OK.. this one may take the cake. The game does not have global chat channels.. no general chat.. no trade chat etc. I just came across this post where a moderator announced the "official" IRC Mortal Online Trade Channel where "Players can now advertise their trades and services in a more global manner."
I am struggling with this concept... not having in game trade channels or chat channels because it's "not realistic", but supporting an official IRC trade channel?
This is bizarre...
http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/29902-mortal-online-trade-channel-irc.html
Edited to add: If this is just a placeholder for beta and they plan on implementing a real in-game chat at launch then this would make sense to me. I haven't seen any word that this is just a placeholder though and everything I have read says that they don't want to have general chat (or trade chat) in game as it takes away from the realism...

Im sure they'll find another hack to add an ingame IRC.
I win!!! LOL@U
You have to install mIRC just to chat with people... lol... that is pretty bad. They want to make it as realistic as possible, on the other hand you have to install IRC software just to chat... lol...
"Realism" means no features that are normal in MMOs as they do not have time to add them before release? Is that what is happening?
Just in case they remove it, here is a screenshot

The thing is, it reeks of a failed design.
You won't allow for global chat, but then advertise basically, a global chat to circumvent your 'brilliant' design.
It gets more apparent by the day, that their only design philosophy was to steal everything from UO, and dump it into a completely different game and hope it worked.
it will given more time
I am really not sure what to make of this. They dont *want* an IG global chat but they are advertisting an official mIRC channel for it?
That does not make any sense. If they did not want it in the game then they sure would not advertise it in mIRC so most probably excuse is that they dont have the resources to create one or even worse, they dont have the know-how to create one since the Unreal 3 Engine does not offer one to be easilly modded in?
This is beyond bizzarre.

Well they do have a chat box with local and guild channels so they must have the know how. I think its to keep players from non-stop bashing the game, which turns the global channels into flame wars like in most games and ruins what little immersion this game gives. Personally i think global channels are pretty much mandatory these days and actually helps the game be more enjoyable if you are constantly reading stuff.
But yeah the trade irc thing is a very stupid idea, don't know what the mods were thinking on that one.
You are just nitpicking now.
My sig is just as logical as your posts are
It seems you didn't play EverQuest in its prime. Having no global chat channels makes for a fun game and a tightly knit community. I am happy they are adding an irc channel as well. It makes it so both parties are satisfied, both the for and against.
I would also like to note, how long do you really think it will be before there is an addon that acts as an external IRC client in-game?
Soon I would imagine.
So you want realism and no in-game chat but you support addons like WoW has?
Its a placeholder untill they add billboards for towns and so on.
No need to waste resoure implementing a trade global channel (which also has to be moderated, etc) in game when you can set up an IRC channel for 5 min.
They do not want any sort of in-game chat, they only want people to use IRC as they want it to be more realistic...
(realistic means they dont have time to add it into the game, or dont know how, so they just say it wont be in the game)

No this is bullshit, the SV devs diddnt make the irc trade channel, the irc moderators did.
They want markets to form locally and if they add an in-game global trade channel then people will use it to just talk shit, discuss RL politics and all kinds of other crap and trading will become secondary like in every game with global public chat channels. Ever play wow and see the trade channel? That is the sort of conversation MO is trying to avoid by limiting chat to local.
As long as IRC and the internet exists people will use it to communicate so being against the irc mods creating a trade channel is moot.
I'm not disputing the need of some sort of trade channel (for the sake of filtering it out of the main channel), but it needs to be a local channel, limited to the city or marketplace. That way players have to actually travel from place to place if the want to communicate with other people 'in-game' .
Every MMO offers some sort of out-of game communication tools like forums and irc chat. But the idea of global public chat channels in-game go against the spirit of the game and alot fo people were attracted to MO for the types of features that make the game immersive. Because they diddn't have instant messaging in medieval times. Guild chat is only global because you buy an object that links the collective conscious of the guild members. Telepathic communication between random players doesn't exist in MO and neither does the internet.

Making it "official" is different than random people making it. Sure random people can make it, but when a moderator says its "official" that means Starvault is backing it.
When something is official, the company is behind it and supports it. If Starvault does not support this, don't make it official. Simple.

Even if they do support it, you make it seem like its a real issue. There is already a normal MO irc channel and a MO help channel. These are out of game resources. It's no big deal if they allow another channel for trading. What SV allows in game and what they allow out of game are different.
Some people are attracted to MO because the immersive features.

How is it more or less immersive if you ALT-Tab to a mIRC window then just clicking on the channel in game?
It just does not make any sense. If they dont want it then they should not have an official mIRC channel for it because then they might as well implement it IG. The consequence will be just that people will ALT-Tab to it.

It's immersive because you don't have to use irc if you want to trade with people. You could go to the marketplace in a city and sell your stuff. If they add a global or regional trade channel then it will be used for every sort of chatting. The type of global chat that they don't want int he game. They are designing the game so people have to move their character around if they want to do stuff.
If they add in global trade then it obsoletes the market areas they create in npc towns. If they add in any sort of global chat beyond guild chat then it obsoletes any gathering places they make in the game and discourages players from forming there own.
If you alt+tab then anything you do after that is your own business. The irc channel wasn't made by SV, but SV isn't disputing its creation and designation as official.

=. Because they diddn't have instant messaging in medieval times. Guild chat is only global because you buy an object that links the collective conscious of the guild members. Telepathic communication between random players doesn't exist in MO and neither does the internet.
I want immersive and deep gameplay as much as anyone. I rp in every MMO I play and stay in character as much as it is practical to do so. Practical is the point here. Its a game period and at the end of the day you have to have things that make it more practical to communicate. I am not for global chat personally but they need to make regional and city wide chat available. If not then MO will be the most lonely MMO ever. Also if your against global due to immersion reasons then clan chat should not exist outside of regional because walkie talkies and cell phones didnt exist back in these times either.
What some people consider practical, standard and necessary others consider immersion ruining. If they add in any sort of global, regional or citywide "public" chat then it becomes the largest and most public chat channel will become the default chennel players use to communicate in game. Global channels will be the shit talk and RL topics channel (like in every game), regional channels will be the defense channel, some pkers are in the area and kill 1 noob and the whole region knows about it. Citywide channels reduce the need to gather at various places in the city, why even make a market area or a tavern when everyone can yell wtb/wtt from anywhere in the city and socialize from anywhere in the game?
I support guild chat being global for the obvios reason that it's a guild. Also SV has created a reasonable explanation for why you can't communicate with the public globally but can communicate with your guild globally.
The way you make a guild is to buy a guild stone and place it in a house. When you make the guild you get a 'collective conscious' upgrade at creation that lets you link with other guild members.
You could argue why the don't have these guild stones for the random public, but the nature of a guild and what it takes to create one in this game means that your character has to have a connection with the other characters to communicate in this way. When they add in territory control the guild chat may be limited to the guilds territory, that's how it was supposed to be.
My sig is just as logical as your posts are
I know Mortal Online is fairly broken in many ways, but what exactly is wrong about not having global chat? I prefer not to have global chat, it forces people to be more social.
I don't think there is anything wrong with it.. if that's what you like. I would prefer one but understand the stated concept so I'm good with that. What I find bizarre is that they then go and create an Official IRC Mortal Online Trade channel.
Either you support this kind of communication and put it in game... or you don't. This seems hypocritcal to me. Make an official trade channel on a 3rd party program.. which you have to tab out of game to use... just bizarre..

If that keeps the immersion for you then that is nice for you but I bet most people will think. This will actually make it WORSE for people who want to follow the spirit of the game and not tab out to use a 3rd party program to communicate. Those people will be standing in town shouting about their wares while most of the customers are setting up deals on the Official IRC Trade Channel and bypassing the guy.

Accept that they diddn't create it, irc moderators created it. As long as there is IRC there will be ways to communicate with other players outside of the game. SV can't control the internet.
All it takes for thsi channel to not be 'official' as everyone states, is for SV to say that they don't have an official trade IRC channel. At best this is a community project started by the IRC moderators, who also happen to be forum moderators.
Calling it Official, doesn't make it Official, it's not even a sticky, just a post on the forums.
