My 2 weeks worth.

cjblaze36cjblaze36 Member Posts: 3

Ok, first thing is full disclosure.  I have only been playing MMO's for about two years.  Most of those two years have been in WoW, with a little time in WAR looking for a better PvP experience.  I liked WoW, but never felt at home there and WAR was great through Tier 1.  I followed DFO for a while on forums all over the net.  I finally took the plunge two weeks ago.  I play on NA1 for 2-4 hours a day with work and other responsibilities taking up the majority of my time.  Here is my thoughts.  Take them for what you will.

First and foremost I suggest finding a good clan.  I did a ton of research in clan recruitment forums, I found the one I was interested in applied.  I will leave out details about the clan and it's structure due to being a recruit and leaving such things up to the veteran officers.  That being said, they helped me a great deal.  Everything from starter weapons, armor, and mounts.  They were very helpful with my newb questions and pointed me in the right direction.  I make clan's my first point, because this game is based on political exploration and conquest.  How do you expect to accomplish these without a good clan backing you.  Take some time and do you homework, find a clan that meets your expectations and interest's.  Be active when your online.

As far as the grind goes, it is intensive.  I have been crafting steadily and fighting goblins, kobolds, undead and the like raising my skills.  As of right now, all my stats are above 30 except intelligence (magic is on the back burner for now).  I make all my own gear that I need for the PVE and PvP I engage in.  To be honest most of my PvP is me getting rolled by vets, but I knew catching up would take a while when I subbed.  I get mad, don't get me wrong, but I spawn back in, go grab some more gear and stay clear of the area that the red just pwned at.  I'll get him one day, maybe rolling with my clan.  It's the way of the Agon, survival of the fittest.  You learn early what to take out of the bank for what evolution you are heading out to do.

I have read on the forums about people being aggravated about the lack of things to do.  That has not been a problem for me.  I have definitely spent my hours grinding mobs,  whacking away at trees and rocks, but you have to mix it up.  I have been in raiding parties, been assigned scouting missions, defended our city from both land and sea, sieged another clan's holding, sparred with clan mates, grouped up and took out higher level mobs for gear and mats, layed ambushes, been ambushed, hunted a kraken once (unsucessfully I might add) and that's not even mentioning all the political aspects of the game I have not been part of yet.  This is a sandbox game, it is what you make of it.  I mention again a lot of these things would not be possible without a good clan.

In closing I have been pissed off, pissed on, rolled, pwned, owned, noobified, but never discouraged.  I am two weeks in and loving it.  So this is what I've been doing and how I feel.  If any of this was of interst or help to you I hope to see you in Agon, preferably before you see me, hehe.

That's it, sorry for the long read.  Please feel free to question, comment and/or criticize.  Good luck and keep your head low.

Special thanks to Paragus1, Agricola1, ProfRed, Cecropia and many others.  Your posts were very helpful in my decision to try DarkFall.

Great read, glad to see you noobs are having fun! Don't worry most noobs I kill I end up rezzing after since I don't really care about goblin loot. :P

Glad to see you're still going strong after 2 weeks, I was and am PWNED more times than Robert Downey JR has visited the Betty Ford clinic! In the begining getting owned isn't much fun, it can be frustrating since your weapon skill is low and you can't really afford to run around in scale. Also you haven't really learnt much about combat yet or had enough practice to do much.

That's why you join a clan, advice, help, protection and access to atleast half decent gear. Imagine if you'd spent two weeks alone at a srter city getting raped by bad guys whenever they turned up? It still happens in a clan but it makes life a hell of a lot easier. Give it a month or two depending on how much you play and you'll be in a far better position, still getting rolled but no doubt you'll be getting some kills yourself!

If it isn't in the bank it isn't yours and it's only pixels!

    Welcome to Agon!

This is the >MMORPG.com< forums - Darkfall section. Where do you think you are?

Yes I also see many new players in the starter areas and as far as I can see ingame people are joining all the time. And from the reports most of them like it a lot.

If you don't want to read it, what are you doing in the >Darkfall< section on the >mmorpg.com< forums?

edit: hehe, this game is getting so many good reports that some people are getting frustrated

If you don't want to read it don't click on it. I'm glad to read about new people getting into the game.

Great read, and thanks for sharing.  It is always nice to hear people's impressions especially when they haven't played a lot with sandboxes before.  The grind is neverending so as long as you can find things to do and give yourself little goals that you can succeed at you won't be frustrated too much by it, and then there are those moments where your heart is racing, your hands are shaking, and you just got a great kill and scored some great loot and it makes it all worth it.  Hope to hear more from you.

With all the repetitive and rather boring content in the game, do you think you'll enjoy the game even after some 2 years?

That's the reason why I didn't bother to pay for the game really, as it wouldn't keep me interested for longer then maybe some 6 month. It's lacking alot of sand in the sandbox.

Tell me about it, hands shaking it what gets me killed! I seem to press everything but the right UI input in the panic of the moment!  If getting jumped in Darkfall was like trying to drive a car, I'd keep turning the wind screen wipers on and the radio, instead of turning the key! I do like to play DF off and on. Some good things coming for it this year.

Great to hear you are having a good time with DFO. Joining a clan was the best thing you could have done, it gets you into the fun stuff right off the bat. I'm going into my third month now and will be here for at least 5 more months. I liked it so much that when I resubbed this month I bought the six month subscription.

So in stead you come to the Darkfall forums on MMORPG to look for people bashing it. Lords knows there is enough of that in the forums for every game out, it's always refreshing to read people having fun and good experiences and then letting others know about it then it is to read post after post of negative crap about a game.

This game got some bad press when it was released, they have changed a lot of things over the last year and more and more people are trying it now and more and more are liking what they see.

As others have said, if ya don't want to read a persons 2 week impression of the game then don't read it, you were probably hoping to read a negative 2 week impression when you clicked and then were upset when it was positive.

Stupid people. Some are ready to pay 60-80 bucks for a few hours of action, and some aren't ready to pay the same money because the fun won't last longer than 6 months...

So much of the content in this game is dynamic and based on politics that I don't think it's so boring and repetitive unless you make it that way.  You also have the dynamic lore stuff going on that you can become a part of which is a lot of fun.

People who complain about the lack of/repetitive content in a sandbox just don't understand what a sandbox game is.  Sandbox games are, and have always been about community interaction.  Guilds/Corps/whatever, are a huge part of the game.  They, and the interactions between them are your "content".

That being said, some people are perfectly content to solo as well, but they understand the nature of the sandbox environment.  You make your own game.  Enjoy it or not, it's your call.

Hey Prax, your definition of a "sandbox" game is slightly different from mine.  My ideal sandbox game also includes lots of dev created content--but it is all optional.  It's there if you want to dive into the lore of the world, or just to do something different from time to time.

The perfect sandbox MMORPG creates a world/universe where the player can do whatever they want (within reason).  It also provides tools for players to create custom content AND it has deep lore that can be experienced through plenty of optional dev created content.

I can agree with that.  I think CCP does this reasonably well in EVE, which has huge amount of lore at this point, with a constantly developing storyline.  I'm not sure how much players influence that story though.

From what I understand, Adventurine are incorporating the players into their lore through live events, such as the recently posted Blood Chronicles, which I think is great.  It might not be implemented in the best fashion right now, but I give them props for trying.

I sincerely hope sandboxes are making a comeback.  EVE winning a few awards this year, and Darkfall getting better and better, give me hope for the future.

    Here's the thing.....

People feel the need to post about their first week / two weeks / day / etc in Darkfall because it's an ADVENTURE.

You're not grinding the same quests as everyone else, moving from zone A to B, etc. What happens to you is personal, and different for each player.

I have an adventure EVERY DAY that I play. It's not just the same crap every time....I literally never know where Agon will lead me from one day to the next.

This is how an MMORPG should be, IMO.

Thanks for posting OP, a lot of us actually enjoy reading these little adventure stories :)

One other reason i think people post their 2 week +/- reviews are that they have read so much negative about the game from people who dislike the game for one reason or another and they want to set the record straight as far as they see it.

I put off trying this game for months because of negative feedback on this forum.  Come to find out, as far as im concerned, it is the best MMO on the market.

Nice write up on your first 2 weeks of experience and you appraoch game with right mind and mentality.

But its only 2 weeks i realy hope you keep playing and find as great as you think now after few months, i myself playing for almost year now and still enjoy it.

But game is also great for solo its much harder sure but its posible, becouse you always find players even in clans you become friendly with and help you out or even sometimes invite you to come with them.

The nice thing about Darkfall is you can be totally self supported and get all things you get when your in a clan.

Im solo but still got most top gear and weapons.

But for most indeed best way is find a nice clan that suit your needs and right admosphere.

Good luck in Darkfall its best free for all full loot pvp sandbox game on market.

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
