I love Babylon 5, it's probably the best crafted SF TV show ever.

But face it, it's just not that popular.

Actually not.  You are describing a two faction game.  We all know that two faction games fail when it comes to pvp.

Well, in a couple of shows they had the Vorlorns vs. the Shadows vs. the younger races.

But a game set in a Babylon 5 world doesn't need to be two factions or even three factions. Within just the human race there was the military, then a splintered group of the military that joined with Sheriden and had a nice little civil war. Then theres the Psi-Corp, random rouge groups, the Mars rebillion people. Then there are the other races and any splintered groups from that.

I think it would be neat if they made a Babylon 5 MMO, but you just choose your race (and maybe if you were psychic or not) and you can choose your "factions" as you go.

IP doesn't matter too much. Implementation is what matters. Using big name IPs is just asking to be let down.

    Book to movie?

    Game to movie?

Entertainee vision typically does not match up with entertainer vision. Often, there are technical issues to achieve the vision of the target audience. The other problem is wasting development money on big name IP. This money could go into actually developing systems and world building for the game itself instead of grandiose ideas in someone's head of what might be given unlimited funds and time.

As far as Babylon 5. Do we need another in your face good vs evil setting? Also, we all know the ending. It won't be nearly as exciting as the show with the unfolding story as we learn the tidbits of info of what is actually going on. That isn't to say that a new and more interesting story couldn't be built on top of the existing story, but this is wishful thinking.

It may be a perfect idea for a setting, but implementation is EVERYTHING.

Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.

They had input from their fans at NASA who thought that the physics of the Furies was scientifically accurate and the best they had ever seen in science fiction shows.  It is also perfectly plausible to do something in this universe.  There are oodles of stories yet to be told in that universe it does not need to fall in the 2258-2262 period.  It could be the Earth-Minbari war, it could be the war from 1000 years prior to the series events, it could be the empire building of the younger races afterward, or a story of the Rangers.  Tons o possibilities if there was the will and money to make it happen and do it justice.

... but that would require Vision which this industry pretty much entirely lacks at the moment.

B5 would make a great EVE-like MMO. Strategic / Simulation / Diplomacy rather than your typical fare of RPG.

I can think of 20 great IPs for MMOs.

The problem isn't lack of existing IPs or lack of ability to creat original IPs.  The problem is making a good game.  There have been excellent existing IP games made (LoTRO, SWG, AoC, WoW) and there have been total garbage ones (D&D, STO, the upcoming BSG game that you just KNOW will be terrible, etc.).  There have also been excellent original games made (EQ, DaOC, EVE, AC, CoH etc.)  and bad original games (Dark & Light anyone?  Vanguard, countless other titles).

So really, the only conclusion I can draw from experience with these games is that IP doesn't make your game any better or worse.  You still have to make a good game.  IP just gives you a marketing edge and raises user expectations - it's a double-edged sword that way - but it doesn't make it any easier to develop a good game.

The amount of control and supervision JMS would require makes this a non-starter - unless he did it himself.  And that would be high comedy - this is someone who was mixing it up on the Internet in the 90s.  He'd lose it early and often in the position of MMO bigwig image
