There is really only one path to advancement, so if you make an alt, you will do the same content as the first character did. There are no different starting areas. There are only 2 slots for characters, 3 once you open the Klingons.

2024: 47 years on the Net.
4 words...... Guild Wars in Space.... Already canceled my pre-order.... Too linear. All you do is fight, there is no crafting, the explorations seem is pretty bland and boring, There are no real resources. The type of class you choose seems to only affect ground skills.
Pretty much this game turned out the complete opposite of what you think a space themed game would... No sandbox feel, Non-Existant Crafting system. No career options other than combat.
When you play you feel like your are in a boxed in Space should feel Open.
Played a lot in CB...Tried like hell to like the Game...But after the 1st few trips in it became a massive bore-fest for Me personally...I decided not to Sub...WAY too much REAL boring Space Combat for me (though I do admit it's a bit more fun with a Group of Guildies). In My Guild it was about 50/50 between those who were in Beta and Subbed and those who were in Beta and decided not to...
I think the Game has potential but the too-fast launch, one Server, and lack of exploration is really going to hurt it's chances long-term. You only get a small window of a chance in MMO Land to build a strong Sub Base...I see this Game as one of those in which many Folks Sub for 30-120 days, then they are gone for good...
Just My opinion...I wish everyone the best on STO...
I don't think STO will make you happy, because you're still blinded by what MMO's should be, instead of accepting what MMO's are. STO won't last you or probably any sane person for two years, nor would most modern MMO's. Even the best parts of WoW can be completed in less than 6 months. However, STO is a fun game for a little while, and for me that's all that matters.
1. I wouldn't say the gameplay is smooth, because the NPC's on the ground do glitch, but nothing game breaking. There's also rubberbanding and lag problems sometimes. Space combat is smooth.
2. STO is a game, with content. Depending on your mindset, will depend whether or not it seems like a themepark. When I play STO, I feel like a Starfleet Officer. They give me orders, and I complete them. I'm happy with that, and think it has to be like that. After all, if you're in the military, it's natural to be given orders and have to complete them.
3. I think STO will survive just fine, if that's what you're asking. If you're asking how long will the content last, probably no more than any other modern game: 3-6 months.
4. What crafting? I haven't seen any crafting yet, but that doesn't mean there isn't any.
Finally, if you're looking for a fun game, that'll give you your money's worth, in my opinion STO will do that. If you're looking for a "second home," which I read as "a place to replace most of my real life (like SWG)," then STO won't satisfy you.
The game is too easy. In space combat you have all sorts of abilities, weapons, ships, items... but in the end nothing matters. Just set your ship on autofire and go grab a sandwich. The only challenge comes in PvP.
As it stands now I don't recommend it. They mention they might add a difficulty setting in the future. Maybe when they do add it, it'll make episode mission combats fun. Right now they're a snorefest.

in #2 you say that STO has to make you feel like a starfleet officer? I watch almost all the st series.. Yes it is about starfleet but! Is everyone they encounter a part of a military??? Wheres is the Trading side, Crafting goods to sell to other players...? Setting up a bar in a starbase for players to come hang out and buy drinks and play games, Or perhaps finding a planet with random resources that you setup a mining colony and maintain it and gain "Profit"???? Its non-existant.. Because they chose to make the game very very shallow....
It's super fun, pretty smooth, and I'd say more themeparkish than sandbox.

Should probably add that despite the answers not really seeming that appealing to myself, I have enjoyed the game very much up until now and if they weren't adding an item shop I would be subbing (in fact if there are no items in the item shop when the free month is up I will be).

There's plenty of examples of books, movies, and other games that focus on one aspect of something. Star Trek, if analyzed, would reveal a universe of things that are happening. However, a person could also focus on one aspect of Star Trek when writing, creating movies, TV series, and games. STO focuses on what it's like to be a Starfleet Officer, not what it's like to be a colonist, a barkeep, or something else. Neither way is the "wrong" way to create a game. What STO did was create a game, not an all encompassing Star Trek simulation. What Cryptic did with STO, is the same thing LA did with their Star Wars games that focused on being a clone, or as a pilot, or as a Jedi. It's just one aspect of the IP. I find The Federation an interesting entity, so I am having fun playing a game that's about being a Starfleet Officer.
Either way, Most of those games you refer too are not mmorpgs that charge 15$ for a sub... they are one time pay games... Any successful ones give you options..
Sorry to be a dick but you posted this and you could have read the plethora of reviews and comments on these forums for the information?

In any case you are correct, if your intent is to make a shallow one dimension game that will become boring to most players quickly
MMOs tend to not do well when the game design is as shallow and one dimension as STO is...
Why pay monthly to play a shooter style game that you can do with other games via multiplayer... 6-8 people or something for free.
Sorry just trying to save you folks 50$

Its prety sad really the size of the worlds in MMOs coming out these days..The MMO I'm playing now puts them all to shame imo. Themepark, small world, MMOs are dead as far as I'm conserned. I'll never return to them.

Smooth

Theme Park, if your looking for the open feeel of SWG, this won't appeal to you.
3. Overall opinion of STO longevity....does it seem like a 6 month temporary MMO(skeleton with little meat?).
The million dollar question lol! I have enough confidence in it to do so that I bought the Lifetime Subscribtion. It is refreshing in that it has things most other MMo's based in fantasy don't, such as trainable NPC Bridge Officiers and futuristic combat in space. I would like to see more open exploration type missions as the ones in the game, although fun lack depth and freedom. There are missions with no combat, but that isn't the norm (at least by my experience). Much of the end game depends on how fun the PvP is and what effects that has on the game world in general.
4. How is the crafting? bland or engaging(like experimentation, etc.)
What is called crafting I call collecting. You collect samples in missions, then buy an additional item to turn in for a better item. This is an area lacking in my view.
Thanks
i'm a Star Trek fan and i think Cryptic did a good job with the story line it doesn't feel made up like a remake / reboot ..more like a good continuation of the prime universe movies and tv series i think the game is fun so far and i'm going to give it a good chance...
