[POLL] No Holds Bar Mondays - Ultima Online vs Everquest

*in radio announcer voice*

Yo yo yo! It’s the beginning of the week and I’m here to kick off a forum thread that I’ll be doing weekly called “No Hold’s Bar Mondays”. The goal is to promote healthy debate and see where we stand at MMORPG.com on fun MMO-related topics.

What will happen is that I’ll take two clearly defined sides and put up a thread here to see which side would score the most points. Of course, with every game, there have to be rules to follow:

  1. Each vote = 1 point, each post for a side = 1 point.
  2. Posts have to clearly take a side or it will not count for points. Cannot take both sides to keep the competitive spirit of things
  3. Posts have to be at least 2 sentences long and no greater than 2 paragraphs (reasonably sized). Responses need to be brief and to the point. This is a forum battle, not an essay. Any posts not within these guidelines will not count for a point.
  4. Users with 2 posts in a row by the same user will only count for 1 point. 3 in a row will be considered spamming and will disqualify the user and his/her posts for the week.
  5. Breaking forum rules will disqualify the user and his/her posts for the week.
  6. Only posts Mon-Fri will be counted for points. Votes will be recorded on Saturday morning when I start doing posts counts. Feel free to keep debating after the battle is over.

Kicking this thing off will be two giants from the past that helped pioneer and shape the MMO industry to what it is today. This first battle will be for the best nostalgic MMORPG. On one side is Ultima Online, the first successful MMORPG which paved the way for the whole genre and the other side is Everquest, one of the first major MMORPG's that utilized a 3-D environment and helped push the genre further from where it began. This is more of a battle between overall experiences past and/or present between these two well-remembered MMO’s. Keep everything quick, simple and to the point.

Ultima Online vs Everquest on best nostalgic MMORPG…Let the battle BEGIN!!!

Having played both games in the past, I can say I prefer Everquest. One simple reason was no PVP free for all in EQ. Although you did have the option of marking your character as PVP or rolling a character on a PVP server. I prefer playing PVE without anyone running around ruining my fun just for laughs.

Besides EQ had far better graphics and far more quests and things to do.

Regardless of what the poll will say, EQ is already the winner. Just look at all the mmo's that have followed both games, most resemble EQ style of advancement. Very few sandbox games exist (in fact UO is less of a sandbox than it used to be), nor reach the volume of customers that quest oriented theme parks attain. I personally preferred UO.

I still play UO. Can't say the same about Everquest.
I think for as many good things EQ brought us, it also set in motion some of what I consider bad things.

    1. Popularized instances with LDoN (in early EQ, yeah, this wasn't a problem)
    2. Set the gear grind precedent making gear take overall precedent in a character's development instead of more important things
    3. Used increasing the level cap as a bandaid for the larger problem of levels making a lot of previous content irrelevant
    4. Created the holy trinity upon which at least 80% of all current AAA MMO games base their encounters upon (tank, healer, dps)

Also, I agree with the poster above me. Popularity wise, it's already over. Who knows though? Maybe it'll turn out to be more competitive than I thought.

edit: Uh, I get a point for voting - but do I get a point for being against a side? :P

Everquest, that game was the best. Before SOE took it over from Verant and ruined everything about it.  But still, EQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still have never found another mmo that could captivate me for as long as eq1 did.

WOW, if EQ captivated you more than our 79 hours on AoC this week then you must have really played the heck out of it!

    Cheers!    =D

I'm curious to see if there are people that actually played both UO and EQ and preferred one over the other. My assumption is that a sizable group of people started with UO (probably because there was few options in terms of a graphical world like this one) and then another group followed at EQ. How many people out there actually has played both? Would some be more inclined towards UO due to the lack of sandboxes in this day and age?

I quit EQ once. I have quit UO about 6 times. Every time they announce some new change or expansion, I think about coming back again.

Both games were good in their own right, I just enjoyed UO a bunch more. But to this day I feel the biggest mistake MMO developers ever made was copying the EQ model rather than the UO model. And, I dont mean graphics.

Both have crazy nostalgic value for me, but in the end I think EQ wins out just because the 3D setting made it feel more like a "place" and while UO had its set of memorable music (including the haunting intro) EQ was cram packed with music you just didn't forget. EQ actually makes me miss midi )=

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

The results are in the results are in and the winner is:

    EVERQUEST

Won with a total of 24 points (20 votes and 4 posts) out of a total of 32 votes (mine doesn't count) and 7 actual posts.

Ultima Online lost with 15 points (12 votes and 3 posts).

Sure, it may not be the greatest start in terms of these polls, but I hope it adds a little more fun. To try and keep it going (or encourage more people), provide any ideas or suggestions to what you would like to see in terms of a topic. It has to have 2 definite sides and compete over 1 common goal i.e. Best Fantasy MMORPG or Best Soundtrack MMORPG etc. I would like to try and open it up to include interesting topics that more people would care about more. None of the negativity please because no matter what, I'm still looking to keep it going (yes, Interesting, if you have nothing nice to say, please stay out of it). Thanks for playing and look for it again next Monday.

(Yes I did cut it short since my girlfriend is coming into town tonight and I would not be able to do this tomorrow. Generally, expect it to end on Saturday morning though).

They are very different games, and probably shouldn't be compared.  How do you compare an open world game against a level based game?

This is like comparing Call Of Duty:Modern Warfare2 and Mass Effect 2.  They are both shooters you argue?  That is where the similarity ends.

Also, if you want to compare do so in a pro's and con's list.  Take opinions of people who have lots of experience in both games.  As is, I'd vote for UO.  I never played EQ.  This is nothing more than a popularity contest.

And that's all I'm really looking for is to see which was more popular. It's more out of curiosity to see where MMORPG forum users stand in terms of two defined sides.

This isn't some unbiased study on the impacts of the two oldest MMORPG's on the genre. This was merely for fun. Hence the tones I take in the writing and the looseness of everything. You see a lot of threads here where people try to take both sides of various things (which is perfectly fine), but I think it would be more interesting if we were forced to pick 1 or the other side from time to time and see how everything pans out.

Both games don't have to be theme park or sandbox to be able to vote based on preference even if the person hasn't tried both games, there was some decision made where they chose not to play EQ or UO despite its respective popularity.

So yes, you are right, it is nothing more than a popularity contest and whatever is wrong with that?

In that case absolutely nothing :)  I look forward to what's on the agenda for this Monday!  I vote you put Pokemon and WoW in the arena.

I voted EQ because its actually a 3D game, not isometric like UO. May not make that much difference to some, but its the main reason I never bothered with UO.

Maybe so, but I'm sure there are reasons you didn't try Everquest, right? You can compare two completely different things as long as there are things to compare i.e. graphics, gameplay, community

I agree.  The market emulated EQ much more than UO due to demand.  However, I loved UO and it gets my vote.  There was nothing like it during it's time and the risk was always in the game, I loved the gritty feel and the having to scrap for every little thing.

I never tried EQ because by the time I lost interest with UO EQ2 was coming out.  I did try that, but ended with playing WoW.  I feel much more immersed in a 2d iso world in general, especially one that I can move stuff around in.  If I drop a katana, someone might pick it up later and use it for weeks.  Stuff like that doesn't happen in 3d games.

Obviously it has to be UO.

As good a game as it was, EQ was the starting point that kicked off the whole linear ride thing that is the cancer killing the mmo now. I disapprove of the movement to compromise and belittle the awesome potential of mmos as interactive, living, breathing worlds by the narrow-minded aspiration to turn the game into a movie.
