Hey guys,
I currently have a 8800 GTX 768 nvidia card...but seen some good deals on a 9800 GT 1GB card for like 150 bucks, is that card much better than the 8800 GTX?? trying not to spend $230 on a 260 895MB GTX, but if i need to to get a noticeable boost in FPS, then i will running quad core, 4 gigs ram. Mostly just play MMO's, AoC, LOTRO...thanks for any incite...to many nvidia cards hard to tell "what" is better than "what"

New card today= Minimum 260 GTX at least then...I got 260 in Dec 08, and have never regretted it since. I also play AoC in DX10 only. 8 and 9 series is too close IMO. Buy 260 or above for a real increase, or its just a waste of cash (imo)
I suggest ati, better bang 4 your buck and it blows 8800 out the water

The following statement is false
The previous statement is true
If I'm not totally wrong, yours is actually slightly better. In any case, very small difference. GTX260 would be in that price range and it's a decent upgrade.
I was wondering this myself but it seems the GT 260 would be a better decision like the above poster has stated.
The 9800GT performs worse then the 8800GTX. The 9800GT is simply a rebranding of the 8800GT based on the G92 architecture. If you want a step up, here are the cards that perform better then the 8800GTX:
For AoC ATI cards will perform a notch higher as AoC favors ATI hardware. Like the poster above mentioned, unless you are willing to go for anything above the GTX260, its a pointless investment. Also you should giveup on figuring out nVidia naming convention. Its hard to keep up with all the different names they come up with.
thanks for the info, guess ill wait for the 260 GTX to drop a little in price, best buy has them on sale for a BFG OC version for $215 bucks, but nvidia is getting ready to release a whole nuther batch of cards...i used to be sold on ATI card before, but must say ive had alot less issues since going nvidia for the last few years, but im sure every configuration is different
Yea considering 9800 GT = 8800 GT yours is slightly faster. Lotro also runs much better on ATI cards and should get DX11 soon so that's something to consider. I'm not sure where you were checking prices but newegg has a GTX 260 for $180 or a Radeon 5770 for $152.
Since the 5770 is usually faster than the GTX 260, AoC and Lotro prefer ATI, Lotro is getting DX11, and no mmo's use Physx, should be pretty easy choice.
But remember your current card is still about equal to the 9800GT which is ~$100 so we're not talking huge upgrades here. Probably will be enough to get you where you want though, especially if you can sell off that 8800GTX used.
I belive it has been proven by many peoples problems that AoC does NOT favor ATI, and people with (like myeself) Nvidiea has little to none issues with it. Buying a card for DX11 is like buying a card for DX10, and we all know how long it became before it was really used by some, and is still very much unused...
Nividia GTX 260 and upwards is my advice, less trouble then ATI (drivers)
ATI has good hardware, but I think many users agree that the software is lesser then good...to put it nice(!)
The 8800 GTX is far better then the 9800 GT.
You could get the GTX 285 but I'm not sure that the small upgrade will be worth the cost.
I would advice you to wait a generation or two before buying your next graphics card.
The GTX 470 and GTX 480 will probably be released in April but they vill be VERY expensive.
And forget about about the GTX 260, it's not that much better from what you have now.
Would you buy a new graphics card if it only gave you a 25-30% increase in performance?
I wouldn't.

Bullshit!
The 8800 GTX is better than the 9800 GTX+ (notice the "+") so no need for buying any current card besides the ones with two GPUs and they are expensive but I guess that the 8000 GTX did cost a lot of money too.

Hmm, nice to see that my HD 4890 kicks the GTX 275s ass, some said that the GTX 275 was the better card but I guess not, huh?
