So something random broke my concentration and I can not think of this word. I know it starts with an E or I.

For an example, in basketball when the guard is coming down the court and he can't do his play because the other team snuffed it out; so he had to ____________ on a broken play to make it work.

Ugh I feel stupid because I can't think of it.
