Black Screen crash with ATI card

FarScapeFarScape Member UncommonPosts: 185

My buddy and I are trying to play DDO. I run the game just fine maxed out graphics and everything. My buddy who is using an ATI card keeps crashing to a black screen and has to hard reboot every 30s-1min in the game. anyone have any ideas we have been looking on the ddo forums and alot of ppl hav been having the same problem but there is no fix...

Sounds to me like the card is either overheating or there is a memory leak.

If my memory is good I think this is what happened when LOTRO launched and you couldn't use high-res graphics in vista x64. It would crash after about 30 minutes.

I do know if you follow @catalystmaker on twitter the ATI 10.1 drivers have been hotfixed three times already. My suggestions make sure you have the latest directx from MS which is back in Aug/Sept. If running a 64bit OS try tinkering with the high-res off and see what happens.

If it's over heating see if can blow off the dust.

Goodluck! Hopefully your friend will get it figured out.

    Please post the following info...

Operating system, Win 98x, XP, Vista (32/64), W7 (32/64), Linux, etc:

    Video card make and model:

drivers used for the video card:

if you do not know how to get this info please do this:  press the "window key" and "R" together at the same time to open the Run command window.  Type "dxdiag" without the quotes and press enter.  System info under "Operating System" will specific the OS used.  Then go to the Display tab and look at "Name", "Manufacturer" and Drivers "Version" and "Date".  Please post the info for you and your friends computers seperately.

there are several possibilities and any statement as to what the problem might be would be a blind guess without providing any details. Post the requested info and you will get proper advice.

Is his card a 4870? If so, this is a major pain, and ATI support generally advises a warranty repair.

    Solutions I have heard of:

    Updare BIOS (flash)

Manually set fan speed with rivatuner

Manually overclock your card through rivatuner, but use original settings (this disables powerplay - basically your card runs at 500 MH in 2d and 750 in 3d. the crash is caused by the change of this from 500 to 750 - of course, it's more complicated)

return it, ATI is glad to help.

I've been having the same problem with a 4850 I have. When trying to run various games. AoC trial, Freerealms, LoTR trial (never did get to actually try it), haven't gotten DDO setup yet. Tried contacting particular cards manufacturer (Diamond multimedia) they seem to be blowing me off! I can go through ATI you say for some kind of replacement!?
