Originally posted by HerculesSAS This patch will in my eyes, be no different. It will introduce a bunch of new stuff, most of it will be broken, it will break existing features as well, and cause more harm than good. But that's why, from the very beginning, I have been a stickler for explaining to people what "beta" means, and a proper software development life cycle, because properly followed -- it ensures you won't make a bad product. They threw it out the window because none of them have experience doing professional development, and as a result, you have the poor game in front of you.
If SV decided to you know -- actually plan the design, which at this point is apparent that they didn't bother in almost any aspect of the game -- they would have found that out. The games that use Unreal as a base for an MMO are either highly instanced -- APB, Global Agenda, etc -- or have a humungous and experienced team working through the issues to get it to work, like with Vanguard -- and even that didn't work out well.
Like I said though, there's a great entertainment factor in watching the progress (or lackthereof) of this game, and I'll stick around and watch the train wreck as it happens.
Just from these snippets of your post it seems you were expecting them to go about this different. They're amateurs, of course they're going to be behind the curve in just about every category. They're really not much different than any other hobbyist out there. You're also forgetting, getting this far was no small feat.
If they were a company doing what the developers of Mourning or Dark and light did, I'd understand finding humor in what has happened with their game, out of irony. This isn't an ironic circumstance at all, this is the reality of making an MMO. It requires long term funding, and long term dedication. They've obviously shown the latter, against many adversary's as well (posters like yourself).
These guys have probably spent a lot of their own personal funds, as well as the time they've put into this. Sitting back and laughing about it shows what? People are amused by others attempting to fulfill a dream and failing? That's a message I'll leave for others to send as i don't agree with it.
It sucks the game isn't what we as a community wanted it to be. It sucks that companies like this can't get proper funding in this day and age. It sucks the game wasn't allowed the time to reach a level that would be successful. You know who all this sucks the most for? SV..............

There is NO MIRACLE patch. The only people hyping up the myth is you and your 100,000 posts in the MO subforum. I am actually starting to feel bad for you that you have so much anger over some beta. So you made up this ridiculous myth of a miracle patch.
Here.. from Henrik Nystrom the CEO. This interview is posted on the Mortal Online forums and on some fansites. This will be it for content. There might be an update patch or two to try and correct some bugs but this is the patch where SV will unveil all the content which they were holding back on. My guess.. and it's only a guess is that next Monday March 1st is the official "launch" of Mortal. HenrikNystrom: mib, like stated in our release list of features, we have covered them pretty much, some are to buggy, some lack some content to be worknig as intented, thats what we are trying to fill in our upcoming patches
HenrikNystrom: when those patches are working as intended we will start preparing for the release.
HenrikNystrom: Matar, oh yes, economy is also on the 22th patch, forgot about that one
HenrikNystrom: we have not spend any time into ballancing economy and prices in MO yet, thats going to be added with some thought in the 22th patch
HenrikNystrom: there are 2 patches, one on 15th and one on 22th
HenrikNystrom: 22th one is major patch yes
HenrikNystrom: with our last content that we prommised for release
HenrikNystrom: with some bonuses
HenrikNystrom: thats the plan, we will have to go through the content after the 22th thou make everything work properly first
Wonder if the game will actually be playable at release as I doubt the lag is going to get fixed from the way its going.
Also, why are you using IRC logs, they aren't official! (sarcastic, not serious)
Originally posted by Lille7 See, not everyone thinks Darkfall failed. Sure, it didn't live up to the extreme hype, but thats mostly the communitys fault, having extremely high expectations. As far as i know Darkfall is having a healthy population and frequent updates to the game. If anything less then 2 millions subs is a failure, yeah, id say every MMO have failed so far with the exeption of WoW. It all depends on what you aim for. If AV s goal was to have 2 servers with a healthy pop, then DF is a success.
Also, heres a list of features planned to be in MOs release: - The full Myrland continent
- At least 9 races, male and female
- Blood mix and character customization
- Main features of the skill system
- Full PvP, full loot
- Full melee and ranged combat
- Basic magic combat
- Mounts and mounted combat
- Basic GUI for the crafting system
- Resource gathering
- Basic Guild mechanics
- Basic player housing
- Basic NPC mobs and wildlife
- Hidden/secret features
Of those, i think only the full myrland continent isnt there yet, and won't be for release (Tindreme).
All of those "basic" mean placeholders right? The real systems will be in soon(TM) Tindreme was suppose to be there at launch, why isn't it?
I will be totally honest here- I dont consider myself a bitter, spiteful or hateful person at all. However, I am enjoying this train wreck after my experiences with the abysmal Beta.
Its odd because I am normally one to just shrug my shoulders and move on- I have no vested interest in this (or any other game at the moment) but for some reason I HATE THIS GAME and am finding myself checking these forums multiple times a day in hopes of reading even more horror stories and epic failure.
A game has never intrigued me so much in this regard. I dont want to play it, but I want to witness the biggest, most epic failure this side of a Steakhouse in India- I dont really know or understand the reason for this- Just being honest.
There's a problem with your intrigue, you shouldn't be surprised. If this was some run-of-the-mill every day AAA studio, I would understand. However, this is a group of gamers trying to make a game. There's a huge difference there, pointing and laughing at them is the wrong approach IMO. This is the little guy we're talking about, akin to the little mom and pop store on the corner that struggles to get by because walmart just moved to town.
Game design isn't easy, MMO design is even more difficult. I'm surprised they've made it as far as they have. That in itself is an accomplishment. If they were able to sustain more funds things might have turned out different, that's the sad part in all of this.
MO may never be a stable enjoyable game. It may not even survive long enough to improve over what it is today. If this game released to the MMO crowd that existed years ago, it would have had a much better chance at survival. In this day and age with the WOW generation, nothing is even given a chance. If EVE released today as it did, it would fail. Indies have little room for any kind of failure in this climate, that's setting the bar far to high for them given their funding and other constraints laid on them. There will never be another EVE in this genre, because a game has no room to grow and expand as it did over the years. Because they had support from the community. That community doesn't exist any longer, that's the truly sad part.
Well said.
On THIS website I don't see many fanboys. I see realistic people who see the struggle of someone trying to do something different. I hate fanboys, I dealt with numerous amounts of them during the Darkfall launch, which truly was a trainwreck. I had a fanboy tell me that Darkfall had no hackers during launch, THAT is a fanboy.
I was silent during the beta phases of Darkfall, it wasn't until launch that I got on various forums to speak the truth about the state of the game and the horrendous business practices by Av. Go ahead and look at my previous posts. And if MO launches in the same manner I will do the same to them, but unlike other companies SV has been honest about MO, they opened their beta phases to the public, they admit errors and admit numerous problems. Rather than bash them i applaud them. I don't know about you guys, but I am tired of gaming companies lying to me. Also I am smart enough NOT to pay to play beta, and NOT to preorder anything. I'm sorry for those of you that feel swindled, but that is your own fault. People need to stop PAYING to play fake "open betas"
Another poster on this thread is right, these developers are the little guys. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
At least someone is doing something different. Even if it is just some enthusiast that wanted to make a game. I am a firm believer that if you do not agree or like something, then do one better yourself!
I love the mmo model of video games. Look at the increasing trends and you will see mmos becoming more like single player RPGs with some half-assed social hub in place of their "mmo" aspect. Sooner or later you guys will be paying a monthly fee to play a single player rpg with a chatroom, and that is a sad fact.
Eve online survived and became an amazing sandbox MMO, Darkfall overcame huge obstacles and is actually playable with new fixes being made as fast as they can. These aren't big gaming companies, so I don't expect much. I do expect not to be lied to, and I expect moral business practices.
If you expected a miracle game then that is your OWN fault. Can it be? Maybe. Does it look likely? No.
Concerning some of the replies to my comment (and not wanting a page and a half of quotes) I will simply state the following...
I am well aware that SV is not a AAA company, but rather a group of gamers trying to make a game. I am also (to a lesser extent) very aware of the problems and pitfalls related to making PC games- In fact, I myself am making a PC game and have started an Indie company. I think the difference here is that these amatures (not a AAA studio as has been stated) took peoples money up front for funding, made a features list that was unrealistic and have the communication skills of a Nigerian "Banker" who you just sent a check to and will now no longer return your phone calls.
Personally, the entire company has shown itself to be very shady- Not to mention this "non AAA" company has a box price (and download price) WAY higher than the AAA companies and yet much lower overhead (which is quite odd)...To me, that is like charging more money for a "kit car" built in a garage than a Porsha built in a factory using the best parts availible, employing people and paying the rent/taxes on an actual factory.
I dont even fully blame SV as I am of the mindset "Let the buyer beware" and people actually sent them money for their "garage built kit car" in advance and now realize they could have bought that porsha for far cheaper...There is lots of blame to go around here. ..The problem is that the list of excuses and the lack of meaningful communication and the everpresent bugs and patcher problems have turned this into a circus....And yes, I have my Popcorn ready.
I know I am an amature concerning game development- That is the reason I have used MY OWN MONEY to begin work on my game which will be freeware... Even though its freeware I am also not making a "to die for" features list but rather a small list of what I know I can do (and a secret "non public list" of what I really plan on doing)...I am also giving a release date that is far longer than I will need so I can (if anything) release early rather than late.
These are simple ideals that anyone should follow on their first game- Once I have something under my belt and have established a team which has proven itself to be capable and hard working- THEN I have something to go on, my name is "out there" and I have (hopefully) provided a proffesional quality game FOR FREE and thus have a bit of integrity.
In short, that is what this about- Integrity. Of which SV has very little and is showing themselves to not even be deserving of that... Simple communication to people who have already paid for a product that is going to turn out very sub par... SV cannot even do that.
No, this is an enjoyable "show" and hopefully serves as a lesson to both developers and to potential consumers. The Industry is out of hand right now with bullshit promises, horrible customer service, etc.... The new iteration of "buy now" and "play when its ready" is a scam. Perhaps this will wake people up- If not, I will still enjoy the train wreck.
To the comment regarding "You should get a life" I lol- I have a pretty good one actually, with a job that allows me lots of free time to spend reading up on the train wreck which is MO. I could counter your "get a life" with another ignorant "Jerrry Springer" one liner "You dont even know me" (please read that quote with full ebonics accent)- =P
I really love "let's play" videos. So when MO starts, if one of those who bought it would make a let's play of the first few hours, I'd be thankful for that. You know, simply recording from gamestart on everything that happens and uploading that on youtube, so people can see what the game really is like, instead of relying on rumors and heavily edited videos. It's not much work since you don't have to edit the video, add music or effects or blends of any sort, just cut in 10 minute pieces and upload.
Ah I see...as long as its bashing SV and the game its cool.
On topic:
Path will be released tomorrow so they can add more stuff to it.
This patch was announced like a couple weeks ago (forgive me if I am mistaken- I'm not going to look) so if you honestly believe that they are releasing it tommorow to "add new stuff" would you like to buy a really nice plot of land I am selling in Ubekastan? Its a really safe area and is a great place to raise kids....Really cheap too.
Ah I see...as long as its bashing SV and the game its cool.
This is on topic and I added it to the OP. Just another problem Starvault has to fix before the game launches is all, not bashing the game, just telling people what is actually going on.

I am posting what sebastian said on IRC.
It doenst matter what I or YOU or whoever beleives.
As long as they patch the game this week I am fine with it.

You know, they have a bug tracker (that actually anyone can visit and check for themselves all thebugs that have been found)
Be honest with yourselve. You are not posting this stuff on here becous eyouw ant to help the game.
You are posting it so you can bash the game and drive customers away. Pretty cheap tactic since even newbs can see that reading couple of threads on here and just ignore your posts.
I would suggest you actually play the game and make a review of it. It will be more helpful. And more honourable thing to do. Of course if honour is something with a meaning to you.
TJ_420 good post, It is alot of blame to go around, I hope people finally realize to STOP PAYING FOR BETAS, and STOP PAYING FOR HOPES & DREAMS.
Now if you feel comfortable looking at it as an investment into a hopefully great game, then more power to you.
These horrid releases just prove to us all that these companies need a better business model, as an investment banker I do alot of consulting and managerial accounting for small to major clients, I know for a fact that even if you are small you need to "act big" meaning you need a WORKING business model that takes into account EVERYTHING from technical aspects such as the gfx engine, server load, expected user load, to the human factor such as marketing, how people perceive what you are making, and your developers skills related to time frame.
I'm working with a group of graduate students this year putting together what we hope will be a successful frame for a business model pertaining to social games. It will be a fun project, and I enjoy using games such as MO, DF, STO, etc etc etc as examples.

I'm confused.. are you trying to say that clientside hit detection and other clientside calculations is a bug that we should watch on the tracker? I was led to believe that this was a design 'feature' and not a bug but if there is some dev quote correcting that and stating it will be fixed PLEASE share it with us as that would be big news!
If not... then the bugtracker really isn't going to fix a poor design decision that can/has and will be exploited.

OK. SO now I guess I am speaking with a profesioanl game dev with inside info on how MO manages the netwroking.
Plus a perosn that has the power to see the future.
Really though, I rather beleive in the decisions made by real game devs that make living by developing games than the rants by some anonymous couch dev.

Thats a really bad way of thinking about things- Plenty of "proffesional game devs" have failed epiclly as amature "game players" predicted.

The patch for today, Monday, Feb. 22nd is delayed for 24 - 48hrs.
As a little compensation I can tell you that you will definately enjoy the changes to the magic system (aim based) and the 4 new spells (3 of them combat) as well as the new pathfinding system for creatures.
Oh and.. watch those Orcs. They are mean.
SV shows again that it cares what players think about the game.

Does one have to be a pilot to know that it would be a bad idea to have the flight controls back in the passenger area?
No.. I think most would agree that flight controls are best kept in the cockpit behind a steel door and that doesn't involve seeing the future either... just common sense.

The thing is that hit detection is not server side not becous ethe devs are some weirdos who prefer to have to monitor the game 24/7 for hackers but becouse its not possible with totdays technology to achieve...
I think its not that hard to undertstand. There is no way they can put hit detection on the server without it making the game unplayble.
so....whats next?
Or it cool to repeat something you heard or read somewhere without really thinking about it? FFS I have seen ppl giving as example GA which has CS type maps with 20-.25 ppl at most....

Firstly I wasnt JUST talking about hit detection... But honestly this is inviting a plethora of hacks and cheats and SHOULD have been worked out in the planning phase...IF the engine is incapable of processsing hit detection serverside (I honestly dont know) then SV made a fatal mistake on the engine they CHOSE to use.
-Really. There will be no way to get a handle on the cheaters.... Kinda like the WOW teleport cheat (remember that one...) since your position was calculated clientside you could input coordenates and warp ANYWHERE and not be detected cheating. There is actually a great presentation on google video regarding Hacking in Online games and THIS WAS ALL COVERED-
I will find a link but essentially a few great programers got together and started Hacking games (not to cheat but to highlight security issues) and this was a BIG ONE- Plus this video (and the subsequent books written about this) is not anything new.

Hacking will be present in every multiplayer game.
There is no 100% hack free mmo out there.
What really counts is how the hackers once caught are treated.
Many companies start issuing warnings and what not in desperate attempt to not loose clients.
SV has promised to ban hackers and their credit cards without any warnings. They already did so in beta. Hercules can talk about his first hand experience there

Yes also it would be great if instead of spendinghours in traffic jams we could insatntly teleport to our work.

Thats a really bad way of thinking about things- Plenty of "proffesional game devs" have failed epiclly as amature "game players" predicted.
Look, I am not a Carpenter but I can see the structure of a new home being built and know (based on common sense) if it is being constructed properly or not. I am not a politician but I can pretty well see where the "proffesional" politco's have brought our Nation. I am not a profesional food critic but I know when I have tasted good food.
Your reasoning fails because giving a "pass" to a "professional" and just "taking their word" is how people are scammed every day in all walks of life.

Cheating will always exist but a system is being made (in this case) that is INVITING CHEATERS

100,000 posts? Who?
Wonder if the game will actually be playable at release as I doubt the lag is going to get fixed from the way its going.
Also, why are you using IRC logs, they aren't official! (sarcastic, not serious)
All of those "basic" mean placeholders right? The real systems will be in soon(TM) Tindreme was suppose to be there at launch, why isn't it?
lol ye i remember that patch, it was a good one ^^ But it still didnt save the game.

On topic:
Path will be released tomorrow so they can add more stuff to it.
[Mod Edit]
That reminds me:
I really love "let's play" videos. So when MO starts, if one of those who bought it would make a let's play of the first few hours, I'd be thankful for that. You know, simply recording from gamestart on everything that happens and uploading that on youtube, so people can see what the game really is like, instead of relying on rumors and heavily edited videos. It's not much work since you don't have to edit the video, add music or effects or blends of any sort, just cut in 10 minute pieces and upload.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
What does this have to do with the topic?
Ah I see...as long as its bashing SV and the game its cool.

Cheers.
Hopefully we all can learn from these disasters.

Aim based magic FTW!

Does one have to be a pilot to know that it would be a bad idea to have the flight controls back in the passenger area?
No.. I think most would agree that flight controls are best kept in the cockpit behind a steel door and that doesn't involve seeing the future either... just common sense.

Yes also it would be great if instead of spendinghours in traffic jams we could insatntly teleport to our work.
Doesnt matter its not possible nor our technology allows us to achieve this.
We have to QQ about it.
