Okay so far I just spent two hours downloading a screensaver. It is pretty and all, but really i was so bored attacking slowly and wandering around. I had no idea where to go, there was nothing to kill, got ganked by some guy with a big axe. Then I did not where to head when i was in some sort of WoW death stage thing without the pretty sky. I just am not happy with how this is turning out...

Once you die, you see the spirit world about you and so that is why it's all strange and wierd looking.

Try finding a feint pillar of Light as these (there are many over the world) are where the Priests are. So try heading to a "Pillar of Light" and once there try and find the priest, an NPC man who will resurrect you if you speak with him.

Sometimes lag can make a priest hard to find or perhaps the priest has been killed at that pillar etc. so be careful.

Or - you can "Suicide" and this will take you to the nearest priest but you'll lose 10% of your stats which you'll have to regain once more.

Death in MO really does mean something - best be careful. ;-)

No, no, no, what you do is look around you and you'll see an enormous gloden '!' go here.

There is no one thing that you are supposed to do in MO. It's not a themepark mmo where you login and quest-grind your way through the game or go and drive the local wildlife to extinction. If you start the game thinking that you will be led in any specific direction then you're setting yourself up for dissapointment.

That being said SV can do a bit more to ease the newbie into the world something as simple as a cutscene and a "why am I here" story with a brief period of getting your controls setup properly and an explanation on how to ressurect. Also not spawning you where you can be insta-raped by anyone who happens to be at that spawning point.

If you read some patch notes and ask around then you will find out most of the basics. Up till now the beta community has been pretty douchy with helping newbies out in the form of guides, forum posting and irc questions.

I am not a WoW fan, I do not like the theme park style, but EVE and Darkfall at least start you off with a base and give you a couple missions. In my games, I like PvP and a lot of action. This game may not be for me, but I would like to give it a chance and not just call it quits. Can you at least tell me where to find something to kill?

There are usually wildlife outside the cities that are useful for hunting & killing.

It depends a lot on what city you start at- Meduli, Vadda & perhaps morin Khur are good places to start perhaps and tend to have animals outside within a few minutes sprint of the main gates.

Try hunting the weaker animals first and if you fancy  "tame" them as that will allow you to tame horses at around 40-45 skill and then you can try to learn riding (Mounted combat is rather effective atm and ofc you get to explore more quickly on horeback.

It is a very steep learning curve at the beginning but I kinda like it that way, personally - it keeps the fools & griefers out as their IQ is so often limited they rarely get to work out how to do anything before they quit. Reminds me of evolution and "Natural selection"

I like Vadda as a town to start in as all the crafting workbenches are close together and the animals (weasals, pigs, gazelles and Weisents) are not far outside. Look me up anytime if you want company.

Running around clueless for the first 2 hours (or more for some) is not a design decision its slackery.  These guys at SV are just trying to get the game ready for launch, and will release a sloppy, slapped together product.

Even if their is fools and grievers with a low IQ, SV also needs those people to pay the rent.  The game is quite basic and does not have a steep learning curve, it is just hard to find something to do when you start because you only have a handful of things you can do in the entire game.  Roleplay, craft, gather, extract, refine, tame, steal,  build a house, and kill whatever is alive.  That is Mortal Online.

The saddest part is that roleplaying is the only fun thing to do, and that can be done in any game.  The combat is quite horrid and that is all it would take for me to stay in a game like this.

Even if the decision for no quests is a design decision, there must be some tutorial "quests"to guide you through the game tools, i.e. what you can do.

Other than the "H"menu, there is nothing else. I must say the starter experience is rather bland and will not keep many casuals interested.

MO has never been aimed at casuals. Ever.

That aside, I havent followed MO very much, never posted on their offical forums (that I can remember) and didnt read much about the game except for the fact it was being made by guys that loved UO. So once I had finished downloading/installing/patching I pretty much knew what to expect when logging in. A sandbox. Yes, most of the shovels and pails have been removed for now, but theyre coming.

Im not defending SV, I have no reason to as my total experience with MO has cost me nothing but bandwidth so far, but Im open minded enough to wait and see what happens.

This isnt Fallen Earth, this is a real sandbox, just like UO was in the beginning.

P.S. What they DO need how ever, are tooltip boxes for everything (with the option to turn them off of course).

Its not for the casual player. SV never intended for this to reach or appeal to all audiences. They are going to implement a tutorial though.

But it is a good idea to target a large enough market that is willing to pay for the game and so far they're making EVE look positively WOW like in comparison.

This game is heading towards fewer subs than DFO, and if they can keep it running fine, but I suspect that won't be the case.

Even hardcore players need a source of information to get started off in a game, and that needs to come from either the Dev's or the player community (or both as we have in EVE)

But it is early, perhaps in time better new player tools and player guides will be forthcoming.
