STO is now at 6.2. So it is climbing steadily and will most likely continue to do so. I rated it a 9.3, as it is moving closer to what its potential should be. It is just my considered opinion and it will change as the week goes on. But it is doing alright by me for now.
Aion has been out longer and has total of over 550 rating votes.. STO is still very new and doesn't even have a total of 100 rating votes yet.. thats why the ratings are so different i'm sure STO will get a user rating around 8.12 soon ..
That's possible. It already went up .6 points since I made this post earlier today.

Just a general comment on some of the things I've been reading-
Many people keep saying STO has stale repetative gameplay. I wonder what they are comparing it to because I'm comparing it to other MMORPGs, and in every MMORPG there are some repetative elements. I can't shake the feeling that because this is Star Trek, people expected something truly unique, like the show was. I never came into it expecting that. I mean, I played LOTRO and it's basically the same kind of thing any MMORPG is, but that didn't stop me from playing and enjoying the game for months because it had it's own unique elements and a solid core, just like I feel this game does.
The Lord of the Rings storyline is truly unique, and it, like Star Trek, doesn't really lend itself well to an MMORPG setting. For one thing, there's not much fighting in it besides the epic battles. And yet they did adapt it, basically by putting a Lord of the Rings flavor on a standard MMORPG and adding unique elements that fit the theme like the epic storyline. I think Cryptic did the same thing here, with unique elements like splitting up the gameplay between ground and ship, which fits the show.
The reason I think comparing it to Aion is useful, besides the fact that I think Aion is terrible, is that often the chief complaint about STO is the supposed stale and repetative gameplay, and yet Aion scores higher with what (and I don't think many will argue with this) the most repetative gameplay of any MMORPG to date.
Something's just not right, and it's clear to me that the games are not being judged by the same standards.
When you guys say stale and repetative gameplay, do you mean compared to other MMORPGs, or do you mean compared to the game in your head you thought STO should've been?
I mean compared to other MMOs; all the MMOs that I have played for the past decade do have repetitve gameplay in them, but they generally don't have nothing but repetitive gameplay. In other words, there is generally something else to do in other games. In STO there are a couple episodic storylines; the Mirel Paris one was interesting. The Species 8472/Undine one looked like they copied what the Founders were doing during the Dominion War and just changed the races. Other than that, the vast majority of the missions available are the scan X amount of Y or kill X amount of Y missions. Yes you do get those missions in every MMO, but generally not to this extent. They liked to keep saying that the Federation was at war in excuse of the sheer amount of combat missions, but the war should be over; nearly every Federation planet you go to has a fleet of Klingon/Gorn/Orion ships around it. Game over, the Klingon faction won.
The arena style PvP in the game I suppose is meant to provide that distraction from the repetitive missions, but unfortunately it gets very old, very quickly as well. Yes they are promising more content, especially endgame content, but the rating is based off the game in its current state right now. The simple fact is that they should have spent more time in development, instead of pushing it out in its current state; if they had, you would have seen higher ratings for the game. Instead they shoved it out, so you get these ratings.
"Oh my, how horrible, someone is criticizing a MMO. Oh yeah, that is what a forum is about, looking at both sides. You rather have to be critical of anything in this genre as of late because the track record of these major studios has just been appalling." -Ozmodan

The thing is the ratings shouldn't be factoring in what its potential is, but what the state of the game currently is. If you think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread then great, rate it that way. Just don't rate it because it could one day reach its potential; all MMOs have potential, even post-NGE SWG and Vanguard.

This is another reason why the ratings here don't mean much. People don't actually rate the games for what they are. Some who love the game will go in and rate it all 10's. Some who hate the game will rate it at all 0's. These are not true ratings that reflect the actual state of the game and they terribly slew the results. I personally rated it high in some aspects(Graphics, Sound, fun, etc...) and lower in others(Community, Role-playing, etc...). I did not give it a single 10 or 0 in anything. my rating averaged out to a 8.1 so as you can tell I do like the game but acknowledge it's shortcomings.
Unless everyone rates every game as they truly feel about it the rating system doesn't mean much. Most go into the rating system with an agenda in mind and both sides("Fanboys" and "Haters") are equally guilty of this. I personally think very few people rate the games on this site honestly and that is why the rating system here is absolutely worthless.

I can't spek for anyone else, but I did indeed rate it the way I felt. You are correct however; those who are starry eyed fans and those who absolutely loathe the franchise will let that cloud their judgement when rating.

I'm not a fan of either game. I played STO a bit through OB, I played Aion into my low 40's. While both games have their problems it is very obvious that the Aion developers spent much more time, and put a lot more thought into their game. Where as in STO I got the feeling the idea was simply a quick buck and a souless, no point, carebear (and by carebear I MEAN CAREBEAR, no penalty what-so-ever for ANYTHING) game.
I have to agree with the OP, on the STO positives at least, I never played Aion. Space combat is new and different for me, the bridge officer concept is also new and different for me, ground combat is not terrible imo, about the same as many MMO's. I don't get the blanket statements of "they didn't even try" that some keep repeating; for me the game plays like an episode of the TV show, they did try, and they succeeded imo.
How many missions have you completed that didn't require you to kill someone because the characters in the TV series and even the movies rarely did.
ST isn't about killing things, but what Cryptic delivered was a ST themed spaceship combat game. Good for those who enjoy it, not so much for those hoping for a bit more.
There is enough similarity between the TV shows and the missions in the game that I'm remembering some of those old TNG shows I watched years ago. Is it exactly the same? no, and how could it be? if they just copy/pasted real episodes into the game you would just be reading text the whole time. Obviously it is a combat centric game just like every other MMO out there. And yes there are missions where you don't kill anything.
