I'm looking for an MMO with with those two traits basically, it can be F2P for P2P, but I will not spend more than $20 on a P2P game. :)

    You don't even have to pay for the game itself. Just add a sub after the trial and you're all set. That's how I had done it.

    Another idea is A Tale In the Desert. Great, welcoming community.

    Might want to try Istaria.  It's an older game but you can play a demo account forever as a human and not have any limits on crafting.  Worth checking out.

    eve online

    ryzom(but has a small community)

    planeshift(open source playable development rather than alpha/beta/live) 100% free so may be worth a look just for that

    linkrealms may be worth trying when it goes ob
