Canada to get 1000mbps Internet. (1Gbps)

AmazingAveryAmazingAvery Age of Conan AdvocateMember UncommonPosts: 7,188

Shaw Cable based mainly in Western Canada and Hamilton, Ontario.

Gigabit ports on my router, gigabit ports on my switches, gigabit ports on my desktop, all I need now is a gigabit internet connection and my whole network would be gigabit. lol.

Trialing it out this year, and I am going to get on the list, can't wait. I wonder what kind of modem/hardware will be out as there is nothing on the market that does this yet.

Google also announced plans recently too for the US.

Think I still have my 9.6k modem haha :) How times change.

I already run 100mbps, and enjoy the faster speed when patching mmo's, can't think of something 10 times faster still...

We have this already in Portugal for like 6 months now. Almost the entire country is already covered in fiber optics, and I think other european countrys are covered too...

The average connection over here nowadays its between 50Mbps and 100Mbps

    www.zonfibra.pt/#/net/net-ate-1-giga/

Its expensive ofc, 249 euro month

    What's the point?

I just downgraded from 10mbps to 8mbps, because I hardly ever even max out my 10mbps even sharing it with my wife. It's rare that I actually download anywhere close to 1MBps, most sites cap out around 300-500.

Your speed doesn't effect your ping to games, once you get past the 1mbps or so. So what's the point of getting insane speeds, really? Do you really download that much stuff and where are you getting this stuff that comes anywhere close to your cap?

I'm not jealous, if I was... do you think I would have downgraded my connection speed this month? Grats I guess to the Candians.

Hey that ZON stuff looks interesting, using DOCSIS 3.0 modem (which I have already). How come they don't show up here? http://speedtest.net/global.php#0,3,54

249euro is quite expensive haha! for 100mbps for normal customer is equivilent to about 100Euro here in Canada. (but I get special staff pricing)

Have to remember though, in Canada a lot of the country has frozen ground for long periods making the fibre laydown lengthy process.

Canada is like the United States when it comes to logistics problems only worse.  Too much space, too little people.  Where most places in Europe and East Asia are clumped up, in North America property is usually built out.  Getting broadband across the continent, over the mountains, and to the rural communities is a major milestone.  So it seems odd that thanks to Google, North America will have the fastest internet.  Parts of the US are starting to rollout with 100~300Mb/s connections, so definetly a jump.  I am on a 30Mb/s connection so big jump.

There is a minor problem however.  The transfer speeds are higher then what HDDs can handle.  It will certainly be interesting how the infrastructure adjusts.

The price for 100mb here is around 60 euro, I pay 50 for a 50mb connection and I get this results:

I use that ZOn company, also know as TVCabo since its also of of the main suppliers of cable tv over here.

And they are there Avery, its TVCabo, the problem is that many ppl dont want to py more and have the 10 and 20 connections, so the average dont go up for now, but many ppl are already changing since the prices are going down

There is going to be a big push for 3D TV over the next year or two, watching movies online like at hulu, netflix and other sites on the rise streaming them speed will come in, digital delivery of games is a big one, I have about 15 games DL from D2D - as well as bandwidth (sticky point) Not to mention developments in getting this streamed in the home other than conventional methods.

The internet is no longer a place to look at static text and pictures. The internet has become the long-predicted digital convergence medium: it is a television, radio, and of course a computer, all in one. At least, it’s trying to be.

When you download a file from a website, your download speed will be limited to their upload speed these are always changing and business and dedicated servers are always getting faster.

Caps don't bother me and never come close to it. I have 400GB bandwidth p/month at the moment. My previous packages were 25mbps and 15mbps with a respective 150 and 100GB allowance. I live in a home with 4 internet users, 3, including myself are quite heavy users (gamers). Usually I use near 40GB per month. If I want to watch HD movies online like from hulu (who are coming to Canada soon) that is like just 2 movies a month and a wait for the thing to load like dial up on a 1080p youtube 10 min movie. Going to need the speed.

On the old 15mbps I have we used to see slow down if we were all gaming at the same time. I also wanted the freedom say, to DL a movie at the same time, or patch another game or both without the slow down.

    Couple examples.

I downloaded ST:O in about 10 mins - whole game, same with DF.

I also may want to stream HD content around the home too and need the ability to do that.

I update for AoC on the test server a lot, now I wait couple mins for update patch instead of an hour.

    Time is precious hehe.

I see my expectations increase as things progress and I understand my situation may be one that is not a common one but it will be in a few years for most.

Competition is good as forces the price down for the consumer. You can get 7.5mbps here for as little as $10 p/m for 1st year and about $30 thereafter with 60GB cap.

We don't have monthly caps here.

But, I can see the use for having those speeds if everyone was on them. But, the US isn't even pushing 100Mbps yet, much less 1Gbps. I know alot of Europe isn't around that yet either. Hell, 7 or 8 years ago when most of Korea was running 40Mbps, most of Europe and the US were still running on dial-up.

I mean, I can see the purpose in it for the future. But, right now it's like buying a $5000 3D Animator Card to play games with, or buying an Alienware computer. Just something to say "Hey........ look what I got!" I'm really not trying to be a downer here, but it just seems kinda pointless to me.

Streaming HD content around the home is fine, a wireless N is 100mbps, even G @ 54mbps is fine for streaming HD content. But, that has nothing to do with the internet speed. Blue Ray is 19.4Mbps.

Aye, as long as its fast enough to download a particular sort of 'entertainment' on demand its all happy days. Saying that, Magnet entertainment do a low ping to popular game servers service in Ireland now. Shame its mostly to shitty PC FPS and XBOX live servers and outside my area.

    Jam is sticky.
