That isn't a true sense of battling over contested zones or planets.. that is using a weight scale on battle ground.. That would be like jury riggin it.. but oh well..
Ofc that is the true sense of battleing over planets or even entire solar systems. It makes sense that conquering a entire bunch of planets wouldnt happen in five 20vs20 battles, one per planet each. No, hundreds of ships would have to be destroyed, that its not happening all in one place but in hundreds of medium sized battles all over the systems, maybe even over several days and with different tactical objectives(supply depots, temporary ship rapair stations etc), would make it feel apropiatly epic. That no big fleets are getting used would be explained by the sneaky feds/klingons having spread their tactical assets too thin, if we where to attack one in force they would simply move the others, so youre needed to hit them all at once. Instead of numbering the instances 1-xy they could even get codenames like location gamma-3xv and randomly change the background(this is already done i think atleast with objects), to give us the illusion we are not in an instance of the same attack, but actually in an attack in another location that simply happens at the same time.
But yeah i always was one of those who felt cheated that you could loose a keep in warhammer faster than you could run from the flightpoint to the keep to defend it, so maybe its just me.
This game can never have just 1 instance.. It would crash and burn in the first 3 seconds when 10,000 people try to enter it.. LOL This is why games like WoW and EQ have servers.. It's not perfect, because nothing is, but it's something that Cryptic engine can NEVER offer.. a persistent world that evolves and grows..
Instancing 100% of the game is cheap and quick.. but it limits what you can and can not do.. Sorry.. The only thing I see that is possible is keeping the current PvP system and find a way to keep a tally of wins and losses, and use those numbers to offer buffs and perks to one side or the other.. However I wouldn't call that a persistent world, it's just a score keeping system
You know, just cause you cant think of a way to do it doesnt mean it cant be done. It could be done by a simple adaption of the way scenarios added to region control in warhammer(those scenarios where instances too). Imagine you have this region in STO, lets call it a pve map, its exactly like the neutral zone and has 25 instances.
Now in this "new" neutral zone there would be planets you can fly too for pvp, which would be called skirmishes. Winning or loosing skirmishes contributes to the wareffort, if for example the klingons keep winning they push Feds back on the pve map, and i mean in ALL instances of the pve map, it would globally affect the map. The control would slowly slide to the faction who is winning most skirmishes.
The whole shebang could be as persistant as the players want it to be, there is no technical reason not to permanently grant the winning side control over stations/planets/extra juicy exploration areas(that only the current owner has access to) for as long as they keep repelling the enemy in those scenarios. The scenarios could even change depending on wether the objective is currently held or neutral.
So you see its actually very simple to mix persistance and instances. This is possible because the fighting and the space your fighting over are technically not in the same instance. Eve did a similar thing with sovereignity, just instead of counting the towers in a system in STO we would count the number of lost/won skirmishes and change the gameworld accordingly.
Maybe even steal some idea from Aion, and have borg/undine flood the zone randomly, resetting everything. but thats obviously optional.
Edit: TLDR version: Dont change instances individually but all at once. Faction that wins in most instances pushes the frontlines in ALL instances. Process would be very slow so it doesnt break immersion if you dont see a sudden shift after winning/loosing a single battle.

Milk the customer base for as long as possible, as much as possible. CO is atrocious, and I did enjoy the time I spent with STO, but if it's as incomplete as I hear I have reservations on playing it beyond doing some good-will testing in beta.
You know who's to blame for this. Cryptic might have been slow with updates to CoH, but they didn't get super greedy until CO started the final phases of development.
Tbh i had the same reservations, and i wouldnt touch CO with a ten foot long pole, but imho STO is receiving first class treatment from cryptic, while CO is ... well not. They already released 2 patches, and even already added new content. They talk the talk the same way warhammer devs did, but they actually delivered stuff only 2 weeks after release. There is even a interview in which the lead dev explictly said they will adress issues the community has, and i believe them, not cause im gullible, but because they already payed part in advance so to speak.
They will even address the corkscrew sillyness, and add a klingon battlecruiser in T2 which is currently missing horrible, and it was specifically said that they will bring the kind of content we want, which only makes sense if you think about it. Now think about that, how long it took for warhammer to add another class/dungeon/scenario, and how fast cryptic is moving. Sure its easier to add a spaceship, but the important thing is people see a company willing to adress issues the playerbase has in such a timely manner as i have never before witnessed. Which sadly isnt much of a compliment due to how horrible MMORPG companys usually are at this.
And yeah its already paying off, cause i wouldnt be here defending cryptic if i wouldnt see them changing stuff, cause i definitly agree that STO has a long way to go yet, but imho its already on the way.
I think you are on to something. I was almost convinced Rydeson was right, but looking at, and understanding what you wrote makes sense and seems doable, for what Cryptic has available. Only time will tell if Cryptic will add some type of PVP control to the game. Something needs to happen in the game, PVP-wise, once they get the Klingon faction fleshed out.

Personally i think cryptic would do it, if enough of the current playerbase wants it. And since we have a whole faction dedicated to mostly pvp, i hope that we will have enough pvpers pushing issues like this and demanding "their" content.
Realistically seen cryptic wont care one bit what kind of content they have to work on, aslong as it creates more revenue and keeps people subscribed, historically a solid base of pve and a fun pvp system is the best way to keep subscribtions.
Adding a ship isn't going make this rudimentary third person shooter any more complete or less mundane than it is now. imho, this game is in such disrepair and was so substantially neglected to remotely resemble anything that either meets or exceeds an mmorpg game in 2010, its sad.
The forgiveness and misplaced understanding of anything left of the market for this game and anything Cryptic will continue to puzzle me.
Why do game developers insist on dissing my crafting grind?!! This is how it's gonna work, see. 95% of the people go die 1,000,000,345,456,789,099,999 times because they are use to playing console, mashing buttons while intoxicated, and using the gear they wake up with as a hang-over solution. And 5% of us, go find, read, and make stuff the OTHER half can use when while drunk they deleted their stuff on accident and the GM doesn't care to respond from India because they have a christian name and that's against the law there. rofl
I heard the graphics are worse than Eve so they can keep the latency and system requriements down. y/n?
You heard wrong.
The graphics in STOL are better than Eve and so are the effects. STOL is all together more cinematic and action based then Eve. And Eve is 1000s times deeper and tactical then STOL.
I recall killing a Klingon bird of Prey in STOL, It was flying past me as my phasers hit it, you could see the damage across its hull and as I hit for the last time, it slowed to a stop and then burst into a big explosion, very cinematic.
As you fire your distrutors cannons you can see them tracking your targert, they shoot forht from your ship and then as they near the target they start to curve to wards it. Again very cinematic, that with all the shield boosting and other speical skills all have graphically effects. Nothing like that in EVE.
And graphics of the ships are more or less the same, but the space in STOL looks better and has more objects in.
Also I heard that STOL does not have full 3d Space before istarted playing it, but it does, the only thing you cannot do is go vertically upwards or downwards.

Just out of curiosity, what was the last big mmorpg hit for you? Its not like there is any competition thats not atleast 5 years old to compare to STO you know. And when was the last mmorpg launched that was more complete than this?
When will people learn that their expectations are unreasonable and impossible to meet? You will get burned by every single mmorpg to ever get released if you buy into hype or expect it to be anywhere near polished within a month after release. Its just not economically viable to develope MMOs till they are perfect.
It's amazing to see so many similarities to SWG in the forums..
If they do this......
If they do that.....

If they change that......
Guess what people.. So many are still defending this game based on HYPE...Still living the dream... The fact is that in STO current form, it's mediocre in my opinion and most others as well, including many MMO game reviewers.. If Cryptic came out today saying the game is "AS IS" and we aren't changing it, how many of you supporters would still be playing in 3 months? I suspect that 95% would be GONE by then.. Look at what the game is NOW in it's current forum and if you wish to defend the game, which you have the right to do, please so without hype and dreams of what isn't..
I'm max level atm (Rear Admiral 5) and there is a reason to PvP - Daily quest PvP badges.
You get 5 PvP badges per day if you complete the PvP quest and 5 PvE exploration badges if you complete the daily PvE explore quest.
Those badges are the only ones you can use to by the epic items at K7.
All the ship energy weapons are Anti-proton which has a hidden proc that ignores shields and damages the hull directly.
There is also a massive torp weapon that has a 60 sec cooldown but it's a gimmic item. Far too slow to use except in rare moments of opportunity.
Unfortunately it's going to be another month before we can see a progression of any real content. You hammer through the borg stuff fairly fast and are left with long PvP queues (for now) and just getting more non-epic badges for green gear.
I plan on making a Klingon side character while I wait for the main Klingon players to catch up to us Fed admirals.

I would disagree with the highlighted statement. Eve is deeper in the things you can do, I won't deny that at all, but tactical wise, not really. Once you know what mission your doing, you simply armor and weapon up for that mission with the appropriate items and go in and do the same thing you do in STO, with the exception of, in Eve, you can do it farther out then you can in STO. So while there may be a "little bit" more tactics in Eve, its definitely not 1000 times better.

you high as a kite, the combat elements of eve are 10,000 time better, you have shor range mid range longe range weapons, aoe weapons, fighters, tracking disruptions, sensor jamming if a fleet as a bumch of sniper ships you can try to manuver your covert op into a position and then have a short range bs group jump and then have interceptior tackle them.
ceratin ships are armor tanks or shield tanks they can be activly or pasivly tanked, active or passive reistances.
you can have stealth bomber fleets appear out of no where and destroy them.
In STO all weapons have the same range yah, no death penalty so who cares about tanking yah.

I was referring to the PVE side of things in Eve. Yes in group dynamics things are very different in the pvp side. But considering I dont pvp in STO, I really dont care. At least in STO, you have true control of your ship instead of simply setting an orbit distance or a stay at distance and firing away. The funny thing about Eve's pve side is that all that stuff you mentioned that you could do, is basically worthless in a pve mission. It all boiled down to tanking and having the right load out for the current enemy you were fighting.

you can have stealth bomber fleets appear out of no where and destroy them.
