games using real money for currency...

diskmedeldiskmedel Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 36

just wrote a big long post, then my IE.exe crashed and i dont have the energy to re-write it all ;(

so im just asking plain and simple, does anyone know any game that uses real money for currency, which you can later exchange (withdraw) for real money?

like project-entropia, where you buy entropia dollars for real dollars, and you can exchange them back to real dollars if you make any money in the game (like a casino, you buy credits which you can withdraw for money)

sofar i only found 2, project-entropia and warofconquest, heard you can do so too in second life..

so, does anyone know of any such game? i would appreciate it greatly. (preferably mmorpg)

they are not common, but they DO exist! :)

cheers

Hmmm, there are actually a LOT of them bud if you look at the big picture.  DAoC, AC, The Sims Online, SWG, Ultima Online, and more all have a very easy way of transferring your real money into the game money or goods and then later reselling it.  With ALL these games I mention, the process of selling back is much faster and easier then in project entropia as well.  I have heard of many people trying to trade in their PEDs back to real $ in PE and waiting months and months without seeing anything!

Ofcourse the method of transfer in all the games I mention is simply www.ebay.com.  Combined with their super easy, super fast and secure form of both paying and recieving money for in-game goods, www.paypal.com this has to be the kind of viable option you seek, if you just look at the big picture.  ;)   Other then that, I know of no other games like PE.  I do think games like Project Entropia will pave the path for future games to follow their very successful currency approach.. I bet they have made a "killing" on their "free game"  ;)

I cashed out $750 worth of PED 7 months ago. Still waiting...

guess what, i just made another 20 minutes long post and my iexplorer.exe crashed... AGAIN.... damn school-crap :D

ohwell, thanks for your reply, but im not very fond of the idea of selling stuff on e-bay... when PE came out several years ago everyone thought that would be the future economic system for most games, and after all these years still not one game has come out?

soon ill get tired of waiting and start my own mmorpg with a similar system to the one used in PE :)

Poor guy with your IE crashes.  Heh.

Yes, I understand that the idea of cash in the game using your credit/debit card as an immediate way to source your in game character is cool.  The problem buddy is that with Project Entropia, they don't hesitate at all to take your money and convert it from whatever currency it is whether it be yen, US dollars, Euros or whatever and give you some PEDs in the game and also take a fee for doing so.  If I remember correctly I think they give you like exactly $18.75 worth of "PED" for $20 US cuz they charge you a fee as well.  Regardless, giving them real money for their virtual money is no problem at all.  The problem is when you want to transfer it back to your bank from that virtual world.  Another fee first off.  And months upon months upon months of waiting.  And lots of angry people fill the forum boards on PE fansites complaining of never getting it, or if they do, it's many months later.

So Great and novel idea... it just doesn't work well (unless you just spend all your virtual money and never wanna transfer it back to real $)

However with Ebay and Paypal, you can buy virtual goods or money in many different online games.  And typically within hours you got your goods.  (not quite as fast as the $ to Ped transfer in PE, but usually fast)  And if you go to sell money on Ebay, and require the popular Paypal payment from the buyer of your goods, then you will get your money as soon as they pay you thru Paypal.  Not as fancy and there are more fees when selling your stuff back for real $, but hey atleast it works better then the current PE system.

Diskmedel, I understand your liking PE's concept.  I myself just wish it worked better.  Also as cool as PE is, it is very easy to use your PEDS just trying to skill up or equip your character the tiniest bit.  And then whatever you do, whether it be mining, crafting, or hunting... you are sure to very quickly go through those PEDS way too fast.  Almost like casino slot machines.  Each bullet you shoot at mobs or bomb you ignite trying to find resources cost you PEDS.  And that means money down the drain.  Especially seeing that in all liklihood what you get for the money you spent killing the mob or money you spent finding your "poor deposit of oil" is much more then you just got rewarded.  I really think of their game as a "slot machine" type of mmorpg.  Lots of money in, not much out.  And with most other mmo games that allow Ebay transactions, there is as much money made through the game (by the sellers) as their is spent on those goods.  So while Ebay isn't as fancy, "next-gen", or original as PE, it really does seem to work much more efficiently.

Oh yes, and I will be waiting on your mmo to be released.  I got my credit card ready to buy some of your in game currency.. I'll need to equip my avatar.  But hey man, if I wanna get my money back to go on a "real" date Friday night, let's make that possible too okay?  ;)

Well, such a thing is almost like all those Internet Casinos.  They must be very rare cause it takes a very special liscence to allow customers to input real money into a game and at some point either lose or win back money.

Here in Quebec Canada we have a law where only the Government can allow raffles, lotories, and contest from outside Quebec to be allowed.   That's why a lot of those contests on the Internet I see, you will always see "Excluding Quebec".  A few other countries are like this too, unfortunatly I forgot which ones.

So if such a MMORPG were to be available and legal, it would most likely be illegal to play in Quebec unless they get a Liscence from the Quebec government and I'm sure they couldn't care less for just 1 Province in all of Canada.

And not only that, but to make money online you gotta be over 18 or 21 depending where you live, or with the guidance of a parent.

All in all, if you can actually gamble real money in a MMORPG, then have a chance of making or losing money, it's like playing in the Casino.  It's illegal to release with a certain Liscence, getting such a Liscence is expensive, on top of that kids and teens cannot play without their parents permission and we all know kids and teens are the largest market for Video games today, so such a game would only sell to adults in which the market is smaller.

I think the question to ask is this:

Do you want to play a MMORPG with real money cause you want to make money?  Or because it's fun and challenging like playing at the Casino?

Cause if it's because you want to make profit, then it's exactly like those Internet Casinos.  They aren't a very profitable market cause too many people are paranoid of their system that may fake or cheating.  And a company will never open a game unless they know they can make profit.  So if not many people play and put their real money into the game, the company will never ever put their own money on the line to pay up for people that "won" in-game.

And if you're playing it for the challenge.  Then good for you.  If everyone that plays that real money MMORPG is into it for a challenge too, IMHO it's definatly rich people or gamblers.  I make a good living, but never will I gamble my real money on the internet through a video game.

Well Johnark, I feel that PE is almost like a slot machine myself.  That doesn't mean that it is.  I feel like that because of the way their system works.  They could probably legally get away with it because they are selling you "virtual goods and services" for your money.  I put in about $120 into the game last year myself and went though the money in no time (less then a month) and wound up with a bunch of crap in the game that was essentially worthless.  About 35 different types of minerals I had mined, some crap armor and a decent gun.  But the better the gun is, the more rounds of ammo it uses each shot.  And with little skill, you'll blast away at mobs many times to put them down.  I decided to quit playing the game when I had to invest more real money to continue playing.  I thought it was fun yes.  I liked the mining and crafting too.  But mining costs money too as it requires using "bombs" to try and find resourse deposits under the ground.  And it is completely hit and miss almost random.  I hit a few large deposits of a resource and kept going back to the same exact spot at different times over many days and would hit nothing.  I remember figuring that each bomb in the game was the equivelent of 10 cents in US money.  And it is very possible to blast away 50 bombs and not find many resources at all running around with your mineral detectors.  Almost everything in the game that is decent has to be crafted by a player which requires those resources.  The guns ammo costs the equivalent of about a penny per round I think, with some guns using as many as 20 rounds per shot.  And some monsters could easily take 30 to 50 shots at them to finally take them down.

The game of Project Entropia is a great game I think actually.  I love its insanely huge skill system that takes forever to max out.  I love how the fighting actually requires skill and lets you target each shot while you try and run backwards from the monster running at you.  Much better then the auto-attack stuff.  I love how it takes soooooo long to skill up and that there are literally hundreds of skills.  The armor, guns and weapons are very cool.  The monsters are challenging to fight.  The world is huge and a pleasure to explore even without dungeons.  Crafting is actually a lot of fun in the game I think, and I love the way it works, even compared to games like Dark Age of Camelot.  Crafting in PE is much more of a rewarding and fun process.  So for me, I wasn't trying to make money, I just thought the game was hella fun.  But when I went through $120 in less then a month playing it, and pretty much came to a point where I needed to again invest more to buy more stuff, I quit playing.  The game can be played with no money at all, and there is no monthly fee, but doing so is pretty much pointless.  They have designed a game that makes all the fun and cool stuff cost investment.  And a huge investment it costs.  Mindark is brilliant and I know that they have made a fortune on this game.  If only they could somehow cut the costs down so more fun could be had with less cost, they might be able to keep a much larger player base long enough to really make it a rewarding game.

However, I still call Project Entropia the same as a "mmo slot machine" simply because it sucks in way, way, way too much money and leaves players quitting the game broke and moving on to another mmo.  I knew several players in the game who invested as much as $1,500 to $3,000 in just a couple or 3 months, and even after that investment and tons of time playing, their avatars best skills were maybe 3% of their potential.  I quickly came to my own conclusion that it would likely cost over $10,000 to skill a character to a "high level" player in just a few of the many skills.  This may be wrong, but I certainly know that it costs way, way, way too much for me to play it.  When I invested $120 in skilling and playing and was still like the biggest newb ever compared to the skill potential of the game, I knew I was in way over my head.

I took one look at project entropia and said " JUST HOW FREAKING STUPID DO YOU THINK I AM??"

The game is terrible, you can walk through most of the stuff in the game, the controls are terrible and unintuitive the artwork aside from the character models is terrible, and I hear peopel complaining about losing cash to bugs.

Of course your having trouble getting your money back from them when you cash out.  Theyre running a freaking scam... Why the heck did you put 750$ in there to begin with?

I also could tell just how retarded the people who run it were by reading their website.  It basically acted as if it were talking to investors and was talking about how rich they would get off of the idiots who would put their money in the game.  Only thing is the site was just as accesable to the players as anyone else.

I can't describe the sheer anger I feel at this game.  Its like bringing home an arcade game that you have to put 25 cents in every time you want to play that gets warped to the people who sold it to you when you could just buy the gameboy and play it as much as you want....  And then for this brilliant new approach to gaming they use a game with graphics on the same level as tetris...

Bottom line is these games just end up costing a whole lot more than other mmorpg games.

I did not put $750 into the game. I have over a year and a bit of playing put in around $200 into the game (a years subscription to most MMO is about $150ish) and I happened to get a very good item from something I killed. I auctioned it and someone payed a bit over $800 for it.

I took a bit of that and played some and then a few days later I decided that I was done with PE as I had actually gotten more outta the game than I had put in which is exceddingly rare in that game.

I am as I stated still waiting.

I got better things to spend real life cash with than with in-game items...

online game subscriptions are ok but just spending large amounts of cash for something in-game is just plain insane.

as for the IE crashing multiple of times, you should really switch to Firefox.

i played quit a while to Project Entropia and ther is many things that i liked much but the whay Mindark deal with their customer make me thing they are not trustworthy, they almost never give eny informtion on the game and take their time to corect bug that make player lose money.

I still think this game have a good potential but there is a lot of things that need to change before i put eny more money in it(not that i puted that much, i was skilled but with no equipment lol).

diskmedel when you write a long post you should type in wordpad or something like that and copy past so you dont lose it if something happen.

U don't HAVE to put money in! I think it's a great game, even though I didn't deposit. I have played many other MMO's and they just didn't get the hold on me like Pe did. I have now played for 13 or 14 months, and although the hunting system SUCKS atm (since Version 6.1), when they introduced the new looting system. But the looting system will get better I am sure, since they have lost many well paying players since that system was introduced. Still, I see a game with endless potential, and I think it's especially great that there is no skill-level capture at all (exept for the sweating skill).

Don't worry. Being eaten by a crocodile is just like going to sleep. In a giant blender.

zaxtor99  ... oh my, you really must have spent quite some time answering my post.. kinda long reply :D appreciate it greatly! :D

and thank you to all the other for the replies too! =)

but zax, if i sell something through e-bay and he doesn't pay, then what? :/

can't prove i gave him his stuff, and he could't prove it if i was a nasty scammer who took his money and just left (not that i am a scammer, i hate em)

sure, it's a lottery in PE too, lottery when you perform any kind of action, and a lottery when you want your money back from the game...

oh well... guess im better of finding myself another mmorpg :)

but poor as i am it will have to be a free one (i kinda like rubies of eventide, but that game got alot of stuff that could be improved.. (not complaining, for a free game it rocks) )

morrowind online... god, that would be a dream come true! :D

oh, and about me ie.exe, not much to do about it, school computers ;D

though i am the only pupil with administrator rights in the school (do not want to abuse the trust given to me :)
