Anybody else feel weird passing on an mmo launch?
I just feel a bit left out, even though I know that STO is not a game that I would enjoy since it is so far off from what I think a ST mmo should be.
I can only think of a couple of mmo's I have passed on at release... D&L, and CO are really the only ones that come to mind...
*sigh*
Good luck to those playing, I hope you have fun!

Not at all. Learned the hard way several big launches ago. Publishers just don't treat their customer base honestly or good enough to participate in a launch. Its a total cash-grab, crap shoot, with there apparently being a lot more crap and a lot more grab each new launch.
Now I wait for a post launch free trial.
Would I 6 or 7 years ago hell yeah, but to be honest WoW has spoiled me. I want a polished content complete game at launch.
Is it to much to ask, yeah probably. But it is what it is.
Why did you have to say that?
Now we will get about a dozen posts telling us (in detail - some with bullet points) how WoW had launch problems too.
Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
I do a little bit. Though i have learned my lesson on previous launches, i just have a bit too much going on right now to do any MMO gaming. I might check it out during the summer with a free trial or something, i found the beta to be somewhat entertaining, it's probably better with a guild.
I passed on WAR, CO, STO so far, and I will pass on MO.
I bought every other major MMO since UO................even Vanguard
Nope.
Played enough of it to know it isn't for me or the quality I expect out of an mmo. More or less felt the same way when I tried out CO and after seeing what has transpired in that game I've only felt all the better from staying the hell away from subbing to that game.
I see nothing about this company that gives me any confidence that they will provide any meaningful support or content to their games. They just seem to be pushing for a burst in initial sales and subs rather than putting any effort into retention or community growth.
...or creating an environment with any lasting appeal whatsoever.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Heh, precisely.
I wonder if this will come back to bite a few companies in the ass. Prior to 2009 I participated in just about every AAA mmo launch release since Anarchy Online. Last year, marketing betas saved me from purchasing Champions and saved my wife from purchasing Aion. So far this year I've been saved from STO.
While I lament the loss of actual testing that used to occur in betas, I'm actually pretty thankful to these companies for saving me some disappointment. Keep it up.
...
I passed on this one too. Haven't passed on many over the years.
There's a niche within the MMO market now: jaded gamers.
And I don't think the MMO companies give 2 sh*ts when they know that those jaded gamers are NOT the majority. Not even 10%. I'm talking about the people that sit in the pub theorizing over why they think MMO's aren't satisfying them anymore.
I don't have to theorize. I know I'm not jaded. I know I'm just bored by the fact that most all MMO's coming out nowadays are designed for people with A.D.D. and a 20 IQ who don't want to do jack sh*t but have their hand held for 15 bucks a month while they follow the pre-planned path that if they have an IQ of higher than 50, they'll figure out and get bored of very quickly. That's why I'm bored.
Newsflash: Sandboxes are not friendly to the moronic lazy masses! Same reason why people go to mcdonalds instead of going grocery shopping and cooking healthy food them self! In an era of unlimited information, we live among one of the dumbest unmotivated societies. You can bet your ass that if the society as a whole were more intelligent and understood that it's more rewarding to not have your hand held and to figure stuff out, that these companies would be making sandboxes, and all of these themepark turds would be just for little kids. But, most adults these days have the mentality of little kids, so, enough of this rant.
STO probably made a boatload more than they needed to in order to break even on development. They're probably well into the green. Especially with an IP like Star Trek... What a nice little cash grab for that company.
Good for them. And I'm not an easy customer, so good for me.
