Why would anyone drop $1,000 on a proc when its near equivalent is half that? You're not going to get much of a performance difference. And even if you have the money. You would be better off dropping it on something else. To me the "Extreme" series was always "Extremely" overpriced. It's like buying an 8 piece chicken for $20 when you can get a 7 piece for $10 and use the extra $10 for some sides and a drink. Sorry for the crappy comparison. I just woke up and I'm hungry for some Popeyes.

Because when you have the performance crown you can sell chips that came out better for a premium and people will buy them.
As with any hobby, they're for the die hard enthusiasts.
Extreme processors are the highest quality chips (meaning high overclocking potential) with unlocked multipliers. This may not mean much for you, but there's people out there that are willing to pay for the unlocked multiplier alone.
I don't think I'm that "die hard" about ANY of my hobbies. Well..........maybe anime at some point. I used to drop about $250 to $300 a week on DVD's. So around $1000 a month. Had a wall full of them. But I guess it's like someone buying a Lambo or Ferrari. To each his own. But I don't think anyone will ever use it at maximum OC for ANYTHING. At stock settings it will handle everything with no hitches.

Expand your mind a little bit and think of other applications of PC's than just gaming. What about people that overclock competitively? Or people that compete in distributed computing? Thats just two quick examples off the top of my head where these top end chips are used.
Still, he's right. It is a waste of money.
Wether you can afford it or not, its still a waste
The value of the extra performance is relative, in gaming it may only mean an extra frame or two; however, in video production or 3d graphics rendering, it can cut production times down significantly over a relatively short period. It would pay to remember that pc's are tools and their use extends far beyond simple gaming platforms, for many the extra performance easily out ways the cost, as it is recovered within a day or two of use.

op!on this subject your absolutelly right!
as long as the proc you buy from intel support direct cashe access your good enough speed as been stuck for a while now
check eq2 and war both benefit from speedy proc .but the top proc when eq2 luncged was the p4 3.4 etreeme serie
if you got one of those sitting or being used by your kid ?you go try that p4 3.4 exrtreme on eq2 you will not have slower or faster gaming perfomance it will be almost the same.
those monster proc arent usefull for the average user ,even the gamer
do you have an application that run 4 core at the same time.hell check my old x2 4200 the work load the best i could come up with topped it at 35 %i could ony use 35 % so those new proc they ll just be used even less like 20 or so
the hardware evolve but games dont design it for them
check scifi from blizzard being betaed!they support p4 system do you honestly think they made heavy use of double core techno or quad core!hell no
so an i7 is gona be good to supply game to the user like eve online ,aika ,etc but thats it all the other can
get their p4 out and game almost all game!
Exactly. Even in 3-D rendering or multiple applications, if you compare the highest end i7-975 Extreme to the i7-950, you will not notice much of a difference as BOTH will suffice more than enough. As for competing, I would rather see an i7-920 and an i7-950 reach high OC's. It's not really fun if you try to soup up a Lamborgini as it is ALREADY fast enough. Seeing a stock sports car getting beefed up to similar acceleration and top end to an exotic and overly expensive car, is more exciting competitively. But everyone is entitled to an opinion and that is just mine. So IMO, the "Extreme" proc is more/less for bragging rights.

i7 Extreme CPU has unlocked clock multiplier. Intel agrees to let you cook the chip if you pay twice. Since you have enough money to burn, you probably won't cheat on them.
Extreme CPUs are meant for people that want to push the limits of the tech. Think liquid N2 cooling and people that want to say, I have that.
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.
In 3D Rendering you don't use an Extreme processor. Its still a waste of money. Instead you get a dual socket designed board or a 6/8/12 core Xeon or Opteron processor. Same costs but significantly faster in productivity then a Core i7 extreme.
Probably my last post today. But I have 1 Quad processor. No need for 7 right now. I run everything at blazing speed

Get out of your box already...
Socket 1366 is better than the i5's/1156 socket because the 1156 socket cpu's have a media chip thingmajig, and the 1366's don't, so you wont be limited to the speed of the chip, unlike the latter.
So, there you have it. But I still wouldn't buy an extreme, I'd buy a i7 920.
The 975 is designed more for server based systems. First off, it has 8 megs of cpu cache which is wouldn't really be noticed much in games. Secondly, it has an amazing QPI rate which means in multiprocessor systems and enterprise class raids with write-back caching are going to gain massive speed benefits.
Its a hobby .Just like cars and houses and whatever.
Like any product on this earth there are people who want only the best there is to offer even if they cannot make use of the full potential of it .
My brother drives a bmw x5 and only uses it in the city .Its a total waste espically if you factor in fuel but hey its his love .
I too looked into the i7 when buying my new laptop and did not see what i would use the extra punch for as there is no game around that seems to over task my old core2 and the i5 is on par/better with the best of the core2.
becuse I can? easy as that.

Most Intel CPUs are a waste of money for the computer gamer.
Why?
Because most of it is handled by the graphics card.
So you don't need the Core i7 with it's four cores for computer gaming.
A Core 2 Duo will do the job just fine and you will not notice any difference.
Stop wasting your money on the CPU and instead spend them on the graphics card.
I'm using a Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.0Ghz but the cheaper Core 2 Duo E7400 or E7500 is also fine.
The E7000 series hadn't been released to the market yet when I bought my E8400.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
Im with you that the most expensive cpu isnt needed when you only want to play games.
Just one of many tests: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/radeon-hd5870-cpu-scaling_4.html#sect1

Just picked up an i7 930 past weekend, coming from a 9450 and E8400 very happy. I do other stuff as well as game, like that is what you buy a PC for.
Video rendering times are nearly half.
See I would deem your spending $1,000 on anime to be worth much less than the Extreme CPU. So, like you said, to each his own and to some that is the Extreme CPU.
or you could just get a AMD Phenom II BE for significantly cheaper with an unlocked multi... esp if it is just for gaming..
video editing/rendering.
For games a i5 - 750 will do just fine for some years to come, no need to go crazy just because it is top - notch.
Im an AMD guy.
So, If my comp. is only for gaming. period
You recommend an AMD Phenom II BE?
I have an AMD 4200 dual core 2.2ghz and my Mobo is damaged. Everything is still working right now.
What radeon video card do you recommend I replace my Radeon 3780 with also,I only run a 27" LCD monitor on it.
Thx

I've always found this website pretty helpful, and the link I posted is a comprehensive article showing the best current graphics card for each price bracket.
