Help me find my new MMO?

KhawngKhawng Member Posts: 10

Okay so my home MMO was SWG, which in my eyes was the PERFECT game. Sandbox world with very little instancing, nice crafting system, cool armor, and most importantly- awesome pvp. But I quit SWG about a year ago and I want to find another game to call home. It has to have:

  • (Preferably) A Sandbox world
  • Big enough Pop. so I dont feel alone
  • Cool PVP
  • In-depth classes(as in the skills/trees)
  • Nice Graphx

I remembered trying LotRO, and I liked everything about that game except for the monster play stuff. PVP is the most important factor in an MMO to me and that was kind of a cheap pvp knock-off.

I prefer not to go to WoW, too cartoony and too many little kids. meh

I'll give AoC a chance, but my last time playing it was kind of lonely and leveling was a bore.

any suggestions?

If you are asking for PvP and Sandbox, the only answers you will get are:

    Eve

    Darkfall

Now, Eve has no avatar gameplay and is considered boring by some, but supposedly very deep once you get past the steep learning curve. Could never catch my attention, tho.

Darkfall is always praised as a great sanbox game, but then again, it is very focused on PvP, tho to me that is only one (minor) aspect of a real sandbox game (sensu SWG, Ryzom). Personally don't care for cut-throat communities either, but again, that's a matter of personal preferance. Aventurine, the company behind DF, doesn't release subscriber numbers, but population is likely  medium or low, given it's niche character. Some die-hard fans will argue otherwise, emphasizing that it depends on how you play the game etc.

So in conclusion, I don't think *that* game exists. I'd go with AoC - vast improvements over the release version, I hear.

If cool armor is something you like, try City of Heroes, you design exactly how you wanna look, its a different kinda mmo, no loot system or anything, the PvP tho, not that great, but its not dead, people always playing it, I hear witht he expansion its gettin tho, the PvP is gonna get a breath of fresh air, I think Im def goin back to that mmo once the xpack hits, one of the better mmos out. But if thats not what your looking for and you want a good pvp, then try Aion, little grindy, but its a pvp oriented game. Guild Wars has a great community, One time purchase, no sub, cool armors, but not much customization. A lot of people of your class will look like you. It has a good PvP, I like the faction pvp that was introduced in GW factions. If you wanna try Age of Conan, yes the leveling is a bore, not many people at your level, hard to party, the game is gettin better as I hear, but the game seems a little linear, and just missing that one something mmos have, but you cant put your finger on it. Neither does it have cool armor I have to say. Ive played a lot more mmos but thats just a few that seem fitting for you.

You seem like the type that would probably like EVE online, I've heard that the game's pvp is unforgiving. But expect a steep learning curve, thats what made me stop playing after the trial but nonetheless if your looking for a sandbox pvp oriented game you should give EVE a try. Also it does probably have one of the better communities in the mmo genre.

P.S. the combat is point and click, which was also a big turnoff for myself but thats just me.

Honestly, if pvp is central than AoC really isn't that great of a choice.  Sure it's there...but personally not all that fun.  And getting to cap is awfully lonely.  Have you tried Darkfall?  I haven't, but according to these forums it's pretty popular.  The do have full loot which will draw a lot of the hardcore guys and less of the casual.  I enjoy WAR pvp (rvr) but they have a lacking population from t2-3.  If not they still have an endless free trial to see if it is your thing.

There is also Eve...which is also quite popular here.  It's hit or miss though.  I loathed it..but still to this day can't put my finger on why.

thanks for the quick reply. Say if i eliminate "sandbox," than what choices would you say?

Although you stated your reluctant against WoW, the pvp in there is great compared to alot of other MMOs. You also don't have to do squat in PvE in that game if all your care about is pvping..except for leveling. If still no, then WAR? i guess.

WoW is good, yes, dont no what you have against it. I dont know why its so hated by anybody that doesnt play it. Its not that its such an addictive game, its the genre, mmos. Only complaint I have with that game = worst community in any mmo ever. Its absolutely terrible. So bad to the point where if you try to even ask someone, "Where should I go to next to level up" 75% of players will probably tell you, "fuck off you low lvl newbie" or something, they either tell you that cuz they dont no the asnwer the the question, or they simply are to lazy to tell you the answer.

If you have never tried Warhammer Online before, you could give it a go, I suppose.

Personally, I never made it past the free months at release. As an oldschool DAoC vet, WAR just seemed 'flat'.

But the good thing is that the first 10 levels are now free, so as to give you a feel for the game - no harm seeing for yourself. It has some interesting qualities, for sure.

Try EvE, if you have a thick enough skin ;) Otherwise, not many PvP games around that qualify as MMOs in my book and are not generic and ultimately boring gear grinds. If you have never tried DAoC, you could give it a go - but be warned, the game is old and graphically not up to par. Community is quite friendly tho and I like both the RVR (meaningful PvP, at last) and the handcrafted feel of the world and lore.

I'm an SWG pre-CU player had a BH/MC on Bria before the dark times, before the C/U/R/B. Now I play Darkfall an open seamless world, best gear is all player crafted, FFA PvP with full loot, no levels, graphics are more realistic than anything else, population will seem small if you try to solo this is a game where you need to join a clan to get all of your enjoyment out of it,

I dont know if you have tried it yet, but Fiesta has some great areas in which you can do pvp including 8 abyss's, and 3 battle zones. They even have PVP kingdom quests where if you get into the top 3 you get experience for lvling and some kewl things like a war rant. It does have some kids running through it but a great many more are adults. Plus they have 6 servers to choose from and you can make 4 characters per server. So if you really like to pvp I would suggest you go there but of course the choice is up to you. If you want their main download page just im me or message me either way.
