Which MMO now......Tired of WOW

BukkerzBukkerz Member UncommonPosts: 177

Have been playing WOW on and off for years, ever since it was released and have tried most common alternatives along the way so I have had the abilty to compare. I would really like to maybe play something else which by the very statement suggests I should and so feel that I might get some answers on this forum.

I played LOTRO for a while many months ago, thought it was great, the graphics were stunning with some interesting effects, only really leaving it because colleagues ether went back to or never left WOW.

I played WAR, which offered superb PVP play but hated the awful Chaos City, especially when rolling an ORC and also the loading screens when moving from one area to another or asuming fictional flight. Low populations made the game feel desolate also, which rather defeats the object of creating an alive "real" world experience.

AOC was gritty and had slick combat movements and picturesque graphical content, but again loading screens and dead manaquinn's delivering quests reminded me of the film West World. I did'nt play it for long so maybe I'm being too harsh on it, but atleast with WOW you know others are playing it.

Played COH but this did'nt float my boat atall.......

Tried Everquest 2.  Great graphics in places with wierd straight edges on others, liked the premiss but have always felt with this game particularly that I had missed the boat  and the game has gone on and developed way beyond the point of playing it from level one.

Recently looked at Fallen Earth...which is very different, mixing Third person combat with traditional MMO questing, harvesting and crafting. I wonder though how they would attract female players, not that I'm looking for a date, but again real fantasy worlds (contradiction) surely benefit from both sexes being present. I just think that Fallen Eart will ultimately be full of Mad Max's with no Maxine's.

Star Trek Online looks like something my son might play on and off on his xbox 360..

So I would be grateful for any advice or thought to which MMO other than WOW I should either re roll or maybe another game that might be worth a look.....

Trying to pin down a potential match for your taste after seeing the list you exhausted would be like trying to catch a eel in a tub full of oil. I recommend waiting until some bigger named MMOs surface later on this year. You never know what they may bring. But this current crop of games is lacking in the soul department.

Try Fallen Earth. There's plenty of women too, it's actually more feminine type of game, if you ask me. Community is relaxed and mature so doesn't matter either way.

AoC has improved a lot, you might want give it a shot as well.

  • BukkerzBukkerz Member UncommonPosts: 177

I can see your point. To which MMO's coming out this year do you refer to as I can't bring to mind any major games coming out over the next 12 months?

While you may laugh at me for saying this due to how old the game actually is, but you may want to give Final Fantasy XI a try. The game has an incredible story. The combat is brutal. Every enemy feels like a boss battle compared to WoW which makes the game very interesting. The music is top of the line. Overall I think it is the best MMORPG I have played yet. :) Worth the free trial for sure!

    FFXIV maybe?

...and you did not try Aion, did you?

  • MallahkMallahk Member Posts: 6

I´m like you, tired of wow, Aion is just another grind fest so dont put your money on it.... I´m waiting for FF XIV or Tera....By the way any news ond release dates on both those titles are welcome :)

Don't try Aion. The game makes a beautiful screensaver and that's about it. If you do play Aion expect linear character progression backed by a terrible story and some decent combat. The game had a wonderful idea however, it was executed in a horrid fashion. While you may NEVER find a twin in terms of looks, every character is the same. No variation amongst skills besides a few stigmas. So if you want to be a kick ass Spiritmaster because of your super awesome build? Keep looking.

You could try Hello Kitty Online, I'd expect lots of female players to be there.

    More seriously:

If you enjoyed LOTRO so much, I don't quite understand why you quit it when some colleagues return to WoW. Just join a guild and make new friends there.

If you dislike loading screens, try the free trial of FE. Once ingame there ain't any loading screens. Not when you enter a new area or a new sector or building or whatever. It's obviously not a game for everyone (ie not for people who like colorful cartoony stuff) but it has an open world and mature community.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

Play FFXI until FFXIV comes out.

We have a very mature and helpful community.

Get on Asura (server)--most returning and new players are joining there.

I have been in the same boat as you, and I think you perhaps need to look for a MMORPG, which is a whole other ball park than WOW. What I did was try EVE, which I enjoy immensly. Basically just find something which might not be in the fantasy-genre which you would compare too much to WOW.

I beg to differ. Maybe on the forums, but I started on Asura and switched to Bismark because of a friend and Bismark is far more populated with both /sea and in terms of seeing new people in both Bastok and Sandy :)

Thanks for replies......I suspected Aion was maybe a little pretty and shallow so did'nt jump straight in. Final Fantasy might be worth a roll even if it is a little old and might make good sense when bearing in mind a new game is on the horizon.

At present I am loading game patches and notes on both LOTRO and AOC. I  did rate LOTRO highly when it first came out, true you can't play the bad guys but the world seemed convincing and the Mines of Moria seems to be well thought of by many. I am a little worried over the lack of population in certain areas though. It would also seem that many improvements have been made with AOC or is this wrong....

Maybe I'm fooling myself into thinking WOW is a little dull and simplistic, but I really could do with a change and need something to get my largely soloist teeth sunk into.

I went through a similar phase a couple years back.  Tried EQ2, LOTRO, DDO (which was still fairly new at the time), couple others.  Ended up in EvE, of all places, still going strong.  I fired up WoW a couple months back but it just doesn't hold my attention anymore - none of the WoW-esque themeparks do, though I do think I'll give FFXIV a spin when it comes out.

EvE pisses me off sometimes (I think it does everyone...) but it doesn't railroad you like the more storyline-driven MMOs do so if I don't want to do something anymore I just go do something else.

If you want to give the trial a go PM me and I'll send you a buddy key for a 21 day trial, though most people figure out in the first week if this particular style of MMO is for them or not.

you tried a lot of newer MMO's, but none of the old ones?

You might be surprised if you played DAoC right now.  Im sure many folks who played it back in its hay-day will tell you the game is "dead", but from a new comers perspective its not really.  You'll need a guild, and not just for the social aspect.. the game is very group orientated

its definitely not the prettiest girl in school, but its still very much worth playing

DAoC has actually been on my mind lately. But, all I can remember from it back when I used to play, was endless running by foot. Got pretty fed up with that, and left.

My son intimated eagerly that LOTRO is the way to go...bearing in mind this is a lad that has headphones wedged on his head, gunning down all before him on his 360 seems a bit strange..but he's on half term holiday next week and wants to roll a possible alt....dismissive that WOW is way too simplistic. I was also considering AOC , but he immediatly disregarded it as trying to be Oblivion allowing the odd real person to run past you to give you the illusion you were in an MMO...Harsh....but  can see his point...........graphics are still extremely good though.

I've just read a thread asking the question Darkfall or AOC....having never played Darkfall (looked slightly amateurish)...is this a fair duo to make a comparison out of. Is my choice between Lord of the Rings and Conan the wrong comparison of games....

Guild Wars. They have three expansions out with a slew of great content for solo or group play. Balanced PvP (compared to the hilariously abominable World of Warcraft PvP), and plenty of things to do. Good story, nice graphics.

Darkfall isn't really similar to anything else out right now, other than maybe Mortal (which isn't really out yet). We have similar backgrounds in this genre (WoW for years, burned out, tried everything available), and you might be pleasantly surprised with Darkfall. There isn't any trial, so you might have to just do some reading on its recent changes, and upcoming changes, and make catch a YouTube video or two.

They are very different games. AoC is full of zones. The first 20 levels are done well. It is once you get out that the game becomes a zone fest. It lacks the open feel of a persistant world MMO. The melee combat is different enought that it is fun. Most of the problems with stability and content have been fixed. But it is more geared toward PvP. You can play on the PvE servers, but it ends up being the usual level grind, raid gear grind and PvP grind. The plus side is the expansion. It will be the open world that should have been at AoC's launch. But you have to play through the first 80 levels to get there once it is released if you are new. If you don't mind grinding through an ok game to get to a better one with the expansion. Then it may be worth it with the nice eye candy in AoC.

LOTRO has everything you expect in an MMO except good PvP. It has tons of content, you could play many alts and have different ways to level much of the game. Crafting is simple but can be used to make money in the economy. You can solo, small group and group your way through if you want. But the low levels will not have a big population. It is much slower as far as combat than WoW is. So this may turn you off a bit. The world is large and mostly seamless. It will continue to grow and expand all the way to Moria. So no need to worry about content. It will be there for you.

“How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?”

Same as you, played every mmo out there. The game i play now and have grown to love is Allods. At first it seem boring and confusing, but after awhile it became a breath of fresh air. Game comes out on the 16th and its F2p so if you dont like it then just delete it.

I just subbed to SWG . . . 5 years too late, but it is a sandbox and it seems pretty decent. I'm becoming a fanboy :(. There's a 14 day trial and join starstrider it has the highest population. EVE is worth a shot as well especially if you are busy.

Try Allods Online if you want.  It comes out in Open Beta on the 16th February, and has a nice new twist to it.  Astral Ships look to be loads of fun, and they are gorgeous in game!  The graphics in this game are very nice, and the music is good as well.

    The best part:  it's F2P

Do not try to be a great gamer, just be a gamer. Cause, I don't care how good you are anyway.

Im in your boat a bit. I have dabbled with a few games since WoW..

AoC, WAR, Aion, FE and ive tried to perservere with mortal online but its a bit too much like hardwork with its current state. What im doing at the moment is playing a few FPS games and testing out some trials on games. I know there are some haters of WoW but it will take some beating. For a lot of people WoW was the 1st MMO they played and the 1st experince of that genre, and how refreshing it was, do bear that in mind.
