There is definitely good feedback here. I have worked at several sites in the past and can tell you this. In terms of giving players a voice on the forums, MMORPG.com is the most open. I have seen many other site mods delete posts and users for their negativity without a chance.
Content wise, we walk a fine line here. In terms of articles and features from the developers directly things are a bit tight right now. MMOs have seen their slump and lets face it no dev wants to talk about a game they know sucks. Several games have launched in the last few years that have bombed and studios are trying to regroup.
That is no excuse in my opinion. The trend right now has been to try and make money in free to play. MMO games that are being developed are under the crushing weight of publisher deadlines who want to make money, hence the trend in pre-orders, life-time subscriptions, and free-trials.
Since returning here in July I have found studios and publishers much harder to talk too and work with, why? Because they are not willing to say bad things about their games. They cannot, if they do marketing and legal have a fit and the person loses their job. In an industry that has seen a ton of lay offs in recent months, people are doing all they can to hold onto their jobs right now.
So what do we do? I will work harder to ask the tough questions absolutely.
Jon and I are going to GDC in March and PAX East. If you guys have questions, we'd be happy to ask them.
I'll include our schedule in the staff blog next week
It has to do with the management of the site/community.
Biased views on subjects, blatantly trying to change how we think, telling us how we should feel or react.
The criteries used to define wich game should or should not be on this site.
Each time I log on I see more absurd things, either on abusive ads, biased editorial content, giving your backs to the genre.
The game list for example, listing Browser games? RTS games? Text based games? You guys should have stopped this with Guild Wars and now its out of control. Has no credibility anymore. MMORPG.com washed its hands, closed its eyes, and then they try to create an ilusion that "couldnt have done anything". But in the end, you guys benefitted from the revolution.
What we all see is that games with $ get their stuff pushed here, regardless of how absurd they are and we only see the Staff defending and creating excuses, trying to justify their existance here. Arbitrariety. Ive seen the criteries change dozens of times based on $ interest. A game with big investment, nothing to do with MMORPGs, "fuck it, lets add it anyway, more money for us".
MMORPG.com trying to embrace everything, to do too much, lost its identity, lost its appeal.
"Oh, its the market, its too slow [thats why you guys are bored and started messing where you shouldnt]".
Its like watching Beyond Citizen Kane all over again.
I've been here for years, but rarely post. I still find this to be "the" site for game info., opinions, good or bad, some humor and a little fun. Seems to be the same as it was when I first signed up.
I think it is much better than it used to be. I find I am coming on much more often to read the new articles.
My only complaint is the same as some people previously have said - too many games are listed - it is too confusing now. I am, like many others, currently trying to find a new game (after getting badly burnt financially by ftp Atlantica - my own fault!) and I am struggling to make sense of all the games here - are they any good or not? Worth a go or save my time?
I notice today that more new games are listed, and nearing completion. Just too many
Having some sort of quality control baseline would be great, but I expect that would be difficult to implement.
Anyway, keep up the good work with the regular columns, really enjoying them

I read massively more now myself also, and really just come here for the forums anymore. Main reasion behind this is massively's news updates are 3/4 to 1 to mmorpgs.com news post anymore.

Hi All, So....................... I look at a couple of forums........ MMO"RPG" (Am an old Dice and paper player of RPG....) games "seems" to be the future of gaming..... Not so sure here...... So I am wondering if www.mmorpg.com has taken the judas coin route here.... Let nothing bad be said about those who place advert here.... Now I place adverts in my trade press and you would be AMAZED about what goes on in printed press and I wonder if the same thing is happening here?

I guess what point I was trying to make was everyone has a different or biased opinion. Weather they like to admit it or not so to implement a quality system would be unfair. What is a quality game ? Graphics ? Least buggy ? Also MMORPG's evolve who knows the game you hate with a passion could release some expansion or patch that makes it awesome. Also who are MMORPG.com to decide on what is a good game and what is not because no matter how you look at it for every 1000 who hate a game another 5000 will be right there to disagree.
When I don't have a game to play, or anything on my radar, I'll come here to see what game people are buzzing over. That's why I like this site better than any other. That's why this is the only MMO news site I come to, and the only MMO related site that I have been a frequent visitor of for almost five years.
The columns and articles are sometimes funny, sometimes controversial but almost always well written. The news is as up to date as any other site, and I find it as easy if not easier to get access to as anywhere else.
As for the ads, well hell, you can't keep a site up and running without income. They could put Mountain Dew ads on the site and I wouldn't care, just as long as they aren't sucking up all the bandwidth or cluttering things so much I can't find what I'm looking for.
One suggestion I might have would be to split up the game list into different pages based on whether they are F2P or P2P and whether they are in development or release. Because wow, that is a long list going on there.

That does help a bit. Especially when looking for a game in beta. *smacks himself in the head for not noticing it before.* Though it doesn't help a whole lot when looking through the released games as there are still a ton of those.
Do you guys go through on a regular basis to see if some of those games are still running?

Users are quick to let Mike know when something is listed wrong.
Now consider, discussions of those games (hype) were likely started taking place roughly 2 years before actual release. And then factor in the games that never got realized like Gods And Heroes and the Original Star Trek, some games that are fading away like The Agency as well as those that got shut down like The Sims Online and Tabula Rasa.
My point is that most of the conversation fodder really took place a few years back and there has't been a whole lot leading up to late 2009 and 2010 in the way of The Next Big Thing Yes, people talked alot about Star Trek but no one christened it a WoW Killer. Sure there's been controversy in the swg and darkfall forums but that has even fizzled. At this point, it seems like the only sustainable conversation topic, if you can call it that, is speculation on SW:ToR.
And for an mmo site that is focused on community, since serving up the news isn't too unique and, in some cases not even the preferred site, the lack of stuff to talkabout in the industry could be taking its toll. In that respect, I do give mmorpg.com credit for pushing out far more articles and commentaries on the state of the industry. Unfortunately, they seem to be a bit shallow at times, often too short and occasionally downright poorly written and unsubstantiated. If this is to be the new focus of mmorpg.com to retain its community, then it really needs to set the bar higher.
mmorpg.com doesn't exist because of its editorial content. it exists because of the community.
I would challenge that...
All companies exist by their incoming cashflow vs their expenses.
All I see is that when a new game is launched that for every person that posts a critical post to a game there is a very quick reponse saying hoe good t he game is.
And on every page I click there seems to be a host of ad's for the latest games......
Do the figures - 346 so called MMO's - MMORPG has 1.17M members
Thats only 3386 per game ???
If there are now 1million + register mmorpg.com would be dead so yes i agree on guy saying mmorpg.com exist becouse of community seems not so hard to understand right:P

I prefer Massively for MMO news, I just come here to read stupid forum posts by hardcores and fanboys.
Why do you prefer our competitors? I can't speak for the other aspects of our site, but as I do the news I'd be interested in any feedback you guys have on how I could improve the newsroom to be more appealing.
The only reason I still visit mmorpg.com is because of the community. I usually don't read the editorial content and the reason for that is that they are, at least in my opinion, not very interesting. There is too much talk about the genre in general and not enough about the actual games. When I come to a website about mmorpgs, I want to read about the actual games. Instead, we get features about microtransactions and player housing and all kinds of other subjects that we have already discussed so many times on the forums. I want to hear experiences about the actual games. What do you think about this new feature? How did this game improve over the years? stuff like that. Not just about the most popular mmorpgs, but also talk about the lesser known and played mmorpgs. There are so many good mmorpgs that barely get any attention from mmorpg.com.
I feel mmorpg.com spends too much time on the most popular upcoming and released games and not enough time on games that are not as anticipated. Look at games like TERA or Continenth of the Ninth. Yes, I know there isn't a lot of information about these games, but there is enough to wirte an article or to give an impression.

I find that Massively "breaks" MMO news stories more then MMORPG.com. I also enjoy that there site has the "news" on the homepage and its not as cluttered.
There is also the fact that there site does more MMORPG community stories. Goonsquad recently disbanded in Eve and they had a whole story about it on the front-page.

Exactly this is the reason to empower Pub general forum again.
Stop moving treads to related forums. When people come to the site - they go directly to PUB to see whats the buzz, whats the news.
And well - about massively
They have the news first. I dont know how and why. But they do.
Its just natural that people switched towards them for the news.
And as for the game list. (forum list)
Yes. Its a mess...
Maybe you should sort it to F2P, P2P, Browser ?
And yes. Perhaps there should be short description of each game. Written by independent party (not game publisher) describing what the game is.

*gasp* ... and you trust 'Those Guys'? lol ... I haven't run into anything that didn't work, I was just curious.
IF you really think mmorpg.com is on the decline, then perhaps one of the things you would want to do is look at the games list and sort by date. I've done it for you right here: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/show/all/sCol/estimatedRelease/sOrder/asc
Let's tick off the most notable games...
2003
2004
2005
2006
2007
2008
2009
2010
