Am I the only one to hate the "Find NPC quest" system in EQ2?

JohnarkJohnark Member Posts: 901

I can't believe this.  One of the first things I actually commented to SOE in my 1 week beta trial before the game was released was exactly this.

Finding NPCs in a city is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

I got no response from them, I did not see any changes, and by the looks of it, nothing will change either.

There's so many quests in the game, 75% of them I end up deleting cause:

1) When you ask a Guard to "Find NPC", they just shrug and don't tell you where the NPC is

2) It's spamming my Journal and I hate having a dozen quests that I cannot finish

3) The game is too new, people are useless.  You can yell a hundred times for help on locating an NPC, no one will respond.  Can't blame them, no one probably managed to find'em either.

4) Quests are bugged.  I mean one quests tell me the NPC is in his house called Bag & Wheels (or something like that), I find the exact building after 10 minutes of searching... the NPC is nowhere to be found, and no guards will tell me his location.  Either SOE forgot to insert that NPC in his house, or it's the wrong damn house!

5) After 24 hours of waiting for an unanswered CSR Ticket, I delete the quest and forget about the ticket.

I mean does SOE really think all we have to do is run around town searching for NPCs?  The time I spent for 1 quest to give me 50 copper could of been invested in leveling my char instead.  And SOE wanted to promote Quests in EQ2... but their quests suck.  The NPCs that give out quests don't give any detail at all.

I'm complaining because how can an old game like Dark Age of Camelot have such fun, accurate, bugless quests and EQ2, created by a rich company like Sony, cannot even try to make good working quests?

I guess they will just never learn.  They thought they had learned their mistakes from Star Wars Galaxies, but they didn't...

Yea, that was my major complaint about the game.

The guards only shrug when the NPC is not near them. Try asking some of the patrolling guards. If you think of it, you wouldt expect someone in your city to know the exact whereabouts of someone 5 miles away would you? I like it, it involves exploration. image

I like it.  Its much more immersive.  I frickkin hate WoWs quests with the guy with the exclamation point over their head and specific directions.  A monkey could play that game.  Why you think they call it "Everquest" duh.

Actually that is the fun of a new game,  you have the chance of being the one who finds the NPC and helping otheres.  Within a few weeks (if not sooner) everything will be mapped out and documented on web sites and then the quests real really become dull.

The whole idea is for people to get to know the zones,  and in my persepctive, it is working.

I see it like this... imagine yourself in medieval age.

You enter a town and you need to find someone. What will i do ?

Well i would prolly ask the first person i met... wheres Mr XXX or Ms YYYYY and probably would get an answer... or not. But even if i got an answer telling me XXXX or YYYYY are in the northen house or house #ZZ, i could go there.. and didnt find them. They might have gone to their daily affairs, maybe even Mr XXXX went to visit Ms YYYY while Mr YYYZZ was out for work :p

There are loads of situatons were you can not find someone in someplace. Maybe they tried to implement it in game..

i have done a crap load of quest and never had a problem locating someone, if they aren't there waiting some time , they will walk in there like they just got up from sleeping or something, real time baby, stop complaining

    1) Talk to the patrolling guards

    2) I dont know what to tell you here buddy, Ive done almost all the quests in queynos I can find (almost 200) and ive never had this problem.

    3) Every question I have asked out of character has been answered.

    4) Npc's sleep and go to eat LIKE REAL PEOPLE DO, so you just check back, but so far I have found no bugged quests.

    5) This is likely due to the fact that they are not allowed to give you any spoilers.  Anytime I have had a technical problem I have received a response within2 hours from ccrs.

It sounds to me that you played this game very little, and want everything handed to you on a silver platter.  The game assumes you are willing to go find these npcs, and gives you their relative location, but like real life, the quest givers do not know where that npc is at that specific frame of time.  If you you want a game that gives you the exact location of an npc and puts a big arrow over them, then this is not the game for you.

Yeah, all of these statements do make sense.

I guess SOE wanted to keep the game real.

Oh well, if they wanted to encourage questing, and it takes me so much time to locate 1 NPC only to get a couple dozen copper coins as a reward, I'll just avoid quests all together and concentrate on grinding.

Which is a real shame.  Cause again, I'm comparing to one of the most complete and perfect MMORPGs I've ever played, Dark Age of Camelot, where you'll do a hard quest and your reward is a nice piece of armor, weapon or magical jewelry that actually helps.

If I'm doing a "hunt NPC" quest only for little money, I can double that amount of money by grinding, plus gain more XP, plus have more fun fighting rather than walking all the time, wasting food & drinks.

Thanks for all your input everyone.

I have had trouble finding NPC's... but for the most part, I learned the area better because of it etc... it really made me feel like i was part of it, the immersion was great...

I think if the quests are too hard for you, you should go play wow for sure...

Thats the thing i really like about everquest2... YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO FIGURE OUT QUESTS OMFG instead of having your hand held the entire time...  yeah it is alot more slow paced... but im a slow paced guy so it works for me... im not dissing wow, but i dont think its right to diss eq2 for actually having a level of dificulty to it, and depth

Uhhhhh ok first of all most of the quests give you clues to who they are like.  Getting armor from SQ usually means look for armorer and what not.  If you really take a lil bit of pause from "power" gaming you figure out all the city zones pretty good and what NPC's the Guards can actually find.

I've done 107 quests and alot of them are find npc, kill npc, spy on npc, find this item but get ambushed and so on.  The only one I found difficult was the Tour of Antonica quest.

YOU can not compare this game to DAoC why? Because Everquest 2 just came out.  Its one of the most complete games ever at launch.

Im not saying your Opinion is worthless, but I am saying perhaps you're doing something wrong in the game if your having a hard time with the easier quests.

To use a guard to find a NPC, you must be in the same zone as the target NPC. If you are, then you get an exact waypoint to the target.

And the game is more fun with quests than grinding, because grinding is boring.

actually exploring is much better and i like that thing in eq 2 bcz its like real life not satues in l2 or CoH.::::07::

The NPCs aren't that tough to find. I tried doing the "tour of Antonica" quest and I have to say I was SO frustrated. I ran around for an hour and a half looking for "Fippy's Hill". I finally gave up and deleted the quest. It would be nice is the world map was a little more help. ::::26::

well... maybe it's the fact I find it too difficult for myself to invest the time to hunting an NPC in a huge city when I could be spending my time grinding.

Bah... too many bad MMORPGs (coughStarWarsGalaxiescough) started to convert me into a grind machine.  I totally forgot the good'ol ways of enjoying a game by exploring and just doing other stuff except grinding.

    /sigh

I guess I gotta keep playing EQ2 and try to re-covert myself back into just good'ol roleplaying... none of that grinding crap!

I didnt like it to start with, but after finding out that what it does is makes you familiarize yourself with the world, AND gets you to interact more with other gamers. Asking directions is not a bad thing u know...

One bad thing that is happening (at least on the server i play on), alot of ppl dont want to help you. Apperently THEY what to be the big uber EQ2 character and dont care about anything else.
Personaly I understand the point to enjoy the quests not the hassel to "power lvl", i see alot of them around just killing mobs like mad.... The funny thing is they have not done alot of quests, and cant find they ways around.

Im having fun. I have setteled down, and will most likly continue with EQ2 for a long time. Finally a MMORPG that understands the rpg part. Its quality all the way!
