FYI - It does cost money to change from the EU client to NA

I've contemplated starting up again, so I verified that I have both EU and NA accounts.  It was my understanding that you don't have to purchase the NA client if you've already purchased the EU client (which I did last May).  When I logged in to my NA account, however, I only had the options to purchase the client and subscribe, not just to subscribe.  I didn't have any intention of transferring from EU to NA - I just wanted to subscribe on NA and start a new character. I submitted a support ticket and was informed that you have to pay one way or another:

  • Pay to transfer an EU character to NA (11€) and purchase a new subscription (~$15 USD) on NA - not too expensive, but still a charge
  • Buy the NA client and start fresh (~$50, which includes one free month)

So, in order to play on NA, I've either got to spend ~$30 USD (~$15 to transfer an EU character + ~$15 subscription fee) or ~$50 for the client all over again.  You can't just transfer the client purchase itself.

Please note, I'm not complaining about this.  I'm just making people aware, since I think there's a general perception that if you bought the client once, you don't need to buy it again (that's what I thought).  That's true, but only if you pay to transfer a character, even if you don't want that character.  Players that took advantage of the free character transfers didn't have to pay anything, of course, but that offer is no longer valid.

I don't know how anyone could  of been confused about this. If you want to make a new character, transfer and then delete.

Weren't there meant to be "free character transfers"?

They had free transfers for a month, they then extended the free transfer by another month, they then extended it another few days. Then it finished.

There were free transfers.  Like I said, I think there might be a general perception that if you already paid for one client, you won't have to pay for the other.   It's certainly what I thought.   I remember back when NA1 was announced and there was a lot of debate over what you would have to pay for.  At the time, it was that you had to pay for the NA client if you wanted to play on NA from Day 1, but you wouldn't have to pay for the client if you chose to transfer later. Maybe I just misinterpreted that. Regardless, I'm just trying to clarify the situation.

p.s. I did pay for a transfer (although I'll probably just end up deleting the character). I just have to wait for the character to become available on my NA account (it doesn't happen immediately) so that I can subscribe without having to pay for the client again.

How did you get an NA account w/o paying the 50 bucks in the first place?

  • rhinokrhinok Member UncommonPosts: 1,798

You have to create an account before you can buy the game. That being said, it was created automatically for me when NA went live, I assume - same info, user ID, etc...

I used the free character transfer from EU to NA, then subbed to NA.

I didn't have to pay for anything but the sub.

Because he had already purchased the EU client, you do NOT need to purchase both the EU and NA clients in order to transfer you characters.

Yup - had I take advantage of the free transfer, it wouldn't have cost me anything.  Since I didn't I had to pay to transfer a character I didn't want to keep or pay full price for the NA client.  The expense isn't all that great and it doesn't really bother me, I just thought I could create a new subscription on the NA client without having to transfer.  That's not the case.

Read it as character + client transfer and everything's fine.

If you have a blank account and you open a support ticket they will move the account for you.

Not true.  I had an EU account with an old character and an empty NA account.  In order for me to play on NA, I had to pay to transfer my character over from EU to NA or buy a new NA client.  I chose to transfer my character, then delete it and create a new one.
